The whole thing's actually a metaphysical paradox.

Like I said, it fills when it's closed. Up until then the contents exist in potentia, but aren't fully realised until the container is actually capable of containing them. But the paradoical part is that even before the box is finished, the contents are trapped inside it...

It's a whole "work this out and the universe implodes" scenarios.
