I severe thunderstorm just swept through my area rough six hours ago, and I became interested in seeing what you people think of thunderstorms. I used to be afraid of them when I was litte, but now I enjoy watching them!
EDIT: .... I pressed the enter button and the fourth option of "I'm terrified of them" didn't get in >< curse the enter button!
Edit: Added the fourth option.

I lived in an area of constant storms. At first they were fun to watch, but I found they got boring after a while...so now im a "dont feel anything for them" person.
I LOVE thunderstorms! Florida is the lightning capitol of North America so of course we get scads of thunderstorms. In a good rainy season (June-November=hurricane season ... June-August=rainy season) we get daily afternoon thunderstorms of terrific caliber. They come on ferociously out of intensely sunny blue skies and an hour after they've stopped the only evidence in the muggy returned sunny weather are the little puddles everywhere on the ground.
I still remember the night of Bob Hope's funeral ... the thunder was so magnificent that night it honestly sounded like the heavenly hosts were playing the great man a celestial drum solo soundoff goodbye ... or welcome you might say.
I do now though have steel-toed sneakers (black Reeboks, they're awesome) so I worry abit about what if I get struck by lightning, what'll happen? They still do have rubber soles of course. If anyone knows the physics of this please let me know because I'd like to walk freely around lightning without worrying.
Gah, thunderstorms! Ok they are beautiful as a phenomenon, to watch from far away......but I still suffer from the thunderstorm that hit my homearea at the 30th of may! two comps and a broadband router down the drain! So they are really a nuiscance
They're dangerous. And fun to watch. A poor man's Fireworks Show, I suppose...
Before moving to Oklahoma six years ago, I would have said they are fun to watch. The ones around here tend to damage stuff on their way through!
I love watching t-storms, specially going out ot the dock and watching thm roll in. had a pretty impressive one a few days ago in wilmington. unfortunetly while fascinating and active it struck two of the brand new buildings on campus and shorted them out.
I like watching them, but they're a pain when they come in when I'm on the computer, not to mention thunderstorms in Oklahoma is usually paired with a tornado somewhere.
So mritchey & Zarrexaij both live in Oklahoma ... are you two related? Interesting that you are both from what seems to be a lesser populated state.
Three words when it comes to lightning storms and electrical equipment ... battery powered backup. Your surge suppressor for your computer and router and stuff should have that so the batteries can give an extra 30 seconds or so of power and your computer can get a soft-off that way instead of getting fried. I think that's how it works anyways. Cain's battling 4 headed Hydra in Shadowbane so I can't ask and be sure. teehee
I live in the south-eastern corner of Pennsylvania... its like a little pocket of safety. We never get floods, tornadoes or anything of that sort! The worst thing we ever get is snow, but lately that hasn't happened!
I like to watch thunderstorms that aren't too severe from my garage, sometimes my dog and dad join me!
Uhg!
Rainer never gets any sleep when they come at night Terrified...
I'm only scared sometimes when I have to be outside in the thunderstorms but some people in Florida are crazy. Like I was swimming in the pool and I could here what I thought was thunder rumbling from far away and one side of the sky was approaching dark clouds. So I said it sounded like thunder and the other people in the pool just said "No its those airplanes flying overhead." So we stayed in the pool. So then there was lightning at a distance at which time I flew up out of the pool ... but those other crazy people stayed in the water until the rain was just pelting down on the water like crazy. I mean, they were already wet .. guess it would have made sense if it wasn't for the lightning!
And everyone in Florida walks around in the rain like it isn't happening. No umbrella, no walking faster, no hunching down ... just strolling along business as usual. Its a warm rain usually and does feel pretty good after the killer hot humidity and sun so much.
"And everyone in Florida walks around in the rain like it isn't happening. No umbrella, no walking faster, no hunching down ... just strolling along business as usual. Its a warm rain usually and does feel pretty good after the killer hot humidity and sun so much."
Yeah after living in Central and S. America rain does not bother me in the slightest. I never understand why most americans start running when it starts drizzling. I just walk through it as if it's not there, even when it's rather heavy. It's just water after all. Besides I think i have only seen it actually "rain" once or twice in NC, most of what is considered 'rain' is nothing quite like what i am used to in Panama or Venezuela.
GAH! We´ve been having some the last two days again!.....I unplugged everything remotely like computers, telephone-lines and tv-antennas! Been uncommunicable since friday morning!
Like smoke and fire, where there's thunder there is lightning. May not be close to you and you may not see it but thunder is the sound that lightning makes when it breaks through the air. So be warned and aware.
Florida sucks! It's too humid there. Well, anyway, I voted they're a nuisence because my cat wants to go outside, and won't be quiet until he hears the thunder. Plus, on Oblivion, I can't see too far ahead.
Hey Abu, what's up with all the caustic comments lately from you & 1234king & 14hunter too? Did you guys come here specifically to shut threads down by spamming at other people?
I am a Floridian and Florida DOES NOT suck, although we are rather abrasive to little boys with no manners!

(and let's pretend that I put a TESF CHAOS smiley HERE, just for the sake of arguement )
Oh I'm sorry! Funny Mil. Just touchy cause I had a nice wizard tower going in Morrowind and then I got too ambitious and I think I either made the whole thing too tall or made one of the large statics too big!! And the darn mod crashed my game so bad that I had to reinstall all 3 games, MW-Trib-BM .. and patches ... and now I have to redo the cool stuff I made over again. Got the meshes and textures anyways.
And Milanius, I made a cool dark, almost black red tapestry of your anger face (remember that pic?) so I'm just gonna take a screenshot of it in TESCS and see if you'll let me use it in my cliffracer shooting tower mods. There are 3 now - had to break it up it's so large. lolol
And this has to do with thunderstorms??....how??? .... Obliously that when it rains it pours. Also, don't sit in during rainy season and build your mods too big or too high.
As long as nothing bad happens, I love these! It always gives me such a cozy feeling when the thunder rolls in. Though the effect was better on me when I was a kid, these days it´s more like "oh, can´t sit and play my games anymore"
I despise the things. (We've a full day of potential severe thunderstorms this Wednesday, with another couple of stormy days not yet flagged as severe.) I tend to be petrified of them since I don't have a storm cellar or even a 'safe' room or closet in the house. Nor does my little town have any sort of community storm center.
My family's history with them include:
A cousin who lost his life when a tornado-blown door smashed into his head, or vice versa. (This occurred either just before I was born or when I was too young have any direct memory of it.
Another relative had a tornado take out a small corner of their house. (Again, a long time ago.)
My parents' home was totally destroyed during a 1973 tornado. They and my brother survived by being crouched between a bed and wall in the the one room of the house that remained partially intact. (Its ceiling collapsed several hours later.) That same tornado destroyed my father's place of employment and the high school I attended several years prior.
The roof and two walls of exterior siding of my current home, and my then-car, were totaled during a hail storm circa 1998.
Overlong exposure to the elements while policing the yard following a wind storm late Jun 2014 led to a worsening of an already existent chronic lung condition. I've had frequent 'flareups' ever since, and now need daily medicated inhaler treatments plus monthly antibiotic treatments. (Before, flareups occurred piecemeal, separated by wide intervals.)
I had a pair of cats (brother and sister) who had opposite reactions to storms. The male would sit in the window and watch the light show, and the female would hide at the back of a dark cupboard.
I've had the chimney knocked off my house by lightning, and lost trees at the front to a small tornado that didn't damage any of the nearby houses, although it did drop a large tree in between two of them. I don't live near any trailer parks, so tornadoes are rare.
Not needed, but it is well known that trailer parks attract them.
Bloody 'ell. This morning our forecast was for overcast skies with a chance for stray thunderstorms. Couple of minutes prior to supper electricity cut out momentarily. Cut out again, and again momentarily, not long after supper. After the second outage I launched my online weather site of choice to discover we're under a flash floor emergency, with record shattering rainfall already fallen, and more enroute. Looked out the living room window. Eep! Scary. (My ears no longer lets me hear rain hitting the roof.) Turned on the TV. Local news shows lots of flooding. We shall see how it goes, I reckon.
Yikes! I hope you stay safe and dry, Decrepit.
Blimey. You really seem to live in a hotspot, Decrepit. I hope you can stay safe and dry
Well, here's hoping that Decrepit is still with us this morning and did not float away in the storms!
Remember that levitation is only illegal in Cyrodiil. If the water gets high, get out of there!
At it turns out, the worst of the heavy rains were over, or nearly so, when I posted yesterday's comment. No damage to myself or my property, praise the Nine. Yeah, this is something of a severe-weather prone region. Summers used to be comparatively safe, with fewer weather threats. But nowadays summers are super hot, making each lawn mow a risk for an old fart like me. But what ya gonna do? That lawn's gotta get mowed.
The stronger the thunderstorm the more I likes it .
Had our first major T-storm scare of the year (2017) between yesterday early evening and this morning at roughly my breakfast time. Potential of strong winds, hail and (to a lesser extent) tornadoes. Luckily my immediate area seems to have avoided all that though places not far away suffered wind damage and electrical outages. Very scary tornado cell to the south last night that thankfully weakened to a non threat before it reached us. Now not much past 9am we are under clear blue skies, with all the nastiness having moved to the east across the Mississippi River into TN (and elsewhere).
Damn thunder woke me up 10 minutes before my alarm is set to go off in the morning. Ugh.
I love thunder storms, I can practically sleep through them.
I usually do as well, but man.... That boomer shook the house.
Woke to no electricity just before 0400 this morning, 25 Mar 17. A landline call to Entergy revealed that power went out at 0107, and was expected to be restored by 0730. There was nothing for it but to stay in bed and read by the light of two very weak candles. Come 0745, still without electricity, I called again. Now we were expected to be without until around noon due "extensive damage" to Entergy equipment. Back to bed for more eyesight-worsening reading. At about 0815 I discovered my bed alarm-clock time display flashing. Got up, reset the three clocks that needed it, turned on the computer. Here I am.
Not sure what happened. Last time I checked weather last night we were under thread of strong winds but nothing worse. No damage to the homes/yards around me that I can see.
Oddly, as I was typing this Entergy called to let me know that damage is worse than expected, and that restoration time is now unknown.
We get small outages from time to time without any severe weather at all. Part of living in the countryside where everything is neglected
Hopefully you'll get stable electricity soon enough so that The Tireless Crusader can resume his patrols without interruption
What a day! After posting my previous contribution I decided to play a little Wiz7. Finished that and found I couldn't reach any web sites. The router verified DSL was dead. So was the entire phone line. No internet for me until about circa 1500.
News is saying we're about to get some storms...YAY!!!
Ja, it rained pretty much all day for us yesterday. Some thunder and lightning but nothing too serious.
Whew...
We had a chance for some nasty weather from yesterday late evening on through mid morning today. Nothing came of it locally. Very bad stuff down Texas way yesterday, and to our west (Oklahoma). Thankfully the worst of it petered out before reaching us. The storm front's western edge is now just to our east, heading eastward, with the potentially severe stuff all east of the Mississippi.
Another potentially scary storm night. So far it hasn't gone badly, certainly less scary than was predicted. We were under a Severe Storm Warning until a bit ago. It's now been downgraded to a Watch, the worst of the storms having moved to our east. Still under a Flash Floor Warning for another 30min or so. A town 10 miles to our west has indeed suffered flooding. The area around my house looks no worse (so far) that what one would expect during heavy rains.
Tomorrow is expected to be a decent day. Bad weather moves in again Friday, and last through the weekend. As of now at least one of those three days has the potential for severe storms.
Bloody Spring!
Bah! Now Friday - Sunday are all three flagged for potential severe storms.
Bloody Spring! I'll take the heat of summer any day, except when I have to mow that lawn. Forget that! (As if I could.) Far fewer severe storm threats during summer.
Flash Flood Watch from now through Sunday, 30 Apr 2017. No other forms of severe weather are listed...yet. My weather site of choice shows a potential for severe storms all three days, but gives no further details. Too bad I can't ask my avatar to travel to my side of the screen and cast his Sheogorath weather changing spell at times like these. We could make a financial killing of that, up until non existent climate change screws things beyond the point of no return.
Stay safe, Decrepit!
What a night, and it ain't over yet!
Fairly early yesterday evening, was at the computer (where else?) when electricity cut out maybe 10-20sec. Weather didn't seem bad at all, so I didn't think much of it. Restarted PC, hoping to continue work on my ill conceived Hamfat Hamkin pre-Crisis history project. Wouldn't boot into Windows. Rebooted and entered BIOS. Custom setting, of which I have a lot, wee reset to DEFAULT. Started reconfiguring settings. BLAM...electricity cut out...and stayed out. Reported outage to Entergy. A nice robot lady to me service would be restored circa 2230. Grabbed my emergency reading light and retired to bed. Soon received an update call...estimated repair now expected by midnight. Returned to bed. Did a bit of reading. Fell asleep, with weather still not appearing to be all that bad. Woke circa 0032 to no electricity. heavy rain, lots of thunder. City warning sirens soon came on and stayed on a LONG time. Not knowing exactly what was going on I dressed and returned to bed, hoping for the best. Sirens finally shut off and stayed off maybe ten minutes before kicking in again. Stayed on a long time. Electric finally restored a bit after 0200. Immediately turned on local TV station, which as expect was running constant weather coverage. By then my immediate area what not under immediate threat, but had been not long before, with strong rotation passing just north of the city. Torrential rains had fallen. More were/are expected before all is said and done. Another wave of severe storms is moving up from the south, bringing more tornado threats, torrential rains, chance of flooding, heaving lighting, hail, hard-line winds and so on. We're in a trough of calm at the moment, but it won't last long, unless the worst of the coming storm wave passes to our east as it travels north.
Turned on the computer. Reconfigured BIOS. Rebooted. Wouldn't boot into Windows. For whatever reason the BIOS had not remembered my Boot Device changes. Reconfigured. Rebooted. Wouldn't boot into Windows. BIOS had again not accepted Boot Device changes. Rinse and repeat a good 25min. At least, following another BIOS modification, Windows launched. Not sure why it worked that attempt but not before. Hope it's be okay from this point on. <crosses fingers>
TV station has resumed regular programming for now. A potential good sign?
Dearie me. Sounds like you have not had as calm an evening/night as I've had, Decrepit. I hope it won't get worse.
On your computer issue, while it's working as normal I strongly urge you to make as many backups as you can, of as many things that are important to you as you can. Worst case scenario you can just paste the info on to a new computer.
Weather coverage kicked back in. Bit of nastiness not far to our south, with strong rotation that looks like it might morph into a true tornado. On the plus side, if it stays on curse it'll pass a bit to our east as is moves north. Our worst thread is expected to be rains and flooding. We're under a warning now, and will remain so until around noon. There's been water evacuation along one river in our coverage area, but nothing local so far as I know.
Yeah we are under tornado warnings in our area. Was really hoping the really hot weather we've been having lately was a signal that we were done with severe weather for now.
Had a good one last night, my Dad has problems sleeping through them but I can sleep like a log through one.
We're still under flood warning and flash flood watch (or is it the reverse?), with over an inch of new rain expected today and half an inch tomorrow. That said, the worst threat is to those along certain rivers and/or low lying areas. I doubt I'll be in any serious danger, though with my house as close to the ground as it is that can't be taken for granted.
Oh oh...
We are now under a severe storm WARNING for the next 45min, with my town listed in the path. There was no hint of severe weather when I checked just prior to supper. Screwy days for sure, weather wise.
(The threat is expected to be damaging wind and hail. Tornadoes are not mentioned...yet.)
ADDENDUM: Our warning has expired....for now. More severe threats expected later tonight (and/or early tomorrow).
Yipes!
Decent size hail hitting the house (and my car). Thankfully it doesn't seem to be a pounding hail, which with luck will prevent damage to my property. (Of course with my hearing like it is hail might be hitting harder than I think.) Local TV hasn't interrupted normal programming to cover the threat, a good sign? On the other hand, my online weather site of choice shows the potential scariest part of this cell immediately west of my town heading east.
Good thing you got your lawn mowed! Seriously, I hope it passes without damage to chez Decrepit or your chariot.
Rough night. Severe weather rolled through beginning around 10pm and lasted hours. Heck we can still expect storms until mid morning, though at the moment now are predicted to be severe. Won't know if any damage was done until it gets light enough to venture outside for a look-see, assuming its safe to do so then.
I am vindicated, though I fervently wish I was not. At lunchtime about a week ago, on a day following a stormy night, I noticed water standing atop a portion of one of my kitchen counters near its back where it abuts a wall. (Not an outside wall. The one separating kitchen from computer room.) I looked and looked but for the life of me could find no evidence of where the water came from. I finally gave up and asked my next door neighbor, who does home repair, to take a look. He couldn't find a source either. He said I had to have spilled something and not noticed. I reluctantly accepted that verdict, though I could think of absolutely nothing I had done that might have led to a spill of that sort. In the back of my mind I could not quite believe it. Yet how could the water have gotten where it was without me causing it?
I checked that counter top at least once a day. Nothing new... until the heavy rains we had before the batch last night. At lunchtime that day I again noticed some water in that same area. Again no source could be found, but in this I "had" done a bit of very minor cleaning atop the counter earlier that day. I was very careful during that cleaning, but could not be 100% sure I had not somehow missed a bit of water spillage. This was bothering me more and more.
During last night's rains, as I was about to retire to bed, I thought to check counter. This time heavy rain was still falling, rather than me checking after the fact. Plus, I had checked the counter after supper and knew it "should" be dry. VOILA! Water atop counter. I could even see a few droplets dripping down from above. So far I've tracked the leak to the area around where the stove vent is, though exactly where the leak originates within that area still eludes me. It sort of magically appears where it shouldn't be. Still, I've enough evidence to once again badger my neighbor for assistance. (The water's passage before it reaches the counter top is rather convoluted, making it easy to see why we didn't spot it sooner.
By the time I ended my water leak investigation I was keyed up. Between that and near constant thunder so loud even I had no problem hearing it I likely got no more than 2hrs sleep, at best.
Chance for rain and/or T-storms these next three days. Nothing severe is mentioned as of yet. Was able to mow much of the yard yesterday evening to avoid over tall grass when this ends. (A portion of my back yard was too waterlogged to mow yesterday.)
Today and tomorrow scary rain/storms day, with the worst danger as of now the potential for heavy rains, as much as 1.88" today and slightly less than that tomorrow. Flash floodings expected. Rain is expect to begin by 0600, no exercise walk for decrepit me. Nor will I get a chance tomorrow if the forecast holds true.
ADDENDUM: A forecast change moved the start of rain/storms back an hour, allowing me to get in my walk by leaving the house earlier than usual. (I could have left a bit later, but didn't want to risk it.)
Hope I'm not jinxing myself saying this, but while we are still on a Flash Flood Watch until sometime tomorrow, the forecast now predicts appreciably less rainfall than it did early this morning. Today's rains, at one time predicted to begin at around 0630-0700, still haven't arrived, though they are currently expected to before long. Tomorrow is still predicted to be solid rains and storms until at least mid-afternoon if not later. No walk for me. Then again, I said the same about today and had no problem getting one in.
Haven't had a good ole thunderstorm in years
We've had a bunch of storms last week. One of them was really intense. The air was hot and sticky, but then a huge storm blew through. It went from hot / sticky (sun shining occasionally) to a full storm in about an hour, just like the storms we see in Oblivion. Trees were blowing in the wind, and occasionally a lightning bolt would hit within my neighborhood, rocking the house and causing me to cower!
I still love storms though. I can't help but rush out into them for a few seconds, my clothes getting soaked!
Had some nice looking thunder-boomers but didn't get a drop of rain...sadness .
In a nasty one now...FFUUUNNNN .
Well the storm passed last night which had tornadoes in it but none came near my house...though there was a thunder clap last night that sounded like a bomb went off and even shook the house. YEAH that sucker was loud.
Massive storm tonight. In the middle of my back porch getting soaked. Loving it!
Hmm...my online weather site of choice shows us as being under a flood watch from later this morning through Saturday morning. First of those I've seen in quite a while. We had a relatively dry mid/late spring, summer and fall. No T-storm threat today and tomorrow, just steady rain and potentially lots of it.
We just entered a five or so hour window for severe storms, their danger stated to be damaging winds and large hale. After that we've "normal" thunderstorms until after my bedtime. Flash floor warning too. Funny, or not, I was finishing up a Mashinky video until not too long ago. Several minutes after beginning to render the video I looked out the window to see heavy rain. With my hearing I never heard a drop. I hope my last few vocal retakes aren't ruined by background noise! As if I'll be able to tell.
circa 1550 ADDENDUM:
Tornado watch...until 9pm this evening. Doh! Tornado warnings to the south, moving our way. No reports of tornadoes on the ground yet, so far as I know. Just a lot of radar picked up rotation. Still damaging wind and hale threat, though our local weather lady says hale threat is slim. Oh yeah, and potential flooding.
circa 2040 ADDENDUM:
Looks like we're in the clear except for a floor watch. Lost electricity earlier. Was off only 5sec or so. Had the town sirens blaring for quite some time. The local over-the-air TV station was doing solid weather coverage...until it went dead. It's still not back up. Which reminds me I need to go turn it off....never mind, I already turned it off. Don't remember that, but whatever.
Whew... or rather potentially whew. Looks as if we're on the very western edge of today's predicted nasty storms throughout much of the mid-south. For us it looks as if there's a threat of heavy storms for the next hour or two, but no "severe" watches or warnings of any kind...knock on wood. The worst stuff is gonna be some way east in TN and to the its south. Man do I hate tornado season.
Oh. Yikes. You live in the tornado belt eh?
Yes, we're supposed to get some snow up in Maryland. I hope we do. I hope we get slammed, so I gets a day off. Our snow season this year has been dismal. I'm thinking about moving up to Canada.
I live in Maryland once upon a time. I miss the blue crab.
We had some nasty storms early this morning. Now it’s pretty outside!
Nasty storms moving through. Thankfully, I got home from my dental appointment before they moved into my immediate area. So far the worst here (so far as I know) has been hail that hit us a short time ago. Wasn't large size so I doubt it did any real harm. <crosses fingers> We're still under warnings, but most of the scariest threats are now to our east....I hope.
Yikes! Was dressed in walking attire and headed for the front door. Heard ominous sounds of thunder rumbling in the distance. Decided to check local weather online. Turns out we are in the midst of a severe storm warning, with my town in its direct path. Damaging wind and potential torrential rains. It's due to hit any time now. Hmm...I think I hear what might be the start of rain. With my hearing ya never know for sure. <leaves desk to look out a window>
Yup, raining. Not heavily...yet. (I must have heard a brief heavy squall. I heard nothing now other than my ears ringing.) So much for my morning walk, unless this proves a short lived event and does me no harm. One can hope.
Had a couple of good ones rolled in these past couple of days...Loved every bit of it.
Yikes. "Excessive Heat Warning" in affect much of today, with heat index around 110F. Gonna head out for my walk soon as I post this. Wanna get it out of the way early as possible, before it becomes super duper hot.
ADDENDUM:
I'm back. Had I not seen today's forecast I'd not suspect we're due for a scorcher. Weather was pleasantly mild (for this time of year) the entire walk. The sun was up when I left the house, but not yet above rooftops. It hadn't risen much higher at walk's end.
Recent walks haven't been as energetic as they were not long ago because, I surmise, I had to abandon rowing machine arm pulls and sit-ups. Which reminds me I need to resume dumbbell exercises. (It can be said that any exercise I do is a dumbbell exercise, but we'll ignore that.)
Another day, another Excessive Heat Warning. From circa 10am until around sunset. They never end, it seems. Super hot. Super muggy. Non existent Climate Change is the gift that keeps on giving. You can bet I'll head out for my exercise-walk in a few minutes.
Got some thunder this weekend, followed by some rain (!) which was much needed to say the least.
But we need more, much more. Ugh
Man o man. By 0700 it's gonna be 90F! Gonna get today's exercise-walk out of the way soon as it's light enough outside to hopefully not get ran over. Need to mow this evening. That's not gonna be pleasant. Can't really postpone it as we've a string of storm days beginning tomorrow. By the time that ends and ground dries grass would be too high.
ADDENDUM:
Done! Finished my walk at 0615. Wish the lawn was dry enough to mow this time of day. Be great to get that out of the way while temp is still bearable.
Lots of thunder rumblings at the moment. Checked online. We're subject to heavy storms for a while and under a tornado watch until roughly 8am.
No T-storms today, but darn cold temps!!!!! In the teens with "feels like" in the single digits! Brrrrrr.... Naturally it's grocery day. I could put it off until tomorrow, but temps then are predicted to be only a few degrees higher than today. So off I go in a few minutes. I'm dressed for the occasion. Insulated top and bottom undies. Two layers of socks, jeans, sweat shirt. old military field jacket, neck scarf, light toboggan, heavy toboggan over it. Thick gloves. Roads aren't iced. My car windshields don't need scraping. Should be okay, barring misfortune? One possible problem. The latch of my front driver-side car door sometimes won't catch in place during super cold weather. That door won't stay closed when that happens. Not a good situation to be in. We shall see.
The tie-in to this thread is that by Thursday temps are in the sixties!, and we experience our first days-long series of potential severe T-storms that herald the beginning to Tornado Season.
Addendum:
Back! Nothing to it. Frankly, I'm rather we had these cold temps for the next some months rather than suffer through tornado season. Well, so long as there are no big winter storms to contend with. We've not had one of those in years.
By the time it arrived, our first severe storms threat this spring had shrunk from days to a 3-4 hour window early one afternoon. Turned out to be much ado about nothing. The local TV station ran solid weather coverage two expended periods, and our "city" warning siren sounded for a grand total of 4-5 seconds. We were on the edge of the storm front, the nasty stuff traveling northeastward just to our south. Some pretty hard rain is about all we suffered.
Enjoyed some thunder last night. Pitch black, no rain, no wind. Just some lightning in the far distance coupled with some soft booms. Amazing.
And now we have gentle but steady rain - PERFECT!
Was worried when nasty storms moved through much of the country late last week. We were at first predicted to be on its outer edge, thus face only a minimal risk of severe weather. Friday, predictions were revised, putting us at high risk. Our 'bad time' was expected to be early Saturday, with the front due to move beyond us to the east by 5-7am. Took what precautions I could, which is next to none. Woke Saturday morning to find nothing amiss. It definitely rained heavily during the night, but I, of course, heard none of it.
In the end, the storm adversely affected me in one way only. I should have uploaded a TpF Scenic Excursions episode overnight, timed for publication 0345 Saturday. I didn't dare, fearing electrical outage or worse. I'm not going to try again until this coming Friday evening. On average, I get a few more views when a video is published at the start of a weekend. Since TpF2's release, interest in my TpF1 video has dropped significantly. I get nowhere near the views I used to, and I never got many. An irony is that I originally planned to upload the video in question Thursday night, set for Saturday morning publication. When the time came that evening I was too sleepy to mess with it, so postponed until Friday, not foreseeing the severe weather threat escalation.
Gah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crappoli! Strong tornado plowed through a portion of the city 8-10 miles away this afternoon. The city where I do all my shopping, have medical appointments, etc. The city where my Brother lives.
I watched it on TV from start to finish, having been alerted to possible severe weather at my online-weather-site-of-choice. Turned on my local TV station. Solid severe weather reporting, to the exclusion of all else, which is still going on. The tornado was first reported south of us, heading Northeast. The funnel then disappeared. Our weatherman said not to trust it, as it looked as if it would reform, possibly over the city. Which is exactly what happened. Class 3 or 4 was his guess, not yet confirmed. They had a live-cam active, pointed at the storm cloud. We saw the funnel reform, touch the ground, and carve a path through the city, debris flying. Darn scary! The city's big mall, where I worked some years ago, was hit hard. Among stores receiving the most damage, our area's only book store, and Best Buy. (A little sad irony, when talking on the phone earlier today, pre storm, with my brother, he mentioned the that only reason the visit the mall these days is its book store. I agreed. So much for mall visits.)
I called my bro soon as it was safe after the tornado passed beyond the city. He's okay, as is his property.
I'm fine too. Well, as fine as a decrepit person can be. My little town was at first included the tornado's possible path, but it ended up passing us to the east.
I suspect clips of this to appear on YouTube, but at the moment my internet is responding at a snail's pass. Oh...here it is...what we saw as the tornado touched down and passed through the city!
(YouTube Video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijEG7xKLnCo (YouTube video)
Wow. That is terrifying. Thank goodness you and your brother are ok. I have lived in the Midwest for almost all of my life, but have thankfully never been near a tornado.
Which is a good thing, since we Witches have a bad history with those things...
Like SubRosa said - Wow. So glad you and your brother are okay.
A short after-storm update by a station unknown to me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfK_Ei3HHiA (YouTube video)
That is terrible!
Doh! Severe Thunderstorm Warning just issues. Tornado watch too.
It's been snowing all night, along with high winds. Just love Spring.
Hmmm... just checked out the weekend forecast. As of now we're getting strong T-storms Sunday from 0300 until nighttime. Unlike our past few storm days, when severe storms were 'possible,' this Sunday they are 'expected.' Not an overly encouraging forecast, I must say.
This is our first 'stormy' day in quite a while. T-storms until late afternoon. Chance of locally heavy rains. Gusty winds. Possibility of small hail. As of now, none of this is being labelled as 'severe'. No weather warnings have been issues. I have, however, decided to postpone my Monday morning grocery run until tomorrow. Luckily, I have enough of everything to last the extra day without altering planned meals. Expect milk. This is one of those rare weeks when I need to buy two gallons of it as opposed to one. Enough remains for tomorrow's breakfast, but not enough for both it and a Wowbutter sammich for today's lunch. I can and prolly will lunch on soup today instead, since I drink water with that.
A weather related matter I might or might not have mentioned elsewhere. Our Mall, damaged in last April's tornado, is still not repaired. Its only stores remaining upon are several 'anchors' that survived the tornado unscathed. I believe them to be Target, J.C. Penny's, and maybe Dillards (sp?), but don't quote me. The city has declared the unrepaired portion an eye-sore and safety hazard, and has given Mall's owner(s) several months to clean up the mess and raze what isn't repaired. If it's not done by then... Well, politics being what it is, it's likely little to nothing will happen other than an issuing an extension. Other than jobs lost, I don't much care one way or the other. The only Mall stores I visited those last few years were Best Buy and Barnes & Noble. Best Buy has already re-located elsewhere. Barns & Noble does not plan to reopen in our city. I suppose I might visit Target once in a blue moon were the pandemic over and done with. By that time, who known what the Mall's situation will be?
We haven't had a serious T-storm here in awhile either. Today it is raining lightly but steady, a good soaker rain. Ground is dry and we need it.
I like sitting on the back porch watching the light show of a t-storm. My dog though runs to the basement to sit it out in a dark corner.
Had a couple come rolling in last night .
Even my rock pile in the high desert is getting rain. Nice rain over the night with one embedded T-storm. Now a good steady rain for most of the day. Much needed and very welcome.
It is cold also. I'm at 3000 feet and the mountain next to me at 4000 feet has a light covering of snow. The rain is now gradually turning to snow - great fun!
Sitting at the computer prior to breakfast, I noticed what sounded like sleet hitting the roof. If my ears could hear it, it has to be significant. I visited my online weather site of choice. Was greeted by a Severe Ice Storm Warning! Totally unexpected. We've not had any significant winter storms in years.
I hope this isn't a repeat of 2009, when a large area lost electricity for up to weeks due to ice damage. I went without for five-plus days, saved by long-gone next-door-neighbors who let me sleep on a mattress in front of their living room gas-powered faux fireplace, while they stayed with relatives in an unaffected area. That, and the city providing meals (for cost) at our community center, powered by a generator.
It just now turned light enough to see outside. Good news, no noticeable ice accumulation on trees, rooftops, etc. As it stopped precipitation some time ago, we might be okay.
ADDENDUM: now later in the morning and a bit lighter outside, I do indeed notice what looks to be a very thin accumulation of ice on rooftops, and a solid covering on our streets. Thankfully I don't have to set foot outside the house today except to check for mail. No further precipitation, so maybe all's well?
Glad the ice storm wasn't so bad and that you can stay inside, Decrepit
What a day! Just after breakfast electricity began cutting out for about 4 sec at regular intervals. Those intervals were far enough apart to not interfere with my day, except they were too close together to allow computer/internet use. This persisted until a let for groceries about 1515. I returned home to find no further periodic brief outages. So far. <crosses fingers>
The grocery run wasn't all that bad except for being super cold. Near zero degrees coldness. Glad I braved it, as the rest of the week is even worse than today up until Saturday. Not only super cold but expected snows. On the debit side, Walmart was out of Wowbutter (can't be substituted) and the mouthwash I always use (I substituted), and didn't have any apples I was willing to pay for.
Yesterday evening's computer use didn't last long. After pinning the above post, I played TpF1 for maybe 20min. Then brief, periodic outages reappeared. After the first, I shut everything down and retired to sofa for the day, there to read until falling asleep. The issue seems to have resolved itself maybe 30min prior to when I usually take a sleeping pill (if I do) and don CPAP equipment. Up until that point, I assumed I'd need to forgo CPAP. Not sure why, but Entergy never phoned me about these outages, as they used to always do.
Today - Wednesday are our theoretically scary winter storm days. Up to 8 inches today, a break tomorrow, then up to 5 inches Wednesday. (Up until a few days ago snowfall was predicted to be considerably lighter.) With grocery shopping out of the way, I'm good to go, barring lengthy power outages. <crosses fingers>
I'm glad you're stocked up on chow so you don't have to out. Hope your electricity holds up.
Thanks
Only 0725ish and our street has basically disappeared, marked only by mailboxes.
Lunchtime addendum:
Eyeballing the weather outside, it looks as if we have about four inches snow accumulation, with hours more to come. I spell looming outages. Entergy's site says they expect our worst days to be Wed/Thur, not today.
Snow finally moved out of my local area around daylight today, maybe a little later. Lots of accumulation yesterday. No outage, thank goodness. Not yet. We're not out of the woods yet. It won't climb above freezes for several more days.
<sighs> Looks like tornado season has begun in earnest. Significant threat of severe storms throughout the day, with possibility of isolated tornados beginning later on.
0820 - We're now in a short-lived trough. Next round will contain storms with hail possibility. No tornado threat with it, as of now. That's later.
0930 - As of now, it looks like 'bad' storms in the next wave will pass just to the east of us as it heads north. We are still subject to heavy rains and wind. The tornado threat is still scheduled for this evening.
Decrepit that's weird you got snow all the way down there. You are in Florida, right?
Sure, we have 'em up here too, Renee. That's where the mythology of Thor came from; when throwing his hammer it created the thunder and lightning.
The More You Know
With any luck <crosses fingers> today's ongoing nasty weather will continue passing just to the east of us on its way north. No more than a mile or two away if the weather map is accurate. A slight, brief shift of wind and we're in the thick of it. At least one more bout of storms passes through later tonight, but its severity is questionable. Mississippi and Alabama seem to have gotten the worst of it this time.
I hate Spring.
Autumn, Spring, Summer, Winter here.
@Khajiit, yes, in the black mountains south of, and looking down into, Las Vegas, NV. I enjoy spring, autumn and summer here. Happy as a torchbug in amber at 100 degrees because it is so dry. Don't like the cold though so winter's a distant 4th place. Had an inch of snow a couple weeks ago!
I've lived in lots of places and learned long ago that, for me, dry air rules. Pensacola and Washington DC were among the most miserable climates I've seen (in the US) due to the humidity.
I don't hate any seasons, but I do dislike summer sometimes. Humid weather, yuck. Edit: Acadian knows what I'm talking about.
From most favorite to least favorite I am like: Autumn > Winter > Spring > Summer. Winter for me includes plenty of coldness and snow. I do not like the milder winters we had in 2019 and 2020.
Interesting, Crow. So when does everything turn green / bloom? What month?
The problem with spring (in Maryland) especially in the past, is some years it would too hot too fast. One week it's 40 degrees, the next two it'll be in the 80s. Everything blooms at once. Everyone's sneezing, or if they're not it's because addicted to Benadryl. There is no real true spring during those years, it goes from winter to summer, just like that. And we can't even enjoy all the flowers because within a week or two the heat causes them to wilt, so most of them are gone.
In fact, global warming has had an opposite effect in Maryland. These last few years spring has come on much more gradually, which I like.
Another stormy evening for us. So far, no tornado warning. All tornado watches have thus far passed just to our west or our east. Some storms producing tornado watches to the south might well encompass us as they head north. Good news is that the last round of storms should pass beyond us by bedtime.
Two day of storms, today and tomorrow. As of now, nothing worse than potentially gusty winds and heavy rain is expected from them. Sunday through Tuesday will be stormy. Too soon to know if those are potentially damaging.
What the.....?????
This was predicted to be a mildly stormy day. A couple of hours of rain, lightning, gusty winds, and the potential for non-worrisome small hail. That was the extent of it. This forecast held sway the previous time I checked, only a couple of hours ago. I just double-checked. We're now facing some hours of severe storms, beginning not long from now. I'm in the path of what looks to be the worst of them. Expected hail damage. A much stronger chance of tornados.
I think what happened is the front is moving in an unusual direction. Looking at the weather map, I'd expect it to pass us by to the west traveling northeast. Nope. It's headed East Southeast.
Here's hoping whatever happens is less dire than forecast.
ADDENDUM:
Now a bit past 1500, all I can say is "What a day!". Looking out the front window right after posting the above, I was greeted to a lovely afternoon, blue sky and a few fluffy clouds. Looking out the computer-room window (back of the house) showed dark, scary totally storm-cloud infested sky. Now, looking out the computer room window I see a lovely sun-drenched afternoon with a few fluffy clouds. Looking out the front windows shows much the same close by, but heavy clouds further back. Luckily, those are traveling away from us. Looks as if whatever might have befallen us passed us by unscathed. There's a little water build up in the center of the street, so it must have rained a bit while the front passed above us. It takes a super heavy rain for me to hear it hit the roof.
So far as I can tell, that's it for the day, threat wise.
Up until sometime today, we've been forecast for constant thunderstorms between tomorrow the 17th and running through the 27th! Double-checked the forecast a few minutes ago. Tomorrow is a rain only day. Three straight days of thunderstorms, none potentially severe as of yet, then days of overcast skies. The 25th is another rain day. I didn't look beyond that.
To play it safe, I make my weekly grocery run first thing this morning rather than tomorrow. As of now, I don't need to leaving the house again until next week, except to check mail and exercise-walks, weather permitting.
My area was hit by tornadoes yesterday, 10 Dec. I wasn't aware of the danger until faintly hearing the town's sirens a bit past 2030. I was at the computer at the time, where else would I be?, working on a TS2022 YouTube episode. Looking out the living-room window, nothing looked amiss. I decided to play it safe and turn on my TV (which gets used only during severe weather threats). The local station's Storm Team was broadcasting nonstop updates on a nasty front moving through the region.
A minute or two or three later they announced a tornado spotted a few miles to my southwest, heading northeast. Soon after, the tornado was reported to be 'at' my town. I'd used those few minutes to fully dress and stick in my teeth, then sat glued to the TV hoping for the best.
Thankfully, the best did indeed come to pass. So far as I know, the funnel remained in the sky as it passed over us. In any case, I've heard of no damage in my immediate vicinity.
Much of the local area wasn't so lucky. We were hit by multiple tornadoes. Lives were lost, people injured. One Nursing Home took a direct hit. Another, in a different town, was damaged. Lots of property damage across the region. I don't (yet) know the full extent of it, this being a Saturday with no daytime TV news coverage.
But again, I came through okay.
Wow, close call there, Decrepit. Glad to know everything went fine!
Glad you weathered things okay, Decrepit, and didn't end up in Oz!
Oh-oh . . . Winter Storm Warning here. We drop below freezing and stay there until sometime Sunday. One to three inches of ice is expected. Last time this happened, back in 2009, I was without power for 5-6 days. I was younger then (duh!), and survived relatively unscathed except for losing two trees. Also, neighbors let me stay in their generator-heated house while they visited relatives who didn't lose power. Those neighbors are long gone. Hopefully, this won't be anywhere close to as bad as it was back in 2009. We shall see, I reckon. <crosses fingers>
Unless something unexpected happens later today, my local area seems to have gotten off easy, winter storm wise. Road icing and closed institutions/businesses seems about the extent of it. Neither my brother nor I lost power. I set out trash yesterday for today's pickup. I don't think it happened. I braved the weather only long enough to check mail (nothing) and bring in the garbage container. Thankfully, other than mail checks, I don't need to leave the house until Monday at the soonest. Which is fine by me
Whew, glad your power's up!
One thing I do miss from my old home was hearing the sound of the rain and wind hitting the metal roof and making that soothing thunderstorm sound. First thunderstorm I heard in the new house I could barely hear it.
Wheeeeeeeeeeee . . .
This has been a rough week, weather wise. Severe storm threats Monday thru Wednesday evening. The last of those threats did a good bit of damage. Luckily, the atmosphere in my immediate area was stable enough that the front did not generate its damaging storms until just after it passed my town, headed east.
Thursday and yesterday were supposed to be safe, with little more than rains forecast for yesterday evening.
Shut down the computer last night around 2000. Retired to the sofa to read awhile before donning CPAP gear. I'd not read long when the town's warning sirens sounded. Turned on the living room TV to KAIT. Was greeted with live coverage of a weather emergency in progress. Tornado on the ground. Large hail. Damaging winds. My town was within the emergency area. The storm almost on top of us.
Pulled on a pair of jeans, to have wallet and keys on me. Exchanged house-slippers to more rugged footwear. Stuck in my teeth. Hoped for the best. (My house has no "tornado safe spot".) Thankfully, the storm's core passed just enough to our north to spare us the worst of the damage. We did get a lengthy, heavy hail pounding. Once the storm was comfortably east, I braved the outdoors to check the car for windshield/body damage. All's well on that front. I couldn't check the roof until this morning. I 'think' it's OK, but need better visibility to know for sure. (The sky remains overcast.)
I've not yet found a post of KAIT's stellar-as-usual storm coverage on YouTube. I did, however, find a record of real-time coverage from a non-local source unfamiliar to me. It begins not long after I turned on the TV. My town is seen within the emergency area.

Another storm outridden at Decrepit's!
Good to know you were spared yet again
Glad you made it through this one okay, Decrepit.
I have enjoyed them since childhood, but at my now retirement home, they can get a bit intense and (wind) damaging. Lost the wind chimes to just a medium one a few days ago.
We might be somewhat off-the-hook. The atmosphere has remained stable enough to lessen the chance of severe storms from the nasty front moving across the region today. <crosses fingers>
It's one of those days.
I was sitting here at the computer, watching a YT video, as my Paperwhite recharged. All of a sudden, I hear the distinct sounds of a thunderstorm. If I can hear a storm, it's gotta be significant. I fired up the living room TV. Local TV didn't have weather coverage of any sort, not even a scrolling bar. I left the TV on and returned to the computer.
Within minutes I hear hail hit the roof. I return to the TV. Nothing. Looked out the living room window. It's raining cats and dogs. I've had enough dogs today, thank you. I returned to the computer and fired up my online weather channel of choice. It showed my town smack in the middle of a severe storm. Then POOF! Electrical outage.
It was short-lived, lasting no more than five-ten minutes. By the time I booted into Windows and again launched my online weather channel, the storm was exiting my town to the east.
Neither PC nor Paperwhite seems damaged. <crosses fingers>
Checking local weather a few minutes ago, I was greeting with a Red Flag Warning in effect from 1300 until 2000 today. Don't recall ever seeing that before. Here's what it means:
...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM TO 8 PM CDT THURSDAY FOR
STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS...LOW HUMIDITY...AND LOW FUEL MOISTURE FOR
PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST ARKANSAS AND THE MISSOURI BOOTHEEL...
The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Red Flag
Warning, which is in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM CDT Thursday.
* WIND...20 foot winds between 12 to 20 mph.
* HUMIDITY...relative humidity values below 25 percent.
* 10 HOUR FUEL MOISTURE...10 percent or less
* IMPACTS...any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
We have those conditions all the time out here in the desert. Fortunately, rocks don't burn and we gotz no treez.
Yet another severe winter front is hitting my area, beginning this afternoon and lasting until Wednesday afternoon. The threat from this one is ice accumulation that will result in tree damage and power outages. It's predicted to not be as bad as 2009's ice disaster, but bad enough to cause similar results. In my case, the 2009 icing resulted in loss of power for over five days. (Longer for my brother.) I survived that one by living on a mattress in front of a neighbor's gas fireplace, which I assume had its own fuel source. (They stayed with relatives in an area unaffected.) I'm not as robust as I was back then, and have different neighbors, so hope whatever happens isn't as long-lasting.
Funny you should say that. . . I'm watching snow fall right now and we have about an inch on the ground so far. We do have the ocassional light snow and very rarely a pretty good snowfall.
Well poot! We are under our first tornado watch of the year. It's quite unusual to get them this early. The likely cause is warmer than usual temps. As for the watch, it's thankfully short-lived, at the moment due to expire at 0800. We shall see.
ADDENDUM: The watch ended early. Were it a bit warmer I'd go for an exercise-walk, carrying an umbrella just-in-case.
If the forecast holds true, we are in for a very rough afternoon/evening (up until around my normal bedtime). Strong winds, large hail and possibly strong tornadoes. An irony is that, two Monday's ago, driving to Walmart for groceries, our local NPR affiliate announced that an El Nino we've been subject to for the past three years is over, and that we should now see fewer severe storms. Since then, parts of Mississippi have been flattened by tornadoes. Today's storm front is, on paper, about the worst (locally) I've seen quite some time.
