I've been re-watching Zemalf's absurdly lucky Let's Play of Xcom: Enemy Within. Makes me want to fire the game up again. And pretty imminently(tomorrow, in all likelihood) I'm gonna start re-watching Babylon 5Sci-fi binge still in full swing, as you can see

You came! Yes, same here - but I'm glad i saw them. It is the only thing that kept me watching through that bizarre/awful Sam montage and the cramming they are doing with this first episode. I hope they aren't going to do that through the final two seasons! ** But that said, the opening scene with Arya - WOOOOOOOOOOOOT !!!!!! This post has been edited by mALX: Jul 18 2017, 05:18 PM

Just finished watching Kong: Skull Island. It was ok. Not fantastic, but not bad either. It is very much an action movie, with tons of giant monster slugfests. It also manages to keep the "little people" interesting, which is always the hardest part of any kaiju film. It is set in 1973, which gives it a nice vintage feel. The soundtrack helps too, as it is a solid mix of period music like Run Through The Jungle, Ziggy Stardust, etc... It has lots of stars. I think Tom Hiddleston pumped some iron, since he definitely looks more physically substantial. Sam Jackson and John Goodman both play Captain Ahab. Plus lots of other folks, like Brie Larson, the guy who played the chief in the first season of Agent Carter, and even a small appearance by Sheriff Longmire. John C Reilly really steals the show though, as a slightly unhinged pilot who has been marooned on Skull Island since WWII. At first I yelled at the screen a few times when the humans did some pretty bogus things. Like picking a fight with Kong in the first place. It is not just stupid, but plain evil. I mean, they go to a fantastic island and literally try to kill everything they see, just because it is there. If Persephone had been there, she probably would have killed all the humans in the first half hour. But at the least the movie seems to understand that. As later the chief from Agent Carter makes an insightful statement about how sometimes you have no enemies until you go looking for them. Plus as the movie goes on, the Captain Ahabish nature of Sam Jackson in particular becomes more and more evident. It is really easy to root for Kong all through the movie. The main characters (Hiddleston, Larson, and Reilly) are pretty much on the sidelines when the initial fight is picked with Kong, and they soon become Team Kongers. So one can still like them. Which I think is what saves the movie. This is also not a standalone film. It is clearly part of a franchise they are trying to build. There are a few hints throughout the movie proper. Monarch (from the most recent Godzilla movie) is a part of the expedition to the island, and is led by John Goodman. The hollow earth theory is also a big part of the plot (that there are massive areas underground where other creatures might live). Someone also mentions that the Castle Bravo nuclear tests were in fact an attempt to kill a monster (which is straight from Godzilla). Within a half hour I could see that Skull Island was actually Monster Island. Yes, that Monster Island. At the end of the credits there is a line saying that Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Gidorah are owned by Toho. That had me scratching my head, as none of them appear in the movie. Then came the post credits scene... It looks like they are calling the franchise MonsterVerse. I just read that Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be out in 2019. Then Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020. So all in all, if you like giant monster movies it is a decent watch. If you don't, then stay away from it. And the insane Russian superhero slugfest called Guardians is coming out on dvd here in the US this September. I am sure it will be terrible. But I plan to buy it anyway. Who can resist a werebear with a minigun? This post has been edited by SubRosa: Jul 23 2017, 10:23 PM

On one hand, he loves dinosaurs, dragons and what not. Does anyone remember the fighting game Primal Rage? This one loved that game! Mechwarrior, with its big stompy war machines, is one of this one's favorite series to this day. On the other hand, Kong, Godzilla, and his menagerie of giant enemies never really appealed to Khajiit. Based on your informative review, this one's initial impressions of the trailers are confirmed, and Khajiit will probably avoid seeing it. Thanks for posting this!

I just finished watching the live action Ghost In The Shell with Scarjo. It was good, really good. Solid sci-fi. It draws heavily from the original GITS movie, as well as bits and pieces from SAC and SAC 2nd Gig. In some cases scene per scene, and also in general look and tone. There are some changes though, but for the most part they work well. For example Batou has meat eyes, at least to start. But he loses them in an explosion during the movie and gets his cyber-eyes. The Major is simply called Major, and I am not sure why. She as always The Major, or Sho-sa. But I suppose calling her Sho-sa is the same as calling her Major, without the "The". Her background is also different, at least at the start. But we learn throughout the story that her memories are false, and as the film goes on she discovers who she really was (i.e. Motoko Kusanagi). The world is pretty much the same as the anime. The biggest exception is that The Major is the first full cyborg body person in the movie. While in the anime there were plenty of others like her. But the movie uses her being the first very well. It is an integral part of the plot. So I don't mind. It becomes a clear example of one of the things the anime always focused upon: the primacy of the spirit even in a wholly mechanized age. Even when memories can be hacked, the spirit remains pure. I thought the white suit she wears for optical camouflage looks pretty lame. But it is a huge improvement over her just being nude like in the original anime. Still, they could have simply colored it black and it would have looked like a sleek suit of futuristic armor... Most of the team is still there as well, but aside from Aramaki and Batou, they are mostly just background. Togusa was still clearly identifiable even though now he is played by an Asian actor (as opposed to the anime, where he was a Caucasian with a blond mullet). Saito is there and still a sniper. Ishikawa was also there, but he does not do any hacking. Borma is now black. I did not see Paz, he was replaced by a new female character named Ladriya. Aside from Borma and Ladryia, they all look very much like their animated counterparts. All in all it is a good movie. Much better than its box office performance. If you like science fiction/action movies you will like it. If you liked the anime you will like it (unless you are one of those people who hate anything that is even slightly changed between one format to another).
