I hear all of our computers are under siege. The Windows 10 lay waste to our perfectly running game machines, and there is little to do to stop it! sad.gif

Well, I've got my laptop set to only look for updates, but not download them. But I've not even got the little popup thing they put out, which probably means I should really be considering getting some of the updates...

I just had a look through the important and optional updates, and there's nothing listed over 100MB, so it looks like I should be pretty safe. Worst case scenario I get the Windows 10 popup.

But from that article you linked to in the computer thread it looks like they list it as recommended, not important, and I only bother with the important updates, outside of drivers.

If you browse further they mention that Microsoft may very well change it from recommended to important later, so make sure to always check the file size.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. But I tend to forget about Windows updates for months at a time(my last updates were last august!) but I always check the size of the updates to be downloaded. Fortunately something the size of Windows 10 would have me digging through the list to find out what's caused it.

But still, real ****** tactics from microsoft

THis is a quote from a 'Slashdot' article;
QUOTE
Curious about the various telemetry and personal information being collected by Windows 10, one user installed Windows 10 Enterprise and disabled all of the telemetry and reporting options. Then he configured his router to log all the connections that happened anyway. Even after opting out wherever possible, his firewall captured Windows making around 4,000 connection attempts to 93 different IP addresses during an 8 hour period, with most of those IPs controlled by Microsoft. Even the enterprise version of Windows 10 is checking in with Redmond when you tell it not to — and it's doing so frequently.

Holy *****!

Though I dare say Iīm not surprised. Just checked with the company I usually buy my puters from and they still offer Windows 7. But they have Windows 10 by default, you have to actively choose Windows 7 yourself and it costs more. Not sure if I should buy a new one just in case they suddenly pull it from the shelves and all weīre left with is 10...

It feels like finally heading for the edge of the Microsoft cliff. While I've made sure I have a full (non-OEM) copy of Win7 Pro, a big issue is that all support for it stops on 14 Jan 2020 (extended support already has stopped, but that doesn't matter, the security updates do).

Probably shouldn't get too worked up, though, know several people still running XP quite happily, though I suspect the black hat guys are now ignoring that, it's so old. And there's always Linux (though I have a pile of old and beloved software that demands Windows, including the all-important games...)

I would also still be on XP if that puter hadnīt crashed. Win7 is quite good though and Iīll do my best to get it next time as well! tongue.gif

Yeah, I liked XP too. Completely ignored Vista in favour of it. I wouldn't be at all unhappy if all MS OS development had stopped at that point.

Anyway, buy a separate (legal!) Win7 install disk dead cheap from Ebay. Then just get a Windows 10 box, scrub everything off the hard drive and install Win7 from scratch. OK, agreed, there may be issues finding device drivers, but the Win10 ones, which should be supplied with the PC, will probably work - and once you have a usable installation that gets you online, you can tweak them if they don't quite fit.

I donīt have ebay/PayPal so I used another auction site and just now I bought a version of Linux that looked promising. Iīll keep it as a backup in case I canīt get a Win7 computer. I got it because of the description and because it was dirt cheap! Among the things they promised was I can actually test it out before installing it and I can choose to install it beside Windows instead of replacing it.

I donīt know. I hope it works with the games I play but if it doesnīt, at least I didnīt pay a lot.

If you're going dual-boot Win/Linux, which is a good idea - I already have my netbook set up that way - then you should have no problems with the games. In any case, there is Wine:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Linux

Though it limits you to using Ubuntu, admittedly a good starter. Fine for Oblivion, but I'm not sure it covers everything I'd like to keep.

But come 2020, I'll probably go for a highly locked-down, mostly offline, Win7 partition for old games and legacy software (Steam is an issue, of course) and go with a Linux install for browsing and other potentially insecure uses. Plenty of time to think it through, anyway...

I like that idea - having a Win7 computer that is mostly (if not always) offline and then a Linux computer for webbings. Iīve actually toyed with that idea for some time but never really had a reason to go for it. I might do it later though.

Thanks for the link btw smile.gif

Also has the advantage that you could then *permanently* shut down quite a few Windows (and non-Windows) services for better performance. Of course, you can already do that using Gamebooster, but it would make that load faster for a start (GB can be quite slow to fire up).
