So they are announcing that they will be announcing the game in a week and a half? I just love corporations. It's like the soft opening vs. grand opening in Oceans 13.

When is opening night?
July the 3th.
Got fireworks the stroke of midnight the whole charade.
Are we going in now? It's already open.
No, it's a soft opening.
To test the place before the grand opening.
Yeah it's kinda like a out of town preview on the town.
Soft opening? Grand opening?
When they opened the Flamingo one day it was closed the next day it was open.
End of story.

I wonder if any of that was actual gameplay footage? Obviously the pre-war stuff was all just artwork done for the trailer. But a lot of the other stuff looked like it might have been rendered in the game itself.

I like what they’ve shown of the setting. This is the first time I’ve been excited about a Fallout game. smile.gif

Posted by: hazmick Jun 3 2015, 06:43 PM

I saw dogs, deathclaws, and power armour. Everything seems to be in order.

Bit strange to have a voiced character in a trailer though. Where's my silent protagonist?

I saw December 31, 2015 as a release date verysad.gif

Maybe, but my son and I were wondering if they are going to have us Player's experience the initial drop of bombs and having to get into the vault (111). Like maybe we start off in that house and have to run up that hill to the vault with the crowds - maybe as that baby in the crib or something. Then maybe have a time lapse like they did when we were babies in Fallout 3; then we have to emerge (or something).

And it looked a lot like Boston to me, the water was to the east of the land; old time-y ships in the harbor, etc. And the architecture of the houses most def looked Bostonian.

Did anyone recognize any landmarks in that vid? I didn't, but haven't been to Boston before.

I wondered about that too. Well, most of it was the radio announcer's voice; and they always have the "War never changes" in the trailers. But deathclaws, and they were looking at the power armor as if it was a relic of the past, which in light of the radio broadcast might mean a new battle - especially with the starships overhead in this one.

According to some folks on the internet, there were some Boston landmarks. That means nothing to me but I gather there were a lot of people hoping for Boston.

WOO HOO! Finally someone who can point the Boston landmarks out to me! Thank you, Thank you! I was going to Google Boston and dig around till i found some similar scenes, lol. All I knew was the old time-y ships and the Boston Harbor; and is the Liberty Bell there? I can't remember for some reason.

Posted by: Grits Jun 3 2015, 08:59 PM

The Liberty Bell is in Philly, so I’m glad I didn’t spot that in the trailer!

I’m super excited that it’s Boston. smile.gif

I’m not going to worry about player voices at this point. I took that to be a way of getting the war line into the trailer.

I've been rooting for Boston since those documents were leaked in 2013. It sounded too legit, and so Kotaku thought or they wouldn't have risked posting it as a news article.

I don't know why I couldn't remember about where the Liberty Bell was, how embarrassing! Thank you for letting me know, lol.

One voice that I heard we will hear is 3 Dog's. I am glad of that, I liked hearing him in the background of my game, lol.

Oh, I'll bet you start out as the baby in that house and then get to go back in after the bombs drop and explore the rubble of your own former home!

Posted by: Callidus Thorn Jun 3 2015, 09:59 PM

It looked like that baby was outside the vault with it's mother when the bomb went off.

Anyway, just a few thoughts...

Looking at the trailer, looks like the Enclave are back again, possibly more prominent than they were in Fallout 3.

Then there's the question of the power armour, since there are two different sets seen: one in the vertibird(?), the other a rebuilt relic(the shoulders are different).

Brotherhood of Steel resistance in an Enclave dominated area possibly?

And it doesn't look like the area was hit too badly either. Seems like there's been a lot of rebuilding there too.

Fallout! Nice!

So... Is cannibalism in again?

I can hardly wait. Fallout is probably my favorite game series in existence. Guess I'll have to get an Xbox One now.

Posted by: mALX Jun 4 2015, 02:01 AM

I wonder if they will have a 'Field of Dreams' reference in Fenway Park - like Archibald "Moonlight" Graham; or "Go the Distance."

Posted by: mALX Jun 4 2015, 02:29 AM

Oh, and maybe the dog is part of a quest to get him as a companion; where either he brings you to your former home or you find it and he is there (because he was the one that went to the empty crib!)

Posted by: haute ecole rider Jun 4 2015, 02:53 AM

I've never played Fallout. Any of them. Post-Apocalyptic series with mutants and zombies and rusty malfunctioning mechanix never appealed to me all that much.

But OMG! The DOG! If dogs are rendered like that in-game, I just might get Fallout IV just for the DOG!

PS I'm very partial to GSDs simply because my first best friend had a most awesome GSD who loved to greet me with muddy paws on my shoulders and slobbery tongue on my face whenever I came over to the house. Kerri and Babe were part of 4H and did very well in the dog obedience classes at the County Fairs. Kerri used ASL with Babe (she was deaf like me). They shared the same joie de vivre and I adored the both of them. I miss them both, and am always looking for Babe in every GSD I meet.

And this Fallout DOG could be Babe reincarnated!

Wait, you wrote a Sci-Fi story that reminded me strongly of the Broken Steel questline in Fallout 3; and you wrote it BEFORE the Fallout 3 game came out!

So read that story you wrote again, and you will want to play!

Did you write more than one Sci-Fi? (You only showed me one).

Posted by: haute ecole rider Jun 4 2015, 05:40 AM

I've written several genres - Western, historical, fantasy, sci-fi, and contemporary, among others. My first NaNoWriMo effort was a personal riff on the typical Korean contemporary melodrama.

Are you speaking of the one with the twins? If so, I really don't consider that sci-fi, or even post-apocalyptic, so much as future history, if that makes sense? In that one I was building a world that could develop out of the political realities of the mid-1990s. Of course, if I were to write that story today, it would be a vastly different geopolitical reality.

I don't know, nothing has been said yet - but I'd almost bet that it will be through Steam, because they are hand in pocket with them on everything now. Steam has a long term contract with them that is extremely beneficial to Bethesda.

You can barely get the patches and CS for Oblivion on the official site anymore; and several of the used game stores in our town have closed because (according to them) they can't compete with Valve-Steam, it is cornering the market on games - everything is going this way now; soon we won't be able to buy a hard copy of a game.

I don't like it either, but can't give up gaming the Fallout games in protest.

I hate it, and feel like they have us by the delicate parts; because once everything and all your money is tied up in Steam games, all they have to do is start charging monthly fees for us to play our own games and we will be stuck - no way to play our games without them.

Sucks; I really don't like feeling like I don't really own a game I paid for.

Posted by: mirocu Jun 4 2015, 04:39 PM

All this sounds like what a dictator would do; cornering and getting rid of anything that isn´t what they decided should be.

I´m boycotting any game that forces me to use Steam or any equivalent, including Fallout and TES games. I stick with Oblivion and Fallout 3 and I´m happy happy.gif

That is the same decision my son has been trying to make since I broke his XBox = get another XBox that won't be supported but will play all the games he has; or buy the One and have a supported unit but no games to play on it/having to replace all his games.

To be honest, I love steam. I find it very handy to have all of my games (or at least 99% of them because Blizzard doesn't do steam and because I also use GOG) in one single place. No need to worry about cd's or DVD's breaking anymore and needing to pay the entire amount again to purchase a new cd/dvd. No need to worry about being limited to a single pc to run my game on, no hassle when I get a new laptop/pc. All I need to do is make sure I never lose my access codes for Steam and I'm all set.

The only reason I sometimes feel a bout of nostalgia towards hard copies of games, is thinking back to the time when developers used to make large and intricate manuals and other stuff and shipped that with their games. But since that time seems to be past with the exception of a few special editions where you pay double for such items, I've embraced the digital era of Steam.

I've read your point about starting to charge monthly fees. Call me overly optimistic, or naive if you'd prefer that term ;-) but I don't think that will be the future. I think Valve is making tons of money as it is on steam, especially because so many people are using it. So I think they simply don't have/feel a need to change things up. Doing that would make it less interesting and would invite the start of a lot more competition, so why risk that when it's already a money making machine for them?

Posted by: mALX Jun 5 2015, 05:14 PM

Alex! It is so good to see you here! Do you still enjoy writing? And have you produced any more masterpieces like "Cyrodiil?" I hope so, what a gift you have!

Convenience - Yes; I have Steam and my games loaded on both my PC and laptop so I can take them with me too; and it is convenient not to have an additional bundle of games to carry.

Passwords/access codes - I had just changed mine 5 days ago, and yesterday tried to log in - it is not taking either my old password or my new one, so I am in a panic till that is straightened out.

Maybe I am just a worrier, but it is a concern to me that one day they will start to charge - even a small nominal fee.

Without the disk in my possession it feels like my ownership of the game hangs by a thread Steam is controlling - (and my internet provider as well). In the past if my internet went down I could still play my PC games; but with Steam I lose the ability to play if I lose the internet.

A similar situation came up with my XBox 360; and ever since then I've been a bit skittish about someone else having access to controlling my games. What happened then: XBox refused to let me play any of my games if I didn't accept one of their updates.

That was a real light bulb moment for me. Right after I accepted the update and had everything running smoothly; I unplugged the internet from my XBox 360. (never had to worry about that happening again, and my games worked perfectly till my 360 died from RROD).

On Steam I have tried to do the same thing by putting it in offline mod; but every start-up it searches for Steam to be connected.

I really hope the day never comes when Valve-Steam starts charging; really hope I am worried for nothing on that. They are definitely a massive conglomeration and don't need it; but in the past year I have seen a few decisions of theirs which were not based on morals or ethics, where money was their bottom line and they pushed every qualm aside to achieve it. That is the basis for my lack of trust in them.

Truthfully; when Gabe Newell backed off on the paid mods issue, I was shocked in a good way - (though I think pressure from Bethesda was most likely behind his decision). Honestly, I never expected him to back down when money was involved, and was pleased to find myself wrong.

It was so good to see you on the boards again, Alex!

Oh, and I have been wondering if you (and Starge) will be going to E3 this year? Will you bring us back some pictures of your visit there if you do?

Posted by: SubRosa Jun 5 2015, 06:08 PM

I am an old school gamer, and confess to loving having my games on disc. I loved in the old days when I could walk into a computer store and there would be aisle after aisle of computer games. It was one way I kept up on what games were out. Now you are lucky if there is even one little shelf of games in a store, and I barely know what games are out, or even exist.

But I do like the convenience of online shopping. Not to mention not needing to put the disc in the drive whenever I play a game. Gog.com is wonderful. I have bought more than a dozen games from them in the last year alone. All DRM-free, that I can play anytime, anywhere, without an internet connection (after I have downloaded the setup files of course).

Steam I do not like so much. The reason is the DRM that Steam forces on everyone that uses their games, and how you must have their client running whenever you play, even offline. It is insulting, as they are basically saying that they believe all of their paying customers are criminals who are going to steal their games at the first opportunity. Not to mention DRM schemes do nothing to dissuade piracy. You could have downloaded a pirated, non-Steam version of Skyrim the very first day it came out. Add in that DRM schemes often prevent paying customers from playing the games they legally bought, and they are just bad for everyone. They are even bad for the companies that use them, because they had to pay for it, and it literally does nothing.

But DRM aside, and even the possibility of greedy online storefronts like Steam charging us a monthly subscription to play the games we already bought, there is also the danger of hackers. A hacker attack taking down a site the size of Steam seems unlikely. Until you consider that such an attack did the very same thing to Sony last year, and now we are reading the private emails of their executives. TBH, given how many hackers are also gamers, it is kind of surprising that Steam has made it this long without a major incident. Or maybe that is why half the time when I try to install a Steam game I get the error message "Steam Service is not available, try again later".

Can't believe this hasn't been updated. There's about 15-20 minutes of gameplay online now from E3 and a list of awesome gameplay features.

Confirmed features:

50 base weapons with 700 modifications

The ability to craft a variety of items and even buildings

Largest world that Bethsoft has ever built (according to Todd, this probably excludes ESO)

Retro style games that play on the pip boy in FO4

Spoken character dialogue (Doesn't look bad at all, surprisingly) that can be walked in and out of.

Layered armor with various modifications/customization options for pieces like chest, arms, legs.

Collectors edition comes with pip boy that accepts Iphones/Androids as the screen and a pip boy app for phones.

The dog can receive commands like attack, retreive, and stay with a simple system.

You ride in a vertibird at least once and can shoot them down as they fly by.

The game starts pre-war and flashes forward 200 years when you awaken in the vault. No spoilers yet, I'm betting cryosleep similar to FO3.

Other noteable things I noticed in the videos:

Character animations are much more fluid than any prior Bethsoft game.

Lots of variations in weapon types and firing modes like semi automatic, fully automatic, bolt action, and break over.

I forgot about this thread - moving my posts from the Everything to here:

Elder Scrolls Legends = a strategy card game

Fallout Shelter = FREE APP on your IPhone to play!

Fallout 4 Release Date moved up to November 10, 2015 !!!!

Collector's Edition comes with a working Pip Boy !!!!

On the spot in game modding as per Ghastley and Arthmoor's mods - no mention was made of the Geck, which really worries me, but i have no "Twitch" account to ask them about it.

They are giving away figurines to anyone who texts them with questions that get answered on the show, so hurry and ask about the Geck !!!!!!! laugh.gif

*

They have voiced over a thousand names and have a child whose appearance is based on your character and your spouses character.

So then they say you are the only one who survives the vault? I don't think so, why go to all that trouble for a baby who looks like your character and has its name voiced and then kill it off in the beginning of the game?

Bethesda does not kill off children. I think there has to be some reason they spent so many resources on a baby and were so careful to mention that it is created to look like you and your spouse - there was no "IF you want a baby," it was a given you would have one. So it has to be a part of the storyline.

I think the storyline will involve you leaving your Cryochamber to find your child. (like maybe you wake up after 200 years and discover all the other remains in the vault, but no remains for your child and evidence the Enclave has taken the baby)

From what Todd said, the settlement building will be allowed only in certain areas and are prefabricated pieces you set up in preset locations - just like is done in Skyrim's Hearthfire DLC.

Also, in the interview afterwards Todd Howard let it slip that crafting these (Hearthstyle type) houses and settlements and the ability to modify the guns and armor will be accessed via perks (or a new perk tree); so if there is a ceiling on Levels it could mean giving up some of your favorite perks to gain access to the new crafting skills.

The two things that were NOT mentioned that I wondered about:

1. Will there be a Geck?

2. Will there be a low ceiling on levels like Fallout 3 had?

Anyone with an IPhone should be able to download the free App "Fallout Shelter" and play it on their phone right now; that was released last night.

The first thing I noticed from hazmick's vid was the vault guy in the red dress. Finally we get clothing that does not change based on your character's gender! Too bad the TES games don't have that.

I love how the new pipboy looks. I noticed that the fallout boy icons in it are now animated. I wonder how hard that will be to change to a fallout girl though? sad.gif

That gun at 3:00 looks like the Stormtrooper Blaster from Star Wars! laugh.gif

Getting into the powered armor looked really cool. I remember in the other vid it even has jump jets, which I thought were neat. I love the new hud it gives you when you are inside the armor.

Godzilla! ohmy.gif I am with hazmick. I love the Deathclaws!

I agree on the Deathclaws, to me the ones in Fallout 3 kind of looked cute - these don't have that problem.

@ SubRosa - if you get the Collector's Edition of the game you get a working Pip Boy that connects to your IPhone; and in game you can play little pac man type games on it, lol.

I was going to upgrade my order to the Collector's Edition (I already prepaid for the game) - but somewhere on the internet I saw that it was 119.00 for the Collector's Edition - now if that is correct; I won't upgrade to it.

(However, if it comes with all the DLC, then I would most def be willing to for that price and get the Pip Boy !!! WOO HOO !!!!! )

YES!!!! I saw that in the first E3 showcase, and again in this one - that power armor is very cool - especially how you step into it!

But I don't think the Player gets to keep it (unless they run off with it and don't finish that quest laugh.gif ) because it would kind of overpower the Player through the beginning of the game. (plus they showed the Player later on and he was back in the Vault 111 suit, lol).

Posted by: Arcry Jun 16 2015, 04:05 AM

I saw everything I wanted and more. Terrain that seemed to BREAK when explosives were used. The customization of armor. The variety of it all. And. Power Armor. It finally feels like Power Armor. THE Edge in the Great War that had the Chinese so damned worried. Just. Everything was wonderful. It looked good, it felt good. Just. Yes.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 2 2015, 02:45 AM

I have been mulling over how the player character is alive before the Great War, and emerges from the Vault 200 years later in the Boston Wasteland. Well, we know from playing FO3 that Boston is the home of The Institute (MIT I am sure). Those of us who have visited Rivet City's Science Lab know that The Institute had an android go rogue, and even go so far as to do a mind-wipe on himself, so that in the end he didn't even know he was a robot.

So 200+ year old character. The player character being an android would explain that. Either because the character's mind was downloaded into a synthetic body in the vault, or perhaps the character was a synth to begin with. Given what we have seen in FO3, they might well not even know they are an android.

Of course this is probably too cool for Bethesda to do. So I am guessing they go the suspended animation route to explain the character still being alive after 200 years.

They've always dabbled in Cryogenics, that is my guess for how the 200 year time slip happens. I'm still betting that you leave the vault and search for your baby, lol.

This was something McWife was wondering...Why make such a thing about the wife and baby (who they've managed to get to look like a cross between the male and female that you create) if they're then going to ignore them after the first half-hour or however long the initial crawl is?...

I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes, but I think I'm going to wait to play it until the initial kinks are sorted out...

We'll have the guide book, of course... biggrin.gif ...So I'll be pouring over that for a good while before playing...Much like I was with New Vegas...

I try to read as little as possible about FO3 so it'll feel like a completely unknown game once I try it but it's hard not to get spoiled even when skimming through some threads.

From what I understand, it's more or less confirmed that you've been put to a cryo sleep for 200 years, as a part of a Vault-Tec experiment. I don't know what are the proofs but I've read about it on Beth, I think that even Pete Hines said something about it via Twitter.

One thing that really annoys me about the coming Fallout is the voiced protagonist. wacko.gif If there's something I hate, it's to play with a forced voice. When a mod that disables voice actor, gets released, I'll be the first to download it.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 2 2015, 07:42 PM

The voiced protagonist concerns me too. A voice is nice if you like it. But the game is unbearable if you don't. I use custom voice mods for Oblivion and Skyrim, and they help make my characters come alive. When I can can find the voice to suit the character. But when I tried to play Molly Hatchet in Skyrim I couldn't get the right voice for her, and it made it difficult to play her.

If they have someone like Laura Bailey do the female PC that would probably be fine with me. But it is only a matter of time before that one voice is not going to fit one of my characters. Hopefully there will be alternate voice mods out by that time. Or a disabler like you mentioned (It should not be really difficult. Just record a second of silence, and use it to replace every voice file of the player character).

They also claim that they have a zillion different names recorded, so you will be able to hear your character's name spoken in the game. But I bet not a single one of the names I will use will be on that list.

Posted by: hazmick Aug 2 2015, 10:58 PM

I agree with the point about voiced characters. My accent only seems to be used for peasants and other unimportant NPCs in most games, if it's heard at all.

Seems the male character in FO4 is going to have that stock 'American Hero' voice that the protagonist of every action game ever uses. Hopefully the female character voice will be good.

The name thing is quite fun though. The original Stronghold game had that feature back in 2001. Very nice touch.

I'm the same way on voices. The wrong voice can get on my nerves, too. But HOPEFULLY it will be easy enough to change out voice files to one you do like.

(I say "Hopefully" so carefully because of the stuff pulled on modding voices in Skyrim). If they do that to us again, I have the converter for Skyrim voice files and a bunch of spare female voice files warming up in the pan, lol.

But they might do it like they did ESO - where each race has its own set of 8 different female and male voices; and you get to listen to all their phrases and sounds in the gen when you are creating the character - choose which one you want.

I hope they do, because there are some of those voices they had sets of that I really wouldn't want to be stuck with on my character; in fact - in each set I only found 1-2 of the 8 voices that I could stand hearing over a whole game. So the odds are against them finding something I'll like too.

(but since FO4 will be modable, I'll be able to fix it if they don't choose well, lol).

There is one female guard in ESO that I would love to have voice files on, and never get sick of hearing it. Unfortunately, no way to find out whose voice that was to hunt down voice files for her, verysad.gif

I think voiced PCs only work when they have actual conversations with NPCs such as in the original Deus Ex.

*re-install detected*

Posted by: McBadgere Aug 4 2015, 01:00 PM

From what I remember of all the interviews at E3...There is one voice for the male and one for the female...Sadly I can't find the interview we watched on Youtube with all the cast on stage...But it's one voice for all males and one for laydeez...

I'm ambivalent (Is that the right word?...I think it is, as in, I don't really care at all) about the voice thing...I would like to imagine their own voice - or actor from whatever show I deem him to be - but at the same time, if you're given specific things to say, it may as well be said with an animation...*Shrug*...Each to their own and all that though...

More news from Gamescom - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J0oh6-kAGk

The major points here seem to be that combat has improved, so you don't have to rely on V.A.T.S as much, and big battles feel bigger.

Perks also seem to be an even bigger part of the game, and I've heard (but can't confirm) that there'll be no skills in the game. Not sure I like the sound of that.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 6 2015, 03:02 PM

The skills are there. Look at 33 seconds in. They are exactly the same as in FO3, including tagging three of them. The guy talking about it calls them perks by mistake.

Ah, the voice thing. The thing that concerns me is what this means for the future of the Elder Scrolls. Bethesda has shown a tendency to incorporate the successful (read popular) ideas in the Fallout games into their 'main' series and vice versa. I don't think it's an accident that the deathclaws look like Godzilla… dragons were very popular in Skyrim after all.

The idea of bringing in twenty different voice actors for the different races and genders in Tamriel seems cost prohibitive, but I have no doubt that the voiced Fallout 4 protagonist is going to be a huge hit… no matter what the voice sounds like. So it looks like we're all going to have to brace ourselves for the 'American Hero' voice that drives hazmick crazy laugh.gif

I think we already had our example of the mail and female voices in the face gen screen part of E3's announcement. Todd indicates you have to create both the male and female; and the baby is created off those looks. The last one on screen when you exit the Char Gen is the character you will be playing (male or female) - So I think these are the voices you will have to get used to:

(I think the echo chamber effect is being done by the E3 mikes; I certainly hope they don't have that on throughout the game - that would be really irritating).

No hardcore mode! Why? That is one of the things that has gone over huge with Bethesda's fans; why toss it? And I agree with Mirocu on the non-degradation of armor and weapons, that is boooooorrrrriiiiiiing.

Grrrrrrr.

I have taken one step forward in my quest not to be a Bethesda sheep (just mindlessly buying their games like I'm hypnotized) = by (and since) cancelling my prepaid order.

Cancelling the order was a biggie for me, I have pre-paid/pre-ordered every RPG game Bethesda has made since (and including) Oblivion. But truthfully, when I cancelled the pre-order; I actually still originally planned to go to the shop on release day or order it from Steam two days earlier than release date.

Well, I don't plan to anymore; but instead have decided to wait to see what I hear about the game after it is released. If it lacks decent questlines/is a modding nightmare/or is another Todd Howard fiasco of power-mad control over my roleplay - I might just save myself the Septims bottlecaps gold money this time.

My son and I were wondering if they are going to have us Player's experience the initial drop of bombs and having to get into the vault (111).

QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 4 2015, 10:18 AM) *

I don't know, nothing has been said yet - but I'd almost bet that it will be through Steam, because they are hand in pocket with them on everything now. Steam has a long term contract with them that is extremely beneficial to Bethesda.

Check = Right.

QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 15 2015, 09:12 AM) *

Check = Right again.

Posted by: Kiln Nov 13 2015, 07:37 AM

Well I have to say, the depth and variety of Fallout 4 has made up for it's shortcomings.

I was skeptical at first and still a bit disappointed about some design choices but building your own community, modding the absolute crap out of the weapons/armor, modular power armor, and overall polish of the game have outweighed the changes.

So far, I've dumped 20+ hours into it and I'm just getting started. The skill system has been completely replaced by a revamped SPECIAL system that is simplified at first glance but really has quite a bit of depth once you realize that each stat opens up a plethora of options beneath it with several ranks per perk. In short, it is different but it still very much feels like Fallout and plays very well with a huge world to explore and difficult choices ahead.
