Decided that with a new MechWarrior game coming out next year, and a resurgent interest in MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, it was high time Khajiit replaced his aging flight stick. Old flight Stick: Microsoft SidewinderNew flight stick: Logitech Extreme 3D ProWill take it for a spin tonight with MW4:M and see how it does.

QUOTE(Callidus Thorn @ Oct 3 2017, 01:34 PM) I used an old Logitech joystick back when I played a lot of X3: Terran Conflict, and just looking at that new one of yours makes me want to fire that game up again This one thinks it's going to do quite well. Khajiit held it and it feels good in his hands and it has way more buttons everywhere than the Sidewinder has. Part of the decision to get a new stick was that this one likes to control targeting enemies with the stick but the sheer lack of buttons on the Sidewinders stick meant that unless you switched weapon groups constantly you'd have to use a button on the base to select targets. Urgh, running out of buttons is the worst thing possible on a joystick. There's something about it that just seems to distort whatever game you're playing.

Well, Khajiit doesn't mind using the keyboard for some things (such as flushing coolant, selecting nav points, or commanding lancemates), but anything related to weapons systems and basic movement needs to be controlled by the stick (and the most important things within thumb reach on top of the stick). But yeah, running out of buttons sucks, lol

Ok, so Khajiit took the new flight stick for a spin and has some feedback.
Pros: So. Many. Buttons! Throttle lever feels good. Twist and pitch are pretty easy to control. More compact design than Sidewinder.
Cons: Horizontal movement feels a little stiff (thinking this will loosen up with use). Slight creep forward in the stick when resting hand on it (makes targeting reticle slowly move up on screen).
All in all, it performs well. It will take some getting accustomed to, but Khajiit was never able to control MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries as well with the Sidewinder as with this new Logitech stick. Holding the targeting reticle on target seems easier with the new stick, and the twist is less touchy, and therefore, smoother. Khajiit is quite pleased so far!

Nah just MechWarrior. I use a XB360 controller for games on PC when I can though. Khajiit finds that ESO, for instance, is a lot easier to play with a controller than m&kb. This post has been edited by TheCheshireKhajiit: Oct 4 2017, 04:13 PM

I too had a Sidewinder, though I believe ours were not the same model. Can't recall whether it used USB or the old Game Port connector. Maybe Game Port with provided USB adapter???? In any case I'm pretty sure I donated it to Goodwill sometime within the past year.

In any case I'm pretty sure I donated it to Goodwill sometime within the past year. Khajiit actually owned two Sidewinders. He got the first one back when MechWarrior 3 was out and it was a bit different than the one Khajiit shared a pic of. It may very well have had a gameport plug. The throttle was also different as instead of a lever it was a dial. That one also had a dedicated "Shift" button that the newer Sidewinder didn't have. I much prefer the m&k, especially after years of controller only. So many more hotkeys available, and my mouse has like 5 extra buttons, too.

Khajiit finds it hard to reach the number keys, which in ESO activates your special abilities. On the controller they are right there within easy reach.

QUOTE(SubRosa @ Oct 4 2017, 05:48 PM) I am still using my old Logitech Wingman Extreme from something like 20 years ago. I love the twist feature it has, like the Sidewinder. It is great for doing the torso twist in the Mechwarrior games.
Yup, twist functionality is a *must* in MW games.

You remind me of Super Mario Bros 3.
