Starbucks Hot Ham and Cheese Panini
Yuuuum!
Out of interest, is the coffee in Starbucks any good? Only over here in the UK they're in the habit of burning the beans when they roast them, which results in a cup of what basically tastes like boiling, liquidy poop.
Posted by: mirocu Oct 15 2013, 02:29 PM
I don´t get it why people drink coffee at all. I mean I do too but only because it´s the most common grown-up drink available that still lets you drive afterwards. I mean it simply doesn´t taste good! At least not without milk or cream or something else in it. Why is it so popular!??
I´ll stop now
Till next time
Posted by: King Coin Oct 15 2013, 02:31 PM
Coffee. Trying to decide if I should eat something. Probably not.
Mustard: They only do that in the UK.

Because other people think it tastes good. Hell, I like genuinely the stuff black
(like my men) and don't like it at all with milk, cream or sugar. Unless it's the instant stuff from South Korea which has milk and sugar in it and holy crap it tastes good what the hell?
Don't mistake your subjective tastes for objective fact. Only mine are objective facts.

Of course I get it that other people like the stuff, it helps them stay awake and they like the taste. I just think it tastes foul and it never did anything to help me stay awake. I don´t know, maybe I´m just immune to it
I will say though, it does taste good along with a chocolate bar

Just made avgolemono soup for dinner. Yum!
It's not difficult to make, and so healthy delicious!
Serves 2
Heat 2 TBS olive oil in a soup pot over medium high heat.
Cut up 8 ounces of boneless chicken breast into bite sized pieces. Season with salt and fresh-ground black pepper. Toss into the oil and cook for 5 minutes. Set aside on dish.
Add half an onion, diced, one celery stalk, diced, and handful of baby carrots, diced with 2TBS of chopped fresh thyme (can use 1/2 TBS of dry) and cook for five minutes, or until onions are tender.
Add 2 1/2 cups of low-sodium chicken broth to pot, bring to boil. Add 1/2 cup orzo. Simmer for 8 minutes, or until orzo is tender. Reduce heat to keep soup hot but not boiling.
Heat another 1/2 cup of low-sodium chicken broth in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling. Beat one egg. Gently whisk 1 1/2 TBS of fresh squeezed lemon juice into egg. Gently whisk warm chicken broth into lemon-egg mixture. Note: This tempers the egg so it doesn't solidify on you.
Add lemon-egg-broth mixture to soup, gently stirring or whisking all the while to keep everything well mixed. The egg mixture will thicken the soup and make it amazingly creamy without getting all heavy. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
You can serve it with a side of green salad, or with crusty bread (my favorite is Gonnella's - the long French-style bread that Al Capone loved so much), or by itself, as my mother and I usually do.

We’ve been flooded with cookie gifts since I’m not baking this year, and Mr. Grits just brought home a bunch of treats from the local frozen custard stand. (It was 70 degrees today, but they stay open all winter even when it gets chilly.) Sugar shock. Good thing we have more cookies.

And more tea. Constant Comment, a spiced tea that I’m sure is familiar to all residents and former residents of the mid-Atlantic states. When I was growing up everyone’s house had a hint of Constant Comment in the air. Anyway, it's keeping me out of the cookies.

In preparation for the laterness...
For Xmas dinner we shall be having chicken wrapped in bacon with side-order of apple sausages, roast potatoes, carrots and gravy...Oh, and some stuffing-ball stuff...Possibly the wife will have Yorkshire Puds too...She wanted parsnips too, but she forgot to get them from the Mother-in-law's...(BWAHAHHAAA!)...
We don't go overboard...We used to, but we always cooked too much...So age and experience have whittled it down to the stuff we like most...
Oh, pudding will be chocolate cake and cream...Mmmmm...I likes that...
All of this will be washed down with a decent cup of tea for me, cider for the wife and some sort of coke/lemonade or squash for the kids...
Tea will likely be cheese and ham filled pitta-breads...Before I settle down with my SOUTHERN COMFORT!!!!!...*Cough*...And Doctor Who on the tele...*Sighs contentedly*...
Bet you're all well-jell aren't you?... ...
Posted by: Grits Dec 25 2013, 03:47 PM
I am utterly jelled!! My kids are doing the cooking this year, so we’re having spaghetti dinner. We all like spaghetti so that’s not quite as dire as it sounds, but I expect there will be roast beast on the menu as soon as I’m off the injured list.
Mr. Grits was in charge of the lunch, so we will be having cheese. Luckily I have some dried fruit, crackers, and nuts to add to the plate. Otherwise it would be breakfast: cinnamon rolls. Lunch: cheese.
But I peeked last night, and he got a bunch of very good cheese.

This year's Christmas bakery selections from me:
Bread: Cranberry Walnut celebration loaf. It's an enriched sweetened bread filled with a generous portion of cranberries and walnuts, shaped in the traditional double-decker 3-braid loaf (which you see quite a lot if you are Jewish and you serve Challah for Hannukah).
Dessert is homemade apple pie, my own secret formula, which I am told is quite tasty.
The roast this year will be ham, as well as my signature mashed potatoes, butternut squash puree in place of yams, and our guests will be bringing a salad and green beans.

Stir-fried Napa cabbage with ginger over brown rice.
and onions. I forgot to say onions.
Posted by: ghastley Mar 25 2014, 08:05 PM
Doesn't stir-fried imply onions? It might even imply the ginger too.
It's like Cajun recipes start with a roux, onions, bell peppers and celery and then decide what they're making. You don't even look in the fridge to see what other ingredients you have until you get that far.
Posted by: Grits Mar 25 2014, 09:13 PM
Good point. Or the ‘Holy Trinity’ of carrots, onions, and celery. You could be making a roast or soup and you still start with those three in a pan.

Had some sirloin steak already thawing.
So one guess what we had for dinner?

Just a plain bagel.

We make our strawberries with balsamic vinegar and black pepper. The only way to have 'em, IMHO. Served over angel food cake - the ultimate dessert - spring, summer and fall!
Posted by: Grits May 8 2014, 05:39 PM
Yum! With balsamic vinegar and black pepper (but no cake) is a strawberry staple in the Grits household. Also over still-warm cornbread with milk for breakfast.
Yesterday The Girl dipped some in chocolate. I had some in my spinach salad for today’s lunch. We take full advantage of the season!

When I was still living in England I grew strawberries in my back yard. They were all propagated from runners of one parent plant, so they all fruited at the same time. My strawberry season was about a week long, usually when I went away for a vacation.

It's Fourth of July...
So today I had chips with chili dip, these pickle rolls which is a pickle and cream cheese rolled in hard salami (omg I love these so much) a guacamole burger, a hot dog, a rib, watermelon, too many sodas to list and a can of beer.
So far.
Night's not over. I predict pie, more beer, more soda, and more pickle rolls. I don't know how I will stuff all this in, but I will find a way.
I will pay dearly on Monday when its time to work this all off, but as of now, I declare its worth it!
EDIT: ....I can't finish my burger. There may not be more pie or pickle rolls after all. (sob) This is me every holiday, really. I never learn....

I figured that it described its effect more than anything else resembling a certain hardy mammal.

Heh, Lucy does give a pretty good facial impression that matches that of most Americans when they first try vegemite.
The secret is to start with tiny amounts and think of it as a spice, not a spread.

I wonder how they'd taste with the Moose Drool?
