QUOTE
"Be an artist, absolutely. Pursue your dreams, life is rather pointless besides. Just don't be a starving artist. All these romantic stories about artists starving for their art in the slums of Paris, fail to mention these guys had some pretty severe mental problems as well."
"Get a day job, strum your guitar at night. Eat well, because you'll need the energy to perform and walk around when all your money went into the rent you paid to have a roof over your head and you can't take the bus. You might fail to achieve your dream, but you will never regret trying too."
I need to clip this and send it to my son. I've been begging him to get a degree in something marketable, and take the music classes as extra curriculars rather than making it his major. I don't want to squelch his dreams, but want him to have an income that will support the dreams in case they never pan out.
From God, to my Dad, to me, to you, to your son. Do with it as you please.

Dude, Mackelmore is cool and all that. But he's an artist with a Record Deal...he's kinda already successful at getting screwed. Artists don't make crap for their work. I feel bad on the one hand,...but that quote lacks severely in life experience.
And I'm not saying that you, or me, or anyone should
ever betray their dreams.
But, there is a way in which they can and will be achieved. Neglecting basic, everyday needs, is not that path. Sure some people take a gamble here and there, and they have wonderful success stories, but for every one of those, there are 99,999 attempts that fail.
Usually miserably.
In example:
"Kid! You make that guitar sing! I'm going to make you a rockstar! I'll send a car to pick you up tonight! What's your address?"
"The dumpster in the alley between 45th and Wabash. Where the restaurant doesn't lock their trash so I have something to eat every night."
"...."
The real success stories are the ones where people didn't give up.
They wrote a great book and twenty publishers reject them. The twenty first took a chance and BAM! Harry Potter.
