Hi guys, is any of you running TES games via Wine on Linux? In particular, I am looking at Oblivion and its Construction Set extended with OBSE. And of course the other corresponding toys like TES4Edit, TES4ll, TES4LODgen, etc. The reason being is that Windows peed me off again a bit too much. Not going into detail here, need to watch my blood pressure... I read that it should be possible to run Oblivion and stuff through Wine, i.e., that various people have pulled it off successfully. I was just wondering how many sacrificial goats and toads it involved. I know my Linux, but never ventured into Wine for the lack of need... until now. For the first time since 1994.

Wine is a set of utilities that allows to run Windows programs under Linux - normally it isn't possible. The way I feel about Windows cannot be expressed in a polite company, and this site's policy would definitely have it all censored. I never NEVER had a Windows computer of my own - I switched directly from DOS to Linux back in 1994. Working with Windows at work taught me all I needed to know to form my opinion - and it is an informed opinion, I assure you. But now I bought a Windows computer specifically for Oblivion because Oblivion is of course a Windows program, and I thought it would be less hassle this way. May be I was wrong. I know people have been successfully running Oblivion under Linux using Wine, but I would prefer to hear from someone who is actually doing it, because I want to use the CS as well. Hence the question. EDIT: The problem that prompted this was definitely NOT with my mod. Not with the CS either. Not with TES4Edit. Not even with TES4Gecko. Not even with Oblivion not liking Windows10. No, it was Windows itself. But it took me several hours to narrow it down. Aaarggghhhh! This post has been edited by Lena Wolf: Nov 22 2021, 02:24 PM

Are you running Win10 on this computer?
Yes, it is Win10. The problem is that it keeps updating itself, and this is what screws it up. I could not find a PC with Win7.

QUOTE(mirocu @ Nov 22 2021, 04:48 PM) I've gotten two PCs with Win7 off our version of Ebay, maybe try there?
Admittedly, I gave up my search pretty quickly. This is my plan D, I am not very enthusiastic about Win7 because when our work computers used to run it, it typically lasted all of 10 minutes with me before sprouting the Blue Screen of Death. I think it is allergic to wolves. I figure I should try a dual boot and Oblivion in Wine first. Unless Oblivion runs under WinXP? That was the only version before Win10 that didn't just crash on me right from the start. Win10 doesn't crash, but it has other problems...

Sounds like maybe there was a problem at the local level there. As with ‘Rocu, when I was running Win7, it was fine. I’d still be running it if they hadn’t ceased support for it. As for your current problem, can you tell us what exactly is happening when trying to run it on Win10? Like is it giving you any error messages and such? I suspect the problem has to do with compatibility issues, which are the cause of a lot of problems with 2000’s Bethesda games. This post has been edited by TheCheshireKhajiit: Nov 22 2021, 07:29 PM

Well, I had a look on eBay. Yes, you can get a PC with Win7. But as soon as it has an HDMI port, they call it a "gaming PC" and the price triples. Basically, the same spec as my current PC but with Win7 costs 3 times more than the same thing with Win10 because then it's no longer "gaming". And I haven't had any wine yet, I swear!

On a different topic, I had a PC-related mini-scare earlier today. My mouse wheel stopped working. It turned, but nothing happened. I shook it. I pressed it. Nothing. Then, all of a sudden, while looking for a replacement at Amazon . . . POOF . . . it works again.
On to thankfully non-critical matters:
MS still insists that my Intel i7 7700K isn't good enough for Win11. I've some years before Win10 stops receiving updates/support. Until then, I'm sitting pretty. In the normal course of invents, I'd wager I'd have a new primary PC by then. But, will I still be mentally/physically fit enough to research/assemble one then? Will I even care? I hope so, but at my age ya never know.
I believe this is the longest I've got without upgrading my primary PC's GPU. With GPU prices as outrageous as they are these days, an upgrade is totally out of the question. Any 'new' card within my budget is little of any better than what I have. In fact, what I have sells for more now than it did when new five years ago! Thankfully, the GTX1070 (factory overclocked) remains a satisfactory gaming card at 1080p, though it does show its age on occasion.

Well, I made peace with my computer - for now. It took several reboots, some by pulling the power cable out. Something must have gone horribly wrong during the update, but eventually Windows righted itself. Everything is working again! Including the mod I was testing! But I prepared a Linux installation disk, put it on top of the PC, looked at the PC sternly and told it that it better behave or else - it's getting a lobotomy!

Windows did another update... Now Two Worlds II won't start up and Oblivion won't run. It messed up the NVIDIA driver or something that works with it. Linux lobotomy is one step closer. May be over the Christmas break - I'll need a few days to get it all set up, with all the extra layers to make it possible to run Windows programs.
