Saw the new Fright Night, with Colin Farell. It was really good. I enjoyed it more than the original. I liked how it stayed close enough to the original so that you could see it was the same basic story, but added new twists and entirely new things to keep it fresh as well. The cameo by Chris Sarandon was a wonderful surprise, and of course I loved David Tenant and his new version of Peter Vincent. QUOTE(McBadgere @ May 16 2013, 04:39 PM) Oooooh with the jumping down the big hole and the Whitestar crashing thing!!...*Sighs wistfully*...
Ooooh Lorien!!...I remember all that...Wow...I haven't seen any of that since it was on originally...Damned fine series...
Yep! Today was: "Who are you? Do you have anything worth living for?"

Going to see Star Trek this very morn... Absolutely loved Tennant (and Chekov ) in Fright Night...I loved that bit where he pulled the "Doctor stance" with the nail thingy and then ran away... ... Series 4 of B5 was amazing...I jealous all over again... ... "Do you have anything worth living for?"... " Delenn!"... AWWWWWW!!!... ...

So, back out from Star Trek: Into Darkness, and I gotta say, this is a spectacle.
No, seriously, there's a part with Klingons that makes you realize they really are a bunch of Bad@$$es when not being used as rag dolls for showing the apparent strength of the villain of the week. AKA, the Worf Effect is nowhere to be seen.
They turn up the visuals from last time (Warp looks like what a physicist would suspect it to look like, with better Blue-Shift effects due to relativistic physics) and the action sequences are less dopey, but the story still leaves something to be desired and the whole idea of a plot arc is really more like a plot-placeholder with a slight rise in the middle. It's a spectacle, not a film, and I won't be surprised if Tony Stark and Pepper Potts find a way to hold on to the top spot or simply reclaim it next week in ticket sales.
Which brings me to this. Spoilers Ahead!
No, seriously, it is Spoilerish content, and whether you click on the spoilers is inherently tied to how much you like J.J. Abrams doing his "it's a mystery" thing to get away with Guar-Dung level writing.

Yeah, that is one that can wait for dvd, or instant viewing on Netflix. The Star Trek reboot has not really impressed me. As you said, they are spectacles, with lots of pretty lights and funny one-liners. But there is not much substance to them. Pretty much whenever I see JJ Abrams' name on something now I take it as a sign I should find something else to watch.

QUOTE(Grits @ May 19 2013, 08:07 AM) Went to see Star Trek, and Im in complete agreement with Hammer. My friends still had most of the popcorn in their bucket when I said, Wait! Ive seen this one before.
But I still enjoyed it tremendously. I like to spend some time in the dark digesting my Cali-style veggie burrito with a draft Yuengling at my elbow and Mr. Grits rolling his eyes at the movie. (He did not enjoy it.) It was very pretty, very nostalgic, and I could even forgive that the space explosions were noisy. Ill certainly go see the next one in the theater. (Maybe someone will even write a story for it. That would be great!)
Say it Grits. You know you want to. The voice of Cumby demands it.

As someone who grew up watching the original Star Trek repeats and then the Next Generation, simply because others in the house were Trekkies and there was nothing else on...Um...Where was I going with that?... Ah crap... Um... Saw ST: Into Darkness...We loved it!!... Well, three of us did...The daughter wasn't entirely sold on it...She thought it was okay, but not the best thing she'd seen... I absolutely loved all the references and downright stealing of lines... ... The effects were incredible...Though, as a fan of space hardware, I wasn't so much impressed with the aggressor vessel...Whatever it was called, I remember it wasn't what I thought it might be anyways...Thought they missed an opportunity there, but that's just me... ... I'm quite happy to say that this is the best ST film since the original Wrath of Khan... ... Nah, I'm actually happy to say that this is absolutely my fave Star Trek film of them all... This reboot has been a blast for me... Well looking forward to seeing what he does J.J. does with Star Wars...

Well, today we went to see Epic...Which wasn't really...It was alright...But didn't live up to the trailer...Well, the wife loved it and wants to buy anything related to it...Books/Soundtrack/Toys...*Le shrug*... This evening, we watched the original Star Trek II...I fancied watching it...I forced encouraged the kids to sit there watching it with us..."Oh yeah!!" I said, "Gonna be great!!"... Part way through, the boy went and dug out a few Playstation mags to go though...The daughter chose to do some essay for school on poetry and the wife fell asleep... While I love the film, it's definitely showing it's thirty years... Though, the kids were both shocked with the Spock bit at the end...From which I've gotten an "Um, so is Star Trek III better than that?" which I will exploit next weekend... ...

Muhahaha!
Don't worry sir, I'm just old enough to prefer the older films than the new crap they keep slinging out at us.
But, to be honest, I was never really a Trekkie, indeed, Star Wars was my forte. Possibly because it struck me as less of a 'Nerd pr0n' genre, though there is going to be key differences between TV series and movies, to be fair.
Also, Jedis just kick so much more arse, sorry.

Oh aye...Star Wars was my fave too...You'll get no argument from me on that score... But I saw them all (Trek movies) as soon as they were on video 'cause the love of the Trek series was something The Mother and Dad had in common back then...So whichever particular parental property we happened to find ourselves back then, there was a chance one of them would force encourage us to watch them... ... And then, of course was the fact that I've seen all of them since that God-awful one about the entity on "Shangri-La" in the cinema by choice...Well, up until the one with the Romulan Picard...We passed on that one... Indeed, I was once supposed to be seeing ST:IV in the cinema as a date, but the girl got a stomach bug and, as we didn't have multiplexes in them days, the film had swapped before we'd gotten to see it...And no, I can't remember what we saw instead...*Sighs*...Her name was Angela...She was nice... ..
