Our red-shouldered hawks have also been busy. Today we saw one rip a small branch off of a pine tree. It had a pinecone on it! Then s/he dropped it in the middle of the yard while flying toward the nest. I guess it was as heavy as it looked.

Hehe. We always think of critters as "knowing what they are doing" (despite watching our dogs, cats- and children and spouses).

When I used to live on the lake- I was out in the canoe with a friend and we were watching a Great Blue Heron (a juvenile) and I had JUST commented on "how graceful" it was when it tried to light on a dead tree limb- which cracked and dumped the bird into the water.

Note to self, do not cross King Of Beasts.
