Chorrol.com _ Fan Fiction _ The Chorrol Community Contest 2013
Posted by: Colonel Mustard Feb 13 2013, 12:25 AM
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen of the Chorrol forums!
This the official thread for the Chorrol 1Q 2013 writing contest (because there might be more later. I don't know). That is right, a contest; a competitive scene pitting you writers against one another in a blood-soaked battle to the death that won't actually have any blood in it and if there is any death it's almost certainly unrelated to the contest itself.
The winner will receive nothing more than bragging rights, but this is an excellent opportunity to push your writing skills above and beyond their usual level and earn yourself some nice, lovely forum kudos. Maybe you'll get a badge or something, I don't know.
How it will work
In order to make the competition as fair as possible, all entries will be posted up anonymously; to enter, you PM your entry to me. Once the deadline is reached, as the official* competition judge I will read and evaluate every story and from there create a shortlist (there will be either five finalists, or ten if the volume exceeds thirty). I shall then post up the shortlisted entries, either on this thread or on a new one, and then will follow a one week voting period where people will PM with their vote on who they think should be winner. In the event of a tie, the tied entries will go to a second round of voting. From there, our victor shall be picked.
*Okay, it's not official, but I've got mALX, Elizabeth Hollow and King of Beast's votes. Do you?
Vitalstatistix
In order to give writers something to work with, a common thread to tie the competition together and to discourage people simply being lazy by dusting off an old work of theirs, the competition is centred around the theme of Absolution.
In order to make reading things managable within a reasonable timeframe, the wordcount for entries is going to be 3000-7000 words
The final deadline for entries is Midnight GMT, Friday 15th March 2013. An entry can be sent to me at any time between now and then.
Rules
1. All entries cannot have appeared on this forum before, and must only be sent to me via PM, with the wordcount included in your entry. Any entries that have been posted on the forum or anywhere else before will be disqualified. Any entries that I find are just an 'Elder-Scrolled-up' version of existing stories will also be disqualified.
2. In order to make the number of entries being read managable, there is a limit of one entry per person. The first entry you make will be the only entry considered, and all others will be disregarded.
3. To make sure that all voters and readers are able to appreciate every entry to the fullest, and to make the competition as fair as possible, entries are to be set in the Elder Scrolls universe only. Works of original fiction, or set in other intellectual properties such as the Fallout or Mass Effect universe will not be considered.
4. Stories that are either above or below the wordcount or sent after the deadline will be disqualified.
Any questions or queries about the contest can be posted up on this thread here, I'll try and answer them as quickly as possible.
Also, while I'm here, I have an offer for you all. As part of my position as not-so-official official judge, I'm going to be making thorough notes and collations of my thoughts on entries in order to help me work out the shortlist. If you want to hear the thought of somebody who's only real qualification for this role is a few book reviews, a job as an advance reader for a publisher and an English A-Level on how good your story is, just add that in to your PM and I'll send you what I've put down. I will be in full-on dickhead book critic mode, mind, so don't start crying about me being mean about your story if I'm harsh towards it. It's nothing personal; I'm going to be like that with every entry unless it's up there with Shakespeare.
Now go! Write, my pretties! WRITE!!

When you post the stories up, are you going to set up voting through or on the page itself so we can all excitedly watch the tallies progressing on here while waiting for the winner to be announced?

I had no clue what it meant either so I googled it:
Absolution:
1. Formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment
2. An ecclesiastical declaration of forgiveness of sins
Synonyms:
Pardon; forgiveness; acquittal; remission

Hemingway was a known partier and was actually quite wild in his private life. (IE his "Venis (with a P) Fly Trap" he wore to costume parties. (According to people in Key West that knew him).

None. Nobody entered. At all. You could send me 3000 words of gobbledygook and you'd probably win through default right now.

Okaaay. Perhaps we could put the deadline back a bit, to give everyone who forgot time to submit one?
And also perhaps have people who are planning on entering one, say so here - then they can be mercilessly mocked if they fail to do so
Nothing like a combination of guilt and fear of public humiliation to beat a deadline...

Yep

It could be that people were just waiting until the very last minute before submitting? In which case - great! I was just afraid after the previous posts, that people had forgotten completely about it (and I felt guilty, as I'd pinned the topic thinking that was a good thing - but I suspect that if it had remained where it had been with normal updates, people might have paid more notice to it).

I don't think that hurt anything Burnt, I think we're supposed to PM them to Mustard so the submissions are kept anonymous. (then he posts them).
Once the voting starts maybe it should be in the regular forum so it stays in sight though.

I'll wait until midnight tonight before I make any moves in regard to the deadline, but if the current number of entries I've received stays the same (that is, zilch), we're going to have to move it forward.
tbh, Burnt Sierra, I've got a feeling that once we'd got the initial Q&A posting out of the way, the thread would have dropped down to the bottom of the board in any case.

Now go! Write, my pretties! WRITE!!
I just saw this part of the rules page - is it too late to ask for the notes?

I have received a grand total of two entries. Not gonna mince words; we want a better contest, we need. The deadline's going forward to 12am GMT, March 30th so that we might have some more entries. The people who've entered won't be affected and your entries will still be valid, but it gives some other people time to catch up.
mALX, I'll get the notes to you in the next couple of days.

Right, so I'm guessing that means I can go back and remove all the vodka related mistakes I made then? Of which I've spotten an alarming number...
ie, we can resubmit before that date, and the entry you've previously received isn't binding?

Two years ago! Liz, you can't even begin to imagine how good a writer he is by the RP, you have to look up his stories - they are under his other profile.
I wished every one of them I read was longer, or that he put out more shorts - either way.

But like I said, this contest would probably wake the writer inside of me! Lets go then! Lets write some fun!

Two years ago! Liz, you can't even begin to imagine how good a writer he is by the RP, you have to look up his stories - they are under his other profile.
I wished every one of them I read was longer, or that he put out more shorts - either way.

That's fine by me, yeah. Kind of kneecaps the anonymous side of the competition for your entry, but if that's what you want to write then go for it.

Apologies for the double post, but an idea has occurred to me for a more regular contest after this; Read in a Rush.
The premise is simple; a monthly contest to write stories of a length between 850 and 1150 words, based on a new theme each month. The actual contest window is open for the first three weeks or so of the month, with people posting up their stories on a contest thread and providing feedback and comments on other people's stories at the same time along with their stories.
In the last week, the contest window closes, and a voting thread is opened; people vote for which story they think should win that month's Read in a Rush contest, a new theme is decided upon (there could well be a running thread for theme suggestions) and the same thing is done the next month with the new theme.
Your thoughts?

Great idea !!! Or one contest per quarter (every three months) with a different subject each quarter.

DE, I don't think you can post it till the contest is over, or it be attached to any posted stories till the competition is over. After that you can do what you want with it. (So don't use a known character from one of your existing stories either. You can always Edit/Find/Replace the name after the contest is over).
It's supposed to be anonymous for voting, you can't even tell friends which story is yours till it closes and Mustard posts the results showing who wrote what story.

Technically, using a known character is perfectly within the rules; so long as the text itself hasn't been posted up here on the site before, then it's legal. As I said, though, it's probably best for the sake of complete fairness not to use character you've used before, as it does kind of make you shoot yourself in the foot by de-anonymising the entry and thus meaning it'll be judged less impartially.

BUT this last idea....is good! Than you can choose to write any month you like...I mean thare is a RL out there and everyone has their schedule...
But I still don't get where the entries end up! A long time ago when we had a competition the entries were posted in a secret thread....just those who arranged it and the judges could see them.
So where to send an entry?

Sounds great. I like the frequency of a contest every month. That way missing a posting opportunity does not amount to a tragedy, as there will be another theme coming up soon. The short entry length would encourage me to tighten up my writing and get to the point.

Also if folks are writing short pieces it’s much easier to keep up with reading them. And finally the Rush nature of the contest encourages writing RIGHT NOW rather than waiting for the stars, planets, and moons to align, and that encourages the habit of writing every day. I don’t know about everyone else, but I find it’s much easier to re-write something I’m not happy with than it is to try to spit it out perfectly the first time. So that's also something I'm personally working on.
So that’s a big yes from me.
Question: would we stick with a TES setting?
Posted by: Colonel Mustard Mar 23 2013, 06:01 PM
Holy crap, Minque is back!

In answer to your question, Minque, the entries to this current competition will go into my PM inbox and then I'll post them up with my account, keeping the authors anonymous until the voting window has closed and I can do the big reveal of the authors.
For the Read in a Rush contest, all I'd do is post up the themeed contest thread (say, there's the theme of 'Hunger') and then people can enter their short pieces just by posting them on the thread, so if you want to enter a piece, you just write it up and stick it on there. Then, when we get to voting, we set up a voting thread, and people just saying something along the lines of "I vote for Colonel Mustard's Story, 'The Splendiferous Adventures of Doctor Fandangotache'", the votes are tallied up once the deadline window is hit and the winner is declared to much pomp, ceremony and pomperous ceremobilia and I don't know why I'm suddenly using so many fake words.
Grits: I personally wouldn't be averse to using worlds beyond the TES-verse or have problems with people writing original fiction. It may, however, leave some entries at a disadvantage with people having trouble contextualising them propery, but provided that they're well-written enough to stand on their own merits I don't think that'll necessarily be too big an issue.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to write The Splendiferous Adventures of Doctor Fandagotache.

The deadline is Midnight GMT on Saturday 30th March. That's 14 hours from now.
Also, for the love of god people, please pay attention to the bit in the rules where it says the minimum wordcount is 3000 words.* I've had to discard 3 entries so far because they're below it. And considering that I've receved a grand total 7, that means that almost half of them have had to be thrown on the scrap heap.
*This means your entry must be more than 3000 words, as apparently this concept is difficult for a good number of people to grasp.

If it's under the wordcount, can't we just let that slide? Otherwise as you say, 3 people who've worked like crazy yesterday trying to do this, will not have their's accepted, and that sucks. Community contest, friendly, love everyone etc etc.
I'd let them in, but that's my personal opinion. If anyone who's entered feels strongly against that, well, fair enough, but if everyone's ok with it what's the harm? The aim of this was to get everyone writing around a common theme wasn't it?
Posted by: Colonel Mustard Mar 30 2013, 11:25 AM
It was stated in the rules, clearly and unambiguosly that the minimum wordcount is 3000 words. Seriously, that's easy to see. That's super-duper easy to see unless you are visually impaired or struggle to read English. Were there members of the forum who were visually impaired or struggling to read English, I would have been happy to accomodate them, but as there appear to be none, then it's just people not paying attention. After having not paid attention to the 4-week deadline I gave them, I then extended the deadline by another two weeks. That is two weeks to write 3000 words. That is not difficult.
The fact that, after having a total of six weeks to write 3000 words, they have not written 3000 words, just means I am annoyed. This is supposed to be a challenge, and it's not challenging if I simply keep moving the goalposts to accomodate all of the contestants.

Well apparently I read something wrong when checking the post-length before I sent my entry to you, so unless something went wrong when you were counting, go ahead, disqualify me.

You have till Midnight tonight mate, so if it is under, you have time to fix it.
Posted by: Grits Mar 30 2013, 12:08 PM
I’m sure the time confusion is all my fault. I took midnight March 30 to mean 12:00 a.m. March 30, and I was asking if that was the deadline.
But that’s good news I think, the deadline is tonight! That means another day for folks to work if they want rather than being disqualified, no extension necessary.

Wait, why were so many scrambling like crazy on the last day to write it? Kobby was out of the country for ten days and then very ill, but I thought he was the only one who wasn't here.
Come on, Kobby you can do it! Anyone that can post hundreds of comments all over the boards daily can easily plop a few more words on their story!

If you do it in a word doc it counts the words for you, Kobby. And something like that you should always click that "Send copy to my sent folder" before sending it to Mustard. Did you PM Mustard and ask him to send it back to you? Copy/paste it on a word doc and look under "Tools/Word Count" to see how much you need to add/how short it is of the 3,000 words. You can do this Kobby, I've got faith in you!

Okay, deadline is close as you've all already gathered. Gimme a few days to collate a shortlist (I've been hit by a sudden inundation of Extended Family so don't have much internet time an am knackered out by small children) and then the voting will start.
Gimme a whiskey on the rocks.
Good luck with the "dealing with small children" bit. Just out of curiousity, how many stories were entered in the end?

I think about seven. I'm counting so good* at the minute.
*NOT counting so good. See what I mean?

Ok, if anyone saw the posts that were here, I apologise and please ignore. I'm babysitting tonight, and whilst I was making a call upstairs, the NIGHTMARE child I'm watching discovered the account I made for April Fools about 5 years ago.
Apparently Firefox has saved all my passwords.
The little pain is still smirking at me too, it was funny apparently...

She sounds perfectly full of life and fun, and I agree with Treydoggie - let her set up her own account and join us here! We'll all be nice to her, promise!

Absolutely, lol. My teen son has nipped my new gaming laptop, moved it into his room and laid out traps to keep me from entering and getting it back, lol.

Eek! Any chance we can make them all the same font and size? Two of them are quite hard to read atm...
I could do it if you want, but I don't want to edit your posts without permission...
Ooh, and YAY!

Doesn't this site have a "Poll" taker thing for voting?
Posted by: treydog Apr 4 2013, 09:21 PM
Woo HOOOO! Many thanks Colonel! Off to read.
Posted by: Colonel Mustard Apr 4 2013, 09:24 PM
You're welcome, everyone.
mALX: I thought about a poll, but it's too easily abused, while the PM system is much harder to.
Also, before anyone asks, you can't vote for your own stories. That's just silly.
Posted by: Colonel Mustard Apr 4 2013, 09:26 PM
The first vote's in! Excitiiiiiiing!

I read five, giving my eyes a break before reading the 6th.

Has anyone been trying to guess the identities of the writers? I am pretty sure I recognize Burnt's and Uleni's writing styles, and am torn between two as being Grits or Liz - this is exciting !!!

Two years since I've written anything and you still recognize my flair! You be scary, mALX

But yeah, I recognize some of the writing styles here and I'm scribbling names. Like you, I'm pretty dubious as to which is Liz's and Grits', but I'm ready to take bets!

Oh, crapola...
Read them all. Ended up having to score them to figure this out. I now have three stories on the SAME score tied for my first choice...
Will now have to re-read them all tomorrow to narrow it further. What a hardship
Terrific job everyone!
