Whenever people say stuff like: "Thank God for modern medicine", I just wanna say "You're going to be satirized in 200 years, y'know."
Some of the modern medicine is overblown to make the almighty dollar. Example: premie babies. In the US at costs that break families so they can't afford food or clothes for the baby if it makes it home.
In Germany the premies don't live in incumbaters, they do it the way it was done before modern medicine: put them in a tiny hammock between the woman's breasts - and I am talking 1.5-2 pound premies. The baby is kept warm by her body, hears her heartbeat, and has access to her breasts if hungry. It costs no more than the birth would have cost full term, and the parents bond better with the baby because they have it at home with them instead of seeing it through a glass and touching it with latex gloves on.
The German premies survive and are stronger and healthier; without all the health issues of the incubated US premies.
