How can you tell if your shoulder is dislocated?

I dislocated my knee once. It is a whole new world of pain. I could see my leg was pointed in a completely different direction than normal (sideways). It was too far to crawl to the phone, and I could not have stood the pain long enough until an ambulance arrived anyhow. So I popped it back in place myself. My knee has never been the same since.
