Todd Howard talked about this video in an interview with Joystiq. Here is the excerpt:


"We thought it would do well," he said, "but it has gone above and beyond."

One of the surprising effects of that popularity is the many YouTube videos (and "arrow in the knee" references) out there, but Howard says one in particular stood out to Bethesda.

"I think our favorite really is putting the buckets on the heads," he laughed. "It was like day two, and we went, what? Do we fix that? Our lead programmer is pissed and wants to fix it, and I said I'm not sure we should. That's one of those where maybe we leave it in."

In other news, I just learned that the Greybeards vastly overrate their powers. According to them, their voices are so epic that anyone who is not a Greybeard or Dragonborn is obliterated at their awesomeness. So naturally when they held their 'you are Dragonborn and do not die when we yell at you' speech was an important moment.


Turns out they didn't count on Derkeethus the humble miner from Darkwater. Derkeethus who just stood in the center next to his buddy and proceeded to shake off the Greybeard's yapping like it was nothing. There was a very awkward silence at the end.

If your game is unpatched, he "accidently" remains essential. Otherwise, the Greybeards are just braggarts, lol.

Official patches only, so Derkeethus is probably immortal or nearly so. Which is a good thing, considering how often he goes down on his knee.


That said, I doubt the Greybeard's 'attack' does any actual damage. The coders would otherwise have to put in an invisible immunity effect for the player and a separate (non-stagger) version for the Greybeards themselves. That's more work and time for no real reason.

I am glad they kept this in, then.

That's just disgusting...When they're all twitchy legged and stuff before you throw them...Urgh!...

BTW...The wife's recently found them in a cave in Solstheim...She loves them...Made herself about 60 more of the darned* things...

Yeah, I have been there a few times. Gross. I have never made any either.

Oh my gosh, I love those little guys! They have a tough time on the stairs, but they follow you for ages. So sweet. Especially the flame cloak ones. Very nice companion on a snowy road.

Jensa made a whole bunch of them. I was hoping Stenvar would use them, but he hasn't yet. I think it would be hilarious to suddenly have a big orange spider in the middle of a fight. He likes his staves too much to use them I guess. Or maybe like a sane person he doesn't enjoy the company of spiders.

Aravi is going to panic if she gets hit with one.

Admittedly they do look a bit creepy in the hand. They're... leggy. But they look awesome decorating the house.

Something that I noticed a while ago, and not particularly happy either: Kharjo was standing in an oil spill when it was ignited and started to panic. He started yelling for help.

I can take some pictures of my TV later, and here is a link that explains the spider scrolls that you can make. Jensa only has the flame ones. You have to discover recipes, so I didn't look closely at the uesp page. I'm sure it's loaded with spoilers.

These are Awesome, kind of like land mines! I wonder if you are sneaking unseen and toss one nearby an enemy (but not near enough to blow at the time, only if they come closer) - will they notice it right away? These sound extremely Awesome! I already want to play with them and experiment on enemies with them!

I put some pictures in a new thread here. I was going nuts this morning looking for the Skyrim screenshots thread. I don't think we had one!

I've not tried the spider scrolls in stealth, but they run up to the enemy as soon as you're in combat when out on the road. Casting a third with two on the ground makes the first one blow up or disappear.


KC, poor Kharjo. I've never heard that before. Yikes!
