QUOTE(Grits @ Jan 10 2011, 06:07 AM) So I agreed to look after the science lab’s pet snake over the school break.
“This is going to be great! You’re going to love Flakey,” says Child 1.
“Flakey, that’s a nice name. What does she eat? Meal worms, crickets?” I say.
“Mice. Two every week.”
“Oh.” I’m thinking of Child 2, the rodent lover. “Do they squeak much on the way down?”
“No, because they’re frozen.”
“Micicles! Ha ha, that’s great. Phew.”
“She likes her food to be warm, so you have to microwave them.”
“Micro…what?” This is not good. I’m thinking there is no way to back out now without looking like a big baby. The science teacher is super cute, so this is not an option. I decide I will microwave the mice, throw out the microwave, then possibly burn down the kitchen depending on what microwaved mice smell like. “OK.”
“Ha ha! I was just kidding about the microwave. I just wanted to see if you’d do it.”
The things we suffer at the hands of loved ones.
...did you actually microwave it?

I don't know if I mentioned the terrible, awful, miserable cold I had a couple of weeks age, but I lived. Last week Mr. Grits began coughing and sniffling. Since I am such a loving, supportive wife I have concealed my accusations of histrionics and being a big baby as sympathy that his "man-cold" was far more severe than anything I had to suffer. Today Mr. Grits sought medical attention after receiving an email from the man in the next office that read simply, "GO HOME." He returned to the house feverish and triumphant, bearing a diagnosis of bronchitis, sinus infection, and pneumonia. He got his meds on the way home, removing that task as an option for my redemption. Selfish! Also I can't even think of a way to point out that it's only a little bit of pneumonia without sounding churlish. Sigh.

Men! Why, I suffered bronchitis for months before finally recovering - without antibiotics, I may add. I'm of the school - if you can't prove bacterial infection, you don't need antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics for minor things like sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, ad nauseam has led to the emergence of nasty bugs like drug resistant strep/staph, likewise TB and other horrid things. *Getting off yet another soapbox* But a fever? Honestly, if you have a fever, you don't need to go to work, you need to go to the doctor! Can you tell that I'm suffering bronchitis after a cold two weeks ago? Yep. When I get colds, they move to my lungs and stay there. I went to my doctor once about that darn cough, and that's what she said it was. So I'm drinking a lot of bronchodilators to help with the cough (black tea contains natural bronchodilators), and I'm slowly getting better.

I’m with you on the overuse of antibiotics. Sinus infections make me mean, but I generally can get over them. Another gem from today was his announcement that he had 22 hours to get better before he got on the plane. Um, no. There is not going to be a plane. I hope your recovery is sudden and complete! (Get lots of rest.) Sorry, I had to say that!

Urgh, that brings me back to middle school when I was practically asthmatic. Almost any form of physical exertion let me to fits of coughing, and I mean REALLY bad. It was horrible, especially during PE. Ended up taking three kinds of medicine for it, including one purple cough syrup that made me want to vomit, it tasted so horrible. Thank god it went away... I really don't want to think about what life would be like for me if it ended up being permanent. EDIT: Wow, kidney failure... ouch. Hope you get well soon, mALX. Things won't be the same here without you're delightful personality! This post has been edited by Thomas Kaira: Jan 21 2011, 12:12 PM
