Kiln is wrong! VHS tapes are not heavy and they can have great quality picture, much as DVD can get one tiny scratch and be useless!

Furthermore HD is so vastly overrated and only made up to make guys such as yourselves buy the same Movies again and a new TV when your old is fully functional!

Just have to weigh in on this, the underlined part.

Was this not a notable feature of VHS? That they would wear out if watched too often, forcing you to by the same video again?

I have never had to buy a VHS movie because the old one was worn from watching it frequently It´s so much easier to destroy a DVD by accidently making a small scratch!

I have watched my Jurassic Park tape so many times it´d make your head spin, and it´s still as good as it was when it was new

Funny, I've had more VHS break than DVD's. In point of fact I can't recall a single disc I've had that became damaged and unusable. I've had a 360 game break like that, but only because my dad inadvertently kicked the 360 while I was playing. And I got it repaired a few days later at Game for the princely sum of I think £3.

But, as they say, your milage may vary*shrugs*

Of course the quality of the tapes varied, but still I´ve never had a tape gone unwatchable. Not a single one!

And I could always skip the commercial in the beginning by pressing fast forward. Try doing that with a DVD

My DVDs let me skip the advertisements for other films by hitting the menu button on the remote. So much more convenient. Can't skip the piracy BS, but that's a small price to pay. Considering they take up less space, don't require a dedicated player if you have any games console from the last few years, and come with many more extras that you didn't get on VHS, the pros outweigh the cons.

At least, they do in my opinion.

Face it, Mirocu, DVDs are superior to VHS; if they weren't, they would have lost out to the VHS through commercial natural selection. Instead, the DVD replaced the VHS. Plenty of attempted innovations have failed because they weren't as good as the current product, weren't bought by consumers and therefore weren't supported by companies because they weren't profitable (see the minidisc, a flop that has been outlived by the CD), but the DVD was an innovation that was better than the current product. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have succeeded.

Wrong. So many products are forced upon us by politicians and companies, not because they are necessarily better but because they want us to spend money.

Did you know that the electric car was a success in the late 1800s? It worked and was very popular amongst drivers. But because they could make more money out of petroleum based engines that´s why we have the cars we have today.
Later on GM made another one and gave them away to famous movie actors and so on in a publicity stunt, and they loved it! Then out of the blue GM took them all back with no explanation and later the cars were destroyed, again with no explanation.

If your logic really was in place the gas powered car would have never seen the light of day.

This is a good point.

It doesn't support the claim that VHS>DVD, but it is a good point.

Look, I´m not saying the DVD isn´t a good thing, I´m just saying the VHS wasn´t as bad as you make it out to be. I prefer the VHS, amongst other things, because of its smooth running even when damaged. And I hate all the crap I can´t bypass no matter how many times I press FF or Menu on a DVD.

With VHS, I was in control.

And I think the minidisc should have survived. Its surface was protected, a CD´s isn´t.

I'll grant you, the anti-piracy spiel they stick on DVDs is annoying, mostly because I know that people who've pirated the DVD don't need to put up with it.

But I've never seen a VHS that can match the amount of content on a special edition DVD.

And also, in physical terms, I can fit two entire series of a program like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or House into the space taken up by a single VHS. That works out at 12 DVDs, so a lot more content in the same space.

In my opinion there's no competition whatsoever. VHS might not have been [censored], but DVD outdoes it in every category, though personal experience may vary.

This argument is basically the only one I can buy regarding the DVD; it´s so much thinner than a VHS tape. If you want a collection on VHS tapes, put up an extra shelf or three!
