Oooh, oooh, got one!
Every year for the past 25 years, I've made my grandmother's cheese ravioli for Christmas dinner. Mom's meatballs that literally melt in your mouth and hot Italian sausage in a rich marinara sauce and lots of Parmesan. A good red. What more could anyone want for Christmas?
Posted by: TheCheshireKhajiit Dec 6 2016, 07:17 AM
Fond memories, lets see. Most of Khajiit's fond Christmas memories comes from pre-2002 years, before his parents got divorced. We would get together on Christmas Eve at grandma's (Da's side as Ma has no more living family members besides Khajiit and his younger sister) house, eat a nice dinner, and exchange gifts with Da's ma, sister, and nephew, and then Khajiit, his Ma and Da, and little sister would go back home. On Christmas Day we'd wake up early and exchange our gifts after a breakfast of sweet rolls! Later Da's folks would come over and stay till after dinner. Good times, lost to the past. *sad smile*

One Christmas tradition I have is to watch Mr Bean celebrating it. Love how he slams the door on the children caroling outside when they´re done

This year´s Christmas tree has been selected. Well, actually I have two candidates, both equally good and both growing next to roads so they have to come down eventually anyway.
The supplies for the tree are already out and ready. Have some glitter and stuff from when I was a kid actually. The very same stuff

We'll be making nacatamals (Nicaraguan tamales) this year properly, instead of trying to fuse them with pasteles (Puerto Rican tamales).
Our tradition from my dad's side is to start prepping the meal on the 22nd or 23rd. We spend the day making pasteles and those who like rum have rum and cokes. Then we have the big meal on Christmas Eve and we open presents at midnight.
Then for mom's side is to have another big meal on Christmas Day. It's pretty much Thanksgiving Part II.
My favorite thing to make is coquito. I think I may have mentioned it before in another thread. It's like egg nog, but with coconut and the alcohol in it is run instead of bourbon or whatever goes in egg nog.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 10 2016, 05:54 AM
@Jacki Dice: could you please tell me the difference between nacatamals vs. pasteles?
One of my co-workers is Guatemalan and her tamales (I don't remember the proper term now) were delicious!
I think I'd take my eggnog with some of that Laphroaig triple wood . . .

Oh sure!
It seems like every Latin American country makes them differently, so both of them are probably a little different than Guatemalan tamales.
Pasteles are made with a masa (which is the mealy-"dough" mixture) made with yautia root (no idea what it's called in English), large plantains, and potatoes mixed together with achiote oil, for color. It's filled with pork, ham cubes, olives, garbanzo beans, and a pimiento. The masa is laid on a banana leaf, then you add the filler and then fold the banana leaf and boil them for 4 to 5 hours.
Nacatamals are made with corn masa, like Mexican tamales, though the ingredients are slightly different. For example, the achiote is made into a paste, rather than an oil. It's filled with pork as well, and also mint, tomatoes, potatoes, and occasionally raisins. I've never had it with raisins and I don't think I will. Then you wrap them in a banana leaf and steam it for a few hours. They're very good with some cheese on top, but that's not exactly traditional
Another difference is that pasteles are a Christmas tradition. They take way too long to make any old time. But Nacatamals are eaten for Sunday's breakfast in Nicaragua.

That sounds really good! Like you, Khajiit would not want to try the one with raisins, as he is not a fan of raisins.

Jacki, thanks so much for explaining the difference! Both forms sound sooooo yummy.
However, like Khajiit and yourself, I'd probably skip the raisins.
Quick question, what is achiote?
Again, thanks! You're making me hungry . . .
Posted by: Jacki Dice Dec 12 2016, 06:39 AM
Oh you're welcome!
Achiote is what Lilitu uses to color her hair
annatto. I'm not sure if they're seeds or kernels, but they can be cooked with oil to give food a reddish coloring, like how spanish rice looks.

MALX is right. This poor thread did stray quite a bit off topic into a gun conversation. I've taken the liberty of moving those posts over to the 'Shooting Guns for Fun' which is a perfect home for them.

Good call, guys. Strange not even I picked up on it
So, C-tree tomorrow! I reckon I´ll take it inside tomorrow too and start decorating it. Love doing that and having some Christmas music on. One year I had Home Alone going on the TV in the background but that didn´t work; I was soon in the sofa instead of decorating
Posted by: Cain Dec 14 2016, 04:00 PM
Nice! How tall of a tree?
Posted by: mirocu Dec 14 2016, 04:02 PM
Apartment height. I´ll cut it to maybe 2,5 meters. I think the total apartment height is 3 meters.

The Christmas tree for 2016 is installed, decorated and all done! By golly, those ornaments have been in countless trees since my childhood
Had to trim it a bit for it to make room but not too much. I've had better trees but it'll do nicely. Plenty of branches for mALX to run around on

WOO HOO !!!!
I strung lights and hung wreaths & stockings yesterday, one of the light strings plays 36 different XMas songs as the lights blink, lol. It does get old, but my son figured out how to keep the lights going and turn the music off when we have tired of it, lol.
We don't have a tree yet. I found a live one I want, but need to find a way to get it home.

Back in the day when I had a job, last day before Christmas was always special. We always had an extended lunch catered by a local restaurant and it had all the traditional Christmas food one could expect, plus coffee and a afterwards. Really did like that. Plus, we always spent the whole day (or rather it was a half-day) cleaning the workshop; no production at all. My absolute favourite day of the whole year

What with us always having owned some land I have never gone out and
bought a Christmas tree, nor have we ever bought a single piece of firewood. Though if you count on it, it probably would have been a lot cheaper to do overall than having to buy and maintain loads of equipment that you need in order to fell trees and such...
I'll bet!

Cool.
We went and bought a tree today. The selection was crap and the one we ended up with was the nicest out of a selection of bad options, but it looks nice enough decorated.

I sort of have a new Christmas tradition.
Whilst sitting in front of the computer on Christmas Eve, scoffing down on coffee, candy and various cookies, I watch Nostalgia Critic's reviews of the Jurassic Park movies. Dunno why; they're not especially Christmassy or festive but there you go

Christmas food is (mostly) done- Cherry Jell-O Salad, butter cake, and (ordered from out) ham and turkey. Potato dish will be done tomorrow.
Visited with my sister in the house where we grew up- or where I probably refused to grow up....
Concluded the traditional Christmas Eve reading of 2 stories from Christmases when I was small- (yes, we actually had books then- not just stone tablets). The Christmas Forest by Louise Fatio and The Cowboy's Christmas Eve by Jack Shaeffer.
Best wishes to everyone!

WOOOOOT !!! What an awesome present! I've been using the headset for that for three years now; and boy does it make dungeon crawling with friends SO much easier when they can explain the next room/boss fight before you have walked in and aggroed the whole room the wrong way for survival, (etc), lol.

I didn't get any gifts for Christmas. Before all of you start going "Awww", let me tell you that I've been telling everyone no gifts for the past ten - fifteen years or so. Not to be unappreciative, but I got tired of getting stuff that just added to clutter. I'm still struggling for the minimalist vibe in my home, where everything has its place and cats can lounge on the furniture without knocking stuff off. I hate dusting . . .
But I did have a nice, quiet Christmas with my mom, homemade ravioli and MARINARA sauce and meatballs, and a bottle of Italian dry red. And almost everything went well . . .

So yeah- in all the excitement about finally joining the ranks of ESO players, I rather forgot to mention the reason I have been able to do so... the new gaming PC I received as my Christmas gift.
(Those who are easily nauseated by watching someone geek out are advised to stop reading now).
It is a Cyberpower GXVR8020A4 with
i5 7400 processor (3 GHz)
8 GB DDR4 RAM
Radeon RX580 4GB
1 TB hard drive
Windows 10 64-bit
The only negative surprise was no internal CD/DVD-ROM drive... which will teach me to read the specs before ordering. However, a few additional bucks got me an LG external drive, so that's sorted.
The next purchase will be an HDMI/USB KVM switch, which will allow me to run the old Windows 7 PC through the same keyboard, monitor, and mouse. I could just pull the hard drive and run it in an external drive enclosure, but using the switch means I won't have to negotiate for the programs that are loaded on the Win 7 drive to work in the Win 10 PC.

QUOTE(treydog @ Dec 29 2017, 09:22 PM)
WOW, what an AWESOME Xmas Present !!!!
Ooh, I'd like a switch like that to be able to use the same monitor for my old PC without having to unhook all those wires each time! I wonder how well that would work with my old PC? OH! And if it would work with and XP PC, I might be able to play Chips Challenge with just a flip of the switch ...
*mALX wipes drool from keyboard...*

Just finished wrapping up two gifts - one to Dad and one to Gammy. Dad gets a flashlight, a big LED one with a handle and a special battery. It's non-rechargeable but they have more batteries where I bought it and it's supposed to last long. Gammy gets a mini Christmas tree with lights to have on the table.
None of these were too expensive but still not crap. I hope

Ordered my Brother a new TV for Xmas, his old one having gone belly-up following a recent electrical outage. It was an ancient 23-25" tube set. I couldn't afford to get him a super nice TV, but the one I settled on should be leagues better than what he had. It's 1080p 40" with few bells and whistles. Truth to tell, he could have made do with 720p as its only used for conventional cable TV and he can't afford shelling out extra for hi-res signals. But it seems to me 1080p is about as low as you want to go these days regardless of circumstances. I could have bought it through Wally World and had it sent to our local store, but am not sure it could be carted home in either of our cars so ordered it from the Evil Empire (Amazon). It is scheduled to arrive (his house) the 28th. As modern TVs go its quite cheap, but still far more than I've ever spent on an Xmas present.
As usual, my one special holiday observance is Xmas Day lunch with my brother at one of our two local oriental-centric all-you-can-eat buffets.

Yesterday morning my bro and I got together at his house to exchange gifts. Afterward we drove to and ate at one of two local oriental-centric all-you-can-eat buffets. As usual I overate outrageously. Started out with a plate of salad. As expected it was far yummier than the salads I make for myself at home despite most ingredients being the same. Next up, a plate of "oriental" cuisine. It was okay, nothing special. I continue to prefer the flavor at our other such establishment. Next up, a smaller plate of traditional American food; ham, fried potatoes, a small amount of dressing and Lima beans. Very good, except the dressing which was decidedly subpar. No dessert. Water to drink. I paid for both my and my brother's meals including tip.
That is the extent of my Holiday festivities for the year except to help my bro unpackage and set up his new TV when it arrives this Friday.

Some people (namely me) don't really care about this time of the year. I haven't really celebrated Christmas since my sister moved away and my mother passed away and about half my family are either living in other states or no longer of this Earth.
I will say however my dad and I did enjoy our christmas dinner of Mcdonalds cheeseburgers and fries. Say what you want about that place but when you only have a few dollars that dollar menu is a blessing.

Bloody 'ell! Though the day is young, I've already had an unexpected 'adventure.' Not a pleasant one, but in the end things aren't as bad as they might be...so far. No time to go into detail, as I've another, planned adventure to prepare for. When it rains it pours, as they say. Might post details later on, once the active day is behind me.

Iâve always felt that the fuller tree is a symbol of the past yearâs prosperity and the hope of a prosperous new year. I guess itâs just a case of different cultures having greatly differing aesthetic preferences. Quite interesting really.

I see that being as much fun as Paint Ball if you have a good place to play it and friends with similar weapons, lol. (and A LOT cleaner than Paint Ball for your laundry, lol).
Posted by: Dark Reaper Dec 14 2019, 01:00 AM
Nerf Rival are suppose to be the top tier in nerf guns as their rounds travel further and are more accurate then the dart blasters. As for these Overwatch guns they're only McCree's Revolver which shoot one round, D'va shoot three, Reapers which hold 8 for both blasters and Soldier 76's blaster hold 30 and is the only blaster in the Overwatch Ner Series that's fully automatic. The others are pump style.

I hope everyone has their Christmas trees in order!
Posted by: mALX Dec 14 2019, 06:15 PM
Our tree is up; but every time we put decorations on it; the cats take them down; break them; and spread the pieces all over the living room. Our tinsel garland is completely demolished; I found one of the brass bells with red bows in the cat's bed. All the little ornament sized wooden soldiers are now headless. Every ball ornament was smashed and had to be vacuumed up. The soft cloth ones have become "mice" that they "kill" and place on our beds (accompanied by loud yowling to let everyone know which cat the "gift" was from). I am pretty sure the younger one has chewed through the wires for the Christmas lights; thank goodness they weren't plugged in at the time.
And no amount of squirting them with squirt bottles of water or lemon juice or clapping hands and saying "NO!" seems to stop them;
So our Christmas tree this year is looking almost completely naked; unless you count the mess of broken ornaments in a big circle on the floor around it;

My son's bigger cat is really too heavy to climb it now too; but he chases the little one up into it going at super sonic speeds and then tries to paw at the little one through the branches. The little kitten knows the big one can't get to it and drops Ornament bombs down on the bigger cat. All in all, those two cats have made my house a disaster zone, lol.

Well, they wound up fused. My dad apparently can't help himself. đ¤Śđ˝ââď¸ He prefers pasteles.
But this year! We are doing plain and simple nacatamales. Like, for sure for sure.
We have our tree and honestly, I've never had any trouble with the cats. The worst they do is try to drink the water, but we cover it so they can't get to it.

Lol on the cat; that is hilarious!
Oh - on drinking the Christmas Tree water = use "Sprite" or "7 Up" regular soda (not diet) instead of water to feed the tree. It makes the needles really green; and is citrus flavored so pets avoid it.

Nice tree, âRocu olâ boy!
Khajiit went to Ye Olde Christmas Tree Farm Saturday and got a tree. We picked out a nice 4-6ft tree (sorry, Iâm not doing the conversions) with a good little shape to it, cut it down, and had the farm folks haul it up to the buildings to be netted and prepared for travel back to our house. Well, when we got the tree off the roof of hour vehicle, turns out they gave us a 9-10ft tree instead of the smaller one we picked out. We now have to trim it down just for it to be able to fit in the house!

I normally gift my Brother with a Barnes & Noble card. Can't do that this year as we no longer have a B&N (tornado). I reluctantly decided to once again feed the giant and buy him two books on Pro Wrestling history off Amazon. It should arrive in plenty of time for the Holiday. (Also ordered, for myself, a 2021 British Steam Train wall calendar and a two-unit set of CPAP mask wipes.) I'll likely bail on our traditional Xmas-day restaurant meal together, as I did this T-day. Hopefully, this time next year it'll be safer to dine out, though I'm not banking on it, the US being what it is.

It dawned on me out of the blue this morning that I needed to compose and snail-mail holiday letters to the three individuals I've sent them to for decades. I surprised myself by having the project completed and in the mailbox prior to lunch. I also need to send a card to my bro. I'll pick one up at Wally World Monday, if I remember. That'll be it for me this holiday, unless my bro and I rightly or wrongly decide to meet and exchange presents.

I can't get anything big. No room, plus the cat will scale it like Everest.

Well, can't find the telescope; I am wondering if I left it with my husband's stuff when I moved four years ago,
Plus: the college is not allowing the gathering on their observatory roof due to the Covid,
I have two choices; and both require me getting a ride: Go up to the mountains or go to the top floor of a local hotel that has a glass roof. (get a ride because once again my car is broken down after spending nearly a thousand on repairing it, urgh).
So I'll probably be looking for your pics, Reaps.
