QUOTE(SubRosa @ Jul 15 2016, 05:41 PM) Detroit people are awesome! When they aren't shooting at you, or robbing you! I have never eaten at a single one of them! Though I have had a hotdog from American Coney Island, on Lafayette downtown. I don't think it made Anthony Bourdain's show, but it's a Detroit food landmark. TBH, a lot of classic Detroit restaurants didn't make his list. But then Detroit is a real foodie town. It would be hard to do a spot at them all. I've actually had two Coney dogs - one from the site of the former "Coney Island" in New York; the other on Miami Beach! (I tour the US eating sausages? No, but since they have such a huge reputation just had to have one; and the NY one was when I was a kid with my parents = didn't remember how it tasted, ) Does Detroit have any other particular foods associated with it? Because he did ribs and mac and cheese; and I was kind of disappointed by that. How different can they be from any other city in the US? Comfort food is the same everywhere, I think. There are certain things I eat in certain towns every time I go regardless; kind of a tradition. Example: Every time I go to Miami I have a plate of Black Beans over White Rice with "Platanos" = fried plantains. Every time I go to Maryland I'm having crab; New Orleans = crawdad; Georgia = peaches; Florida = oranges; etc. I mean, I eat other stuff if I'm there a while; but make sure to get one of these "specialty" meals or foods each visit. Oh, okay. Here is a list of what the internet says is the top things to eat while in Detroit: https://www.thrillist.com/eat/detroit/detro...-before-you-dieI've actually eaten some of these in NY or Chicago. Deep dish square pizzas are big here in Detroit. Buddy's and Jets made the list, and they are really good. But there is a little family-owned pizzeria called Holiday Pizza right by my place that makes what I think is the best pizza I have ever eaten. Downtown there are places in Greektown like Pizzapapalis that do a super deep dish, but I have never tried it. When it comes to Corned Beef, there is a little Greek mom and pop restaurant near me called House of Reubens that makes the best Reuben Sandwiches. Because of all the factories around it gets so busy there during lunchtime on weekdays, that I only go there on the weekends. The line is literally out the door. There have also been times that I swear I saw the entire Sterling Heights Police Department in there eating their lunch (they like Holiday Pizza too). Ball Park franks are really nothing to brag about. The best store-bought hot dogs are Koegels. They make them here in Michigan. Best hot dog ever. Buy the Viennas, not the Frankenfurters though. The Hani Sandwiches from National Coney Island are really good as well. But I think their Taco Salad is the best thing on their menu. Instead of simply putting taco beef in the bottom, they put chili! Packzi (pronunced Poo-nch Key) is a Detroit staple. Back in the day Hamtramck was all Polish, and every year on Fat Tuesday the Packzi's come out all over the city. In New Orleans they have Mardi Gras. In Detroit we eat incredibly fattening sugar doughnuts... Pretty much the same with Peirogi, except it doesn't have its own special day. Mexicantown didn't get a mention in that article, and you can get a lot of great Mexican street food there during Cinco De Mayo. My ex Jaelyn lived down there for a while. There is a place called Mexican Village up Van Dyke from me that makes fantastic tacos with deep fried shells. That is another place that is always so busy that I almost never go there. The wait time is over an hour on the weekends. Poutine is on that list, but its not really a Detroit thing. It is more a Canadian thing. Saganaki is a Detroit classic. "Opa!" is what they shout when they light it on fire. It is something you have to eat at least once in your life. It's an experience! TBH, I have never heard of a lot of stuff on that list. What we do have is a lot of really good ethnic foods thanks to local enclaves, like Polish, Greek, and Mexican. What is also not on the list is Tony's. Its off I-75 up past Flint. They aren't known for their good food, but rather for their massive portions. The BLT sandwiches are too big to fit in your mouth. They must have a pound of bacon alone! (and I am not exaggerating!). Nothing screams 'Merica! more than that. This post has been edited by SubRosa: Jul 16 2016, 12:23 AM

Nothing screams 'Merica! more than that. It is a real mixed blessing when you find a restaurant so good that people swarm the place - you know you will have a taste sensation of a lifetime; but the wait makes your ability to even try it an iffy thing. I haven't had Peirogi since I was a kid; my neighbor used to make it and stuff me with them - she is the one that got me into cooking; she was a gourmet. OMG, BLT is about my favorite sandwich (especially here in ETN where you can get Grainger County Tomatoes) - and I have been banned from eating bacon. That description alone of bacon stacked so thick you can't open your mouth wide enough to bite the sandwich could put me into cardiac arrest, I've had the square deep dish in Chicago, but I don't know if it is the same. I think a Greek pizza sounds VERY interesting; as long as it is NOT made with Lamb. Urk. We have a small family owned pizza place (close to where I moved to!) that has the best pizza's I've ever had EVAH; they are always so busy that people stand up to eat or sit in their cars for blocks around there on the lunch hour. I used to eat there once per week when I was working near there - our whole office would get together and go for lunch there; but we had a plan that included calling our order in well in advance and going to lunch early that day before the lunch crowds hit. Opa! Ha, in German that is GrandFather; in South America they shout it when dancing in some areas. I wonder if it is a Greek thing too? This all sounds so good! And now I'm hungry,

I ate a little while ago, and now I'm hungry too! A BLT sounds so good right now... Here's a Tony's BLT'Merica!I like Pierogi. I usually get Dudek Pierogi from the store. Kowalski makes really good ones too, but you have to get them at the Kowalski Deli. Kielbasa and Kapusta is my favorite Polish food. That one I make at home. Kielbasa is my favorite kind of sausage. When I make chili and put sausage in it, I always use Kielbasa. I think it is often the little mom and pop restaurants that are the best. Instead of following a corporate formula, they make the food they love, in their own special way that they probably learned since they were kids. I like Kielbasa too - I stir fry it with onions and mixed veggies and serve it over rice - good stuff. And you can't imagine the tremendous restraint I am showing in not mentioning any jokes regarding this discussion from you and pointing out a certain scene in Teresa Fiction from a long time ago,  I actually put a sentence of dialogue in Maxical's story in tribute to that scene in Teresa's story: Fathis Aren says, "Nae lad, I don't eat sausages." And thinking of Teresa is what made me write that, I remember loving Pierogi so much that my neighbor used to fix it every time I came over just to kind of spoil me. Oddly though; I can't remember what it tasted like anymore. Holy Crap! Yeah, no, that might be a bit TOO much bacon, even for me;

QUOTE(mirocu @ Jul 16 2016, 09:42 AM) Ehm... This is still the Project thread and not the Everything thread, is it? Speaking of projects, today I adjusted the small add-on wall on the garage. Didn´t quite get it right when I did it. Now it´s fine though So much for "looks professional". I even turned up in time to finish the job and true pros never do that Oops, er...well these were food eating projects? No? Okay. *mALX slinks away from thread on belly like a worm...*

QUOTE(mirocu @ Jul 20 2016, 04:17 AM) Not sure when or even if we´re gonna put that door up, but yesterday we got paint on the tractor garage! I was gonna put pixies up but it seems imgur has done a Photobucket now and rendered themselves a pain in my rear to use. I´m suspecting I´m gonna need to change site again, any ideas? I don't know of any but the two you mentioned. Urk.

It's been such fun watching that garage come along step by step. It really has! What an amazing job you all did, and so fast! Glad you guys followed along on the journey Again, not sure what we´ll do with the door. I think we´re gonna ignore it for now and see how it is in the winter. Kinda nice not having a door there actually
