While I was having major angst over whether I could recover my ESO account or not (Spoiler: ZOS was able to take care of the problem), I went looking at other highly-rated MMORPGs.
FF XIV and Guild Wars 2 both got high marks and have a "free to play" version, so I installed both.
Right off the top- neither one is CLOSE to ESO in terms of graphics or complexity. That doesn't have to be a deal-breaker, but the difference is HUGE. Second- I had not realized how accustomed I have come to the fully-voiced nature of ESO. (Yes, the shipping guy at the Glenumbra docks is annoying after the hundredth time he comments on how heavy your crafting writ fulfillment looks, but still....). Not having to click through a wall of text every time you take on a quest...
All that said, I DO like the humor and variety in FF XIV, and will definitely dabble into the crafting soon.
Guild Wars is... darker... but also feels deeper than FF XIV.
And, because of more basic graphics, neither game seems to suffer from lag. (FF XIV tends to require a couple of attempts to get past the "queuing" due to server load message, but only a couple.) Also, a nice feature of Guild Wars 2 is a notification that "This instance of the world has few players. Would you like to transfer to one that is more populated?" I can see that being a benefit to those who focus on the multi-player aspect.
Overall at approximately 10-15 levels in on each, they are worth checking out, especially if graphics and voice-acting are not at or near the top of your gaming needs. If those are important, both feel pretty out-of-date. Note that all of the above is based on the "free" versions, so do not include the most recent DLC.
