Don't tell us it's playing up already! No, until I get a good antivirus I'm afraid to hook it up to the internet since this is the second time I've gotten a virus on this laptop since the new year. This laptop cost half what the PC did, really worried about losing it too. Can anyone recommend a good antivirus software program? I am willing to pay for one if it is good; used to buy Trend Micro but they have gone way downhill. Paid for Norton and got a virus while it was active that they said their product could not remove - won't use them again. Paid for Kapersky - didn't get any virus's, but it was klunky to use. Bought WebRoot - didn't get any virus's, but didn't trust it to protect me. Since then I've been using free antivirus software - AVG (or was it Avast?) (got that virus in January while it was active); Malwarebytes; Ad-Aware; both were expired when I got the virus this time. I'm all ears if anyone wants to recommend a good program. I have in fact gotten pretty good at handling the controls. I´m not a pro by any means but it actually almost feels like second nature now @mALX - I know I´ve said it before; I use the free antivirus from Microsoft called Security Essentials. Maybe not the best program and I trust them as much as the next raven, but I haven´t had any issues. Or maybe that´s just because I´m careful about what sites I visit and what links I click on I rarely go anywhere but here, Nexus, and TESA; plus my Photobucket account and youtube - yet still seem to have all kinds of issues. I think this laptop has a vulnerability somewhere.

Is it the full program Avast or the freeware? I just use their Free Antivirus.

Is it the full program Avast or the freeware? I just use their Free Antivirus. Well, I just learned it may not be a virus. Someone at TESA said they believe it is a hardware issue; either dust causing the laptop to overheat and crash, or just plain old hardware - this laptop is several years old now. And the fan has been running a lot before it crashed both times. Urk. This post has been edited by mALX: Mar 26 2015, 11:15 PM

QUOTE(mirocu @ Mar 26 2015, 06:17 PM) Correct me if I´m wrong, but I have a feeling that laptops are more prone to overheat than a regular puter. Get a proper hightower with 40" screen! You´ll feel like actually being in Cyrodiil when sitting inches away from it! I bought a big PC, but can't get the time to sit at a desk long enough anymore. The laptop goes wherever I am; and could play Skyrim/Fallout3 and NV; Oblivion; Morrowind; and carry all my mods around with me too - can't beat that. I spend 99% of my time online on the laptop.

QUOTE(mirocu @ Mar 27 2015, 03:32 AM) D’aww! Since I have to stand up at the computer anyway I use an inexpensive folding laptop stand with a fan in it, like this one. Otherwise my laptop would shut down very quickly if I tried to play a game on it.

QUOTE(mirocu @ Mar 27 2015, 03:32 AM) Aw, you went and got yourself a kitten !!! QUOTE(Grits @ Mar 27 2015, 07:14 AM) QUOTE(mirocu @ Mar 27 2015, 03:32 AM) D’aww! Since I have to stand up at the computer anyway I use an inexpensive folding laptop stand with a fan in it, like this one. Otherwise my laptop would shut down very quickly if I tried to play a game on it. I'm seriously thinking about getting a cooling pad for mine. I took SubRosa's advice and got Avast. My son had put MalwareBytes on the laptop before all this trouble started - well, I just noticed last night that MalwareBytes was using 71,000 kb of RAM while idling !!!!! And I was NOT on the internet! Well, I quickly got on the internet and researched it, and it seems all of the software is using that much these days (I guess because all the PC's have gone up to 16 gig RAM). - Well, my laptop doesn't have that much ram and MalwareBytes was killing it. Mirocu - yours was running at 50,000 kb. The two Antivirus programs that didn't jump on the "If they got it, let's use it up" bandwagon = Webroot and Avast. Of the two Avast's free software had a higher rating than Webroot's fee based software. So I uninstalled MalwareBytes and downloaded Avast. My laptop is running better today than it has in weeks. Thank you all for your help and great advice - VERY appreciated !!!
