Sounds about right. We all should learn to relax in these times of stress. Easier said than done, I know.

Something occurred around my area recently. Last week, I believe. A man was filming the police at some area where there were a bunch. It appears to be a residential area, and as far as I know, filming in a public area is perfectly legal and even protected. What had transpired on a film from another person was quite shocking.

The man being arrested was walking his dog; a Rottweiler, having lived with one, I know that while they have a fearsome reputation, they are actually quite loyal, and genial. The man put the dog in the back of his car, with the windows rolled down, while the cops walked over to arrest/detain him.

The dog didn't like this. Not. One. Bit. He managed to jump out of the window of the car, and then began to aggressively approach the officers arresting his master, while the man tried to tell the dog to calm down. People began to get excited, which only served to aggravate the dog further. An officer drew, shots were fired at the canine.

I don't believe it survived. It's injurious state was replete with heartbreaking howls. I was naturally infuriated at the scene. Though, I know officers have the right to defend themselves.

What happened afterwards was the power of misinformation, and emotional reaction. The incident took place in a town far south of me. About forty or so miles. Somehow, people confused it with the town in which I live. Which in my misinformed state, I believed, as the local cops are known for being overzealous. They will seriously have two or three units roll up for a single jaywalker...

Too further add confusion to the situation, somehow a local art store that I frequent for both my journal and calligraphy supplies, shared the last name of a spokesman for the actual Police Department, and people were calling them nonstop the monday before last with angry rants, and the poor people had no idea what was going on. They also had a pizza delivered, paid for, that no one ordered. Usually meant to intimidate people with a "I know where you live" message.

Point being, I shook my head as I am among the first to say that emotional reactions need to be put in check, and rational responses given precedence. 'Disengage mouth, engage brain.' my Dad would say in frustrated tones as a youthful hellion. I took a lesson well from this incident, however horrendous the scene, whatever the moral debate is, let cooler heads prevail....

A lot of times when management is caught in wrongdoing, the company hushes it up and just forces them to quit quietly/resign. I'll bet anything they caught him doctoring those stats to make it look like he pulled that store out of its slump.

Either way, you are the winner in this situation, you have a better job that appreciates you.

@ Blackie - I hate hearing stories like that. We had one here in TN where a man traveling with his family and pet dog accidently left his wallet on top of his car at the autopay gas pump. Bills were blowing out of it, and he passed a highway patrol at a normal speed.

For some reason these highway patrol decided he must be leaving the scene of a robbery and getting rid of the evidence. The police car-cam video shows the man and his family got out of the car and laid on the ground as ordered, but the police let his dog out of the car. It went and used the bathroom, then as it was returning they shot it (saying it looked aggressive). You can see on the vid the dog was happily smiling and wagging its tail despite the strangers in uniform barking orders at its family - really ridiculous and tragic situation.

Exactly. I feel bad for the assistant though. she went through what I did while they found another manager. But only for a week. Then again, this one is temporary.

I hope things improve at that store for all the friends you made there throughout the years.

@ Everyone = I found out the real truth about Grits's mysterious disappearance the past two weeks. She is not a double agent!

I just happened to be browsing the paper today and saw the "Dear Amy" section - Amy said that after 10 years without a vacation she is taking 2 WEEKS OFF!

Sound familiar? I thought so too!

That storm two weeks ago ripped up some roof tiles that we didn't know about till this steady rain. There is going to be a lot of water damage waiting for it to stop raining to fix the tiles and flash up there - my husband won't climb on it while it is wet even to put a tarp over it (overheard me upping his life insurance policy? Lol).

No seriously, he fell through a roof last September at his job, and I think he is a little iffy about getting up there, especially when it is wet and slick.

I'm just really glad there were no children in school when that happened - that would have been awful.

Sounds like a smart guy. I've done roof work. I would prefer not to work on a wet roof, it gets too slick and dangerous.

I agree, I wouldn't do it either. (but I'm afraid of getting up there even in the dry, lol).

Around here they use a square piece of foam (like the foam pad inside a couch cushion) to work on roofs, they act like velcro and stick to the shingles wherever you drop them so you have a safe place to get on, (even they won't work in the pouring rain though).

Once in a while, I share my hobbies' progress and discoveries. Calligraphy that is. Recently in one of these showing off show and tells, Trey commented upon some unique notebooks he had come across, made from banana paper.Edited to add this direct link. He went on to tell the story of how he found the manufacturer in Central America and ordered a bunch.

So, imagine my surprise when I came across this little beauty in Target, Mrs. Hollow's new employer:

IPB Image

At four dollars, it was worth the try I figured, as stationary is kind of my thing. So I set about to putting it to the written test, literally.

IPB Image

The feel of the paper, as in just holding it, it feels thinner and more delicate than most 'standard' papers, but actually writing on it, as Treydog mentioned gave this nice resistance which was somehow gratifying if your a longhand enthusiast such as we.

But that wasn't enough, oh no. It had to pass the real test. The dip pen test. How does it hold up to steel flexing over it's face and texture?

IPB Image

Quite well, as it turns out.

Despite the feel of the paper being lighter and such, the actual writing makes it feel as though it's much denser, certainly more dense than any other calligraphy-friendly papers I've written on. There is no feathering, no bleeding and the ink does not show through the other side at all. Fibers coming out between the tines occasionally is a problem if your pressing down too hard, but that will happen with any paper as calligraphy does require a light touch, so it serves me as an indication of when I'm doing it right, and when I am not.

So, thank you Ser Trey for the suggestion. I'll definitely be picking up more of these. I may even use them as new journals, as I love the look of the date indicator on top and the slight constrast of ink with the paper's shade.
