Just watched Pitch Black for probably the tenth time. Still fantastic. I love how no one is quite what they appear, and no one is perfect.

Yeah good movie! How did you feel about the other Riddick flicks (Khajiit hasn't seen the last one)?

As with most sequels, the other ones don't live up to the original. The second one was a huge departure in feel from Pitch Black. It was a grand space opera action movie, where Pitch Black was more a sci-fi horror movie. The third movie gets more back to the roots of Riddick vs. aliens and bounty hunters. But it too, just doesn't live up to the original.

Khajiit pretty much agrees about Chronicles. Alexa Davalos (Kyra) though... Khajiit could watch her all day!

Actually Kira was one of the things that disappointed me. Jack was an interesting character in Pitch Black. Like everyone else, there was more to him than what you saw on the surface. It is not often mainstream media is willing to have a trans character, and even less often one that is not comic relief or a twisted villain. Jack was a kid who picked the wrong hero to worship, who just happened to be trans, but otherwise was not really any different from anyone else.

Chronicles of Riddick took the low road, and replaced Jack with a generic hot chick. I suspect the hand of the studio there, since every movie has to have at least one hot babe for people to salivate over.

I just saw Logan. It was good. Really dark and rather depressing. I expected the downer ending, so that did not bother me. Definitely better than the other solo Wolverine movies. TBH, I am surprised anyone would do another given how bad the first two were. But I am glad they did, because it is one of the best X movies.

I'm watching the last of the Doctor Who christmas specials with David Tenant as The Doctor.

I absolutely love his goodbye tour, helping out his old friends one last time. And I think that the fact he says so little through that whole section is simply brilliant. They could have spent an entire episode having him say goodbye to everyone, but I don't think the result would have been any better. Or even as good, really. It's easily the best part in my opinion.

Ood Sigma popping up with a choir was a nice touch, though the line they gave him after that was more than a little cheesy.

And David Tenant could not have delivered his final line any better.

Does anyone here remember ever seeing the show Roar starring a young Heath Ledger. Man that show was cool! Pity it didn't last very long.

Sweet Brigit! I liked it a lot! Romans in Ireland, Judas Iscariot, and Heath Ledger. It was a lot of fun. But that one ranger girl's hair was just tragic...

Because I watched Pitch Black, last night I watched Below. It was also directed by David Twohy, and has a delightful Pitch Black homage. It is also a brilliant, understated ghost story taking place aboard a U.S. submarine during WWII. This time out I noted that Darren Aronofsky was one of the writers, which explains the wonderfully twisted story.

I just got back from seeing Wonder Woman. Wow. That was fantastic! It is definitely the best DCEU movie. They have not made anything this good since the first two Christopher Nolan Batman movies.

I just realized something though. You never hear the name Wonder Woman in the movie. Likewise in Batman vs. Superman. She is just Diana Prince. Which is not bad. Names like Wonder Woman or Superman do sound a bit pretentious after all.

Gal Gadot was great. She breathes life into into the character, without falling into the existential doom and gloom of the DCEU Supes and Bats. Which is not to say she is a happy go lucky person. She begins the movie a fish out of water, knowing nothing of the world outside of Themiskyra except childhood stories of gods and heroes. That brings some wonderfully cute comic moments. But also a deeper story of Diana's awakening and learning who she is, and what her place is in the world. Learning what is worth living for, and what is worth fighting for.

Chris Pine stunned me, in that he is not a douche-bag in the movie. Seriously, I have never seen him in a movie where he was a not an ass. Maybe the guy can actually act after all. It was also nice to see Professor Lupin again. The rest of the cast is good, though there is not a whole lot for them to do. The focus here is on Diana and Steve, so they are just sort of there in support. As supporting characters do.

Some of the mythology and history has me scratching my head. It takes place at the very end of WWI, and Ludendorff (a real person) is the big bad (well... you will see). At one time he was the defacto dictator of Germany. But by that time he was out of the picture. Even he had seen that the war was unwinnable, and moved to make peace. But since he was so egotistical he would never make peace himself, and go down in history as the man who surrendered. So instead he pushed for a provisional civilian government to make the peace (and take the blame, creating the 'stab in the back' myth in the process.

And the mythology is a real WTF? Zeus is this wonderful wise man who created humans, Ares corrupted them and killed all the other gods, and Zeus created Amazons to bring peace to the world. Riiiiight. In reality Ares was the father of the Amazon race. It is one of the reasons they were so ferocious. While Zeus never met a woman he did not rape. But it is a comic book movie, so I suppose I should not berate it too much.

All in all it was an excellent movie. I can't wait to see it at home on 4k, so I don't have to miss 5 minutes in the middle when I have to pee.

Watching The Great Wall. The Chinese outfits are gorgeous. But sadly the rest of the film is not.

Lol, that is a movie Khajiit should have been all over, but the trailers really failed to grab him. Perhaps when it comes on streaming services he will check it out.

It's pretty much armor porn. I would love that armor for Skyrim or Oblivion. It is perfect elven armor.

I agree with SubRosa in Wonder Woman. I loved that movie! And I was expecting something akin to Man of Steel or Batman Vs Superman. So far D.C. Had been very dark and gloomy. Suicide Squad was comical but also had its edginess. It might sound strange coming from me but I enjoyed Wonder Woman far more than the other D.C movies.

Modern superheroes tend to be an angsty lot. Like Subrosa said, "Logan" was pretty depressing. Recent heroes brood over their losses, struggle with their personal demons and grapple with their self-worth. Most could use some counseling. Diana in my humble opinion has perhaps the greatest moral clarity of any superhero we've seen on screen aside from Captain America in the last decade.

While her friends and allies talk strategy and plot the most prudent course, Diana is motivated by pure, shining idealism. In the movie the world is racked by the disease of war and conflict, and she will do whatever it takes to thwack that disease at its source. I loved the addition of Aries here even though they shy away from the source material when it comes to Greek gods. Diana sees suffering and yearns to help. She sees injustice and longs to fix it. But what's great is that she isn't a pacifist. Far from it. She knows that one must confront a threat boldly and, at times, with lethal fury.

What I liked about the movie is that she comes into the real world with a certain charming naivety like a child with a clear sense of right and wrong that cuts through all the vagaries of adult life. And while the movie sands away Diana's innocence, it never blunts her sense of truth and justice. Even when she realizes that the human race will never be as good as she'd like it to be, she still sees something in these mere mortals worth loving … and saving.

For example in Man of Steel, Superman questions his destiny and ultimately commits a sin that Superman traditionally would never countenance: killing someone. I liked Steel better than many, but it was still pretty disappointing. Meanwhile, the Batman introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was more than just a grim, brooding superhero: He was a sadistic one, prone to picking up guns and killing his opponents, too. Again, both huge departures for the character. Batman, in his latest incarnation, was hard to root for. Supes was a hard one to care about.

Wonder Woman is a departure from DC's recent template in that she's not really a a grim, edgy departure at all. She stays true to the emotional roots of the character. Moreover, she stands for something: She believes. She inspires. In an entertainment landscape obsessed with flawed heroes, unlikeable heroes and antiheroes, Diana is unapologetically a real hero. Full stop. And to be honest it's refreshing.

Still, it's nice to see the DC extended cinematic universe gain its footing again. And it's all because this movie allows a superhero to be what a superhero is meant to be: an inspiration.

In my humble opinion the Great Wall wasn't, well, that great: it had little development of character and focused more on action than storytelling. But I was glad to see Oberyn Martell in it tongue.gif

And yet I am, and live—like vapours tossed.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod
A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept,
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.”
