mALX, I believe a large part of why this part of Europe is so pristine is because of the communist regime - it had such a major impact on the area's economics that developers never moved in as they have here and in England. Lopov will correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that rural Romania is also extremely beautiful because of the lack of economic development (read industrial development) in much of the country.

Lopov, I had to chuckle at the comment that a tourist can be recognized by the map she is holding! Remind me to load up the maps on my iPhone should I come to visit the area! OTOH, may be better to be recognized as a tourist, else people might start asking me for directions!

Automobiles cause pollution too, and the number of automobiles per the square mileage of the US is much higher.

Here is where I lived in Germany, Schleid - also beautiful and much cleaner than the US - but not as clean as Lopov's town.

Whatever the reason for the lack of pollution or abundance of clean air and homes - Maribor is gorgeous!

No recent photo of myself exists, except the one on my driver's license. Even it is nearly four years old. I will, however, provide a few shots of myself from long ago, when I wasn't quite so decrepit.

I should point out that my forum avatar is a crude self portrait of my myself drawn in 1975 when I was 24 years old. I drew three such portraits separated by at least a year. The first is lost. This is the last. My mum called it 'the mad musician.'
