Playing the For Honor closed beta. Having a blast.

They've added 3 new classes since the alpha, so each faction now has a good balance of classes to explore. The Knight's Warden is still my favourite though.

A new feature has also been added, which introduces a persistent global faction war. As you fight in regular multiplayer matches (both PvP and PvAI) you will earn war assets for your faction which can then be assigned to a region of the world map. At the end of every turn (6 hours) the assets of each border region will be tallied and whichever faction has the most assets will claim that region.

It's really cool to see the frontlines shifting as you fight, and trying to figure out where other players might be putting their assets. Each faction has a stronghold on the map, and I'm curious to see what happens if the stronghold falls - I might find out soon since the Samurai are only two regions away from the Knight stronghold.

Perhaps you can tell Khajiit what reason they came up with to throw these factions together?

From a game dev point of view?

Well the combat is the main focus of the game, so the factions (knights, samurai, vikings) were chosen because they represent very different styles of combat. Each faction is also very famous and recognisable. Oh, and they're all really really cool.

From story point of view?

That's not 100% clear yet. Something to do with a massive cataclysmic event that forced everyone to fight for their survival. They haven't showed much of the singleplayer campaign yet.

Yeah Khajiit doesn't care about mechanically. They could've chosen factions that actually belong together for that.

The trailer sort of shows the backstory.

Lol, well, Pirates and Ninja could happen very easily. Pirates in the seas around Japan were quite common after all (perhaps not the traditional European pirates, but even their presence in Asia could be easily explained given European interest in Asian trade/exploitation). Now, Robots are lot trickier, since this one guesses you are talking about robots similar to the droids from Star Wars (especially the cool ones like IG-88, HK-47, or the one from Rogue One), or maybe giant mechs. For these, then there would need to be some kind of time travel, mad scientist steampunk kind of thing (Khajiit thinks this could be an interesting idea!), or some other fantasy/sci fi element. So yeah, still not totally believable (but fun!).

This one isn't trying to ruin people's fun. He just thinks they could've came up with 3 factions that are contemporary to, and would've had contact with each other, so they wouldn't have to make up some cockamamie story to bring them all together. On the other hand, Khajiit knows most of the decision came down to marketability, and Vikings, Knights, and Samurai are one of the Triumvirates of Cool/Popularity.

I'd say they're contemporary, more or less. They're all pretty vague terms, but 'Vikings' were active until at least the late 11th century, Knights are more difficult to pin down but the first crusade was in 1096, and the first use of the Samurai O-yoroi armour was around the time of the Genpei War in the early 1100's.

You're right about marketing though. There aren't many other groups of warriors in history that are as famous/popular/recognisable. There's a manga with a not-too-dissimilar setting, called Drifters. Seems this sort of thing is quite popular nowadays.

I've decided to fire up Banished again.

It's immensely infuriating, because at present it has me waging war on my own uneducated villagers who think that they're qualified to be blacksmith or tailor, even going so far as to take the jobs away from educated villagers! mad.gif

BWAAHAA! I love that game! SubRosa gave it to me, and it is so much fun! So far none of my villages have survived more than 8 winters, lol.

Well, I'm only playing on a small map, and with a medium start, but I'm currently in my ninth year with the town of Vikingford. Because with a name like that, there was no way I was rerolling, even if the terrain wasn't great. Having a pretty mixed game so far. Got a school built right off the bat, thanks to the starting resources, so I don't have to put up with uneducated workers, but I lost one of my original ten to a falling tree soon after. That really hurt.

Things had been going well until about ten minutes ago. I'd just bought some chickens, set up some farmland, and had not long finished my second forest hub when the damn thing caught fire. And I hadn't built a well. Two of the three building were destroyed sad.gif

But at least I've got the spare workers to rebuild. Vikingford will prevail! viking.gif

I'm tempted to try Stardew Valley. My wife bought it for our PS4, and it is now addicted to it.

rollinglaugh.gif That's what foresters get for sleeping on the job!

The town of Vikingford is now done. The adult population's hit 100(about 150 with kids and students), and I've nearly run out of room. My food production hasn't kept up with my population growth, and while I think I've got just enough room left to address that, it's only a temporary measure.

Had a good bit of fun with it though. And some of the trends in the town were endlessly amusing. Like the number of guys in their mid-to-late twenties moving in with 16 year old students laugh.gif

I think I might try a medium size map next time.

BWAAHAA!!! At least yours were breeding, mine wouldn't move out of their parents houses and no one was giving birth, even after they had a schoolroom set up and teacher!

You did have enough houses, right? You won't get any babies until you've got couples living in their own homes.

Yeah, they wouldn't move out even with empty houses! And they were plenty old enough to. I finally got some to move out by making stone houses instead of wood; and two of them finally procreated.

That's odd. I've seen villagers move out as soon as there's an opening, even if it means moving in with a student/child(single parents?), sounds like a glitch to me. I didn't even start building stone houses until fifteen or so in-game years had passed.

It may have been glitched, because out of the total 5 children that ever got produced in my game, only one of them found their way to the schoolroom so the teacher there was being wasted when she could have been gathering.

And the instructions said they would be happier if they had a place to bury their dead, so I built a graveyard - a bunch died every winter, but none ever got buried.

Oh, and I had a big stash of coats for the winter - a bunch froze to death and the coats were never touched!

Maybe my town was a bit slow? Drunk/on drugs or something? I don't know, but it was still a blast to play!
