I remember my dad's funeral. He had been suffering for years, and had even told me months before he was ready to go. He was in constant pain, from when I was about thirteen to September of last year. Nine years of hospital visits, needle pokes, even lost his toe and half his leg. At the end, he wasn't even himself anymore. He just...faded.
It's hard. Really hard. Father's day is going to kill me. My husband and I got married on my dad's birthday because we wanted it to be a happy day. At the funeral, all of the kids, all four of us, even my half brother, making five of us, got up and gave speeches. My mother and stepmom got up, my grandparents, uncle... Even eople who had only known him for a few months. He inspired people like that. The lowering of the casket was...pure pain. Almost as bad as the moment when he passed. I can't write about it any more. That's all I can say without opening up that entire experience again. I know how bad it is to lose someone you love. Someone who made you want to be your best, and who encouraged you to do so. -------------------- |

So this morning has been really nice, with the inevitable heat and humidity more a hint than a promise. My front yard looks especially inviting (because you cant see the mosquitos) with sun-dappled shade at this hour and the grass thick and green (since the drought/hurricane cycle hasnt kicked in yet). And right in the middle there is a rabbit wallowing in the grass.
Ive never seen a rabbit wallow before. Theyre usually frantically nibbling my most expensive plants while they keep a terrified eye out for the hawks, owls, and now EAGLES that nest in our neighborhood. (We have a pair of bald eagles nearby. I am not kidding.) This one was stretched out with its back legs to the side sort of looking around. So I let the little varmint have a peaceful time. Even though he is doubtlessly the evildoer who cropped all of the buds off of my coreopsis two nights ago, even though its supposed to taste bad. While I was writing this it occurred to me that it may have been hit by a car and then dragged itself into the soft grass to expire. I checked. Its gone now. Luckily the first time I saw the eagles I was walking across a parking lot and not driving, or I would have certainly hit something. They were flying along together at tree-top level, the way they do for short distances (if that makes any sense). The Girl was with me, and we said the same thing. “EAGLES!!!” They are enormous.
There are a bunch nesting at a big lake near us (near in eagle terms), so I’m guessing these have moved into the suburbs from that area. I’ve also seen them flying very low along the major road by us, right over the car. They are beyond awesome. Good luck with sleeping next to a nest, KoB. What a racket!!
