The only Aaron Allston books I've read are the Wraith Squadron books, and that was some time ago.

So if it wasn't in one of those, I'd not have seen it.

As he wanted to know everything I guess Munin was a tad more important to him cause without him he can´t keep the knowledge anyway.

And the loss of memory would effectively rob him of himself.

Also consider the hostages to the Vanir, Honir and Mimir, a parallel to the ravens. Honir was only wise when advised by Mimir, who was second to none in wisdom and understanding. Just as the mind is nothing without the memory.
