An interesting development.

In my seldom-implemented, never-ending quest to remove junk foods from my diet, I decided to dispense with the Sugar-Free preserves I've blended into my daily Old Fashion Oatmeal with fresh/frozen fruit breakfasts from the getgo, substituting a thin pat of butter (from grass-fed cows) in its sted. Though I acclimated myself to the change to an extent, it must be admitted that the meal was now less enjoyable. Day before yesterday, I restored the SF preserves. To my surprise, the meal then tasted artificial and no better than it did without those preservers. Yesterday I did without preserves again. It tasted neither better nor worse than without them. Today, sans preserves, breakfast was surprisingly tasty. About as good as it used to taste with SF preserves. The lesson, I think, is that I need to allow sufficient time for the taste of added junk food to dissipate before reevaluating a meal's tastiness. In any case, I now suspect my experiment will end in success.

Lest ye think I'm becoming too Holier-than-thou in regard to my diet, I have not stopped adding SF preserves to my Wowbutter sammich lunches, which I eat three or four times a week. Wowbutter itself is not a "health food" though it's not ultra unhealthy (so far as I know). I sometimes ponder jettisoning it, but truth to tell can't think of anything I'd enjoy half so much that is as tasty, non-migraine triggering, economical, and simple/quick to prepare.

It was my youngest sibling's 25th birthday on Friday. They wanted to go out to the local Italian restaurant and I was asked to make a cross between a cake and a cannoli. So I found this recipe for a cannoli cake. Omg it was amazing. If you like tres leches and cannolis, I say go for it!

Since jettisoning Sweet-and-Low for an Erythritol/Stevia artificial sweetener, cutting out skim milk in favor of whole milk, removing sugar-free preserves from my morning oatmeal-and-fruit breakfast boil and using a pat of real butter (from grass-fed cows) instead, I've lost over five pounds, putting my weight at 135, exactly where I like to be nowadays. My 33-inch waist pants, which used to fit a bit too snuggly, are now comfortably loose. I don't think the change from tuna to salmon has anything to do with it. If anything, tuna is the more nutritious of the two. Except for its mercury content, which is why I ditched it.

I'm also back to taking somewhat-daily exercise walks, which might also come into play. But that alone, in years past, seldom dropped me below 140.

Do I feel better at the (slightly) lower weight? During those infrequent periods when I'm at my meager best, yes, I think so. It's not a great improvement by any means. But every little bit helps.

In an ideal world, I'd like to be circa 128lb with a 27/28-inch waist again. But in reality, I only ever achieved that by doing a good bit of strenuous exercise, much of which is now beyond my capacity. Such is life.

Speaking of salmon, those spine-column bones still creep me out. Very off-putting. And the black skin. I've done the research and know they are perfectly safe to eat. At first I attempted to remove the spine-bones. Now I just squash 'em up while preparing the salmon for use in my salads.

Speaking of a "heavy vegetable component", I've added several beans to my salad-suppers, both of which are noted as containing high nutritive value; Chickpeas and Lentils. Thankfully, both are available super cheap at Wally World. I also auditioned Black Beans, also noted for its nutritive qualities. I decided not to add them to my suppers, but now eat them as a standalone for some lunches, mixed with a small amount of Spicy Red Wickles. A smallish serving is quite filling.

I can't say that adding beans has improved the flavor of my salad-suppers but, so long as I can tolerate what I eat, flavor takes a backseat to potential health benefits. (My ideal is a meal both flavorful and wholly nutritious. Alas, budgeting limitations dictate that compromises must be made.)

Ooh, I LOVE Lentils!

Have you ever tried "Shelled Edamame?" It is like baby soy beans; meaning it is extremely high in protein and very low in carbs = and utterly delish. You can add them to any meat you are cooking; and casseroles; etc. to add an amazing flavor and very healthy boost to whatever you are cooking.

I surprised myself, weighing in at 132lbs, not long after breakfast. That's a decent weight for me, small as I am, but I wonder how low I'll drop before diet changes balance out to a new constant. I'm certainly eating no less than I did before switching to somewhat healthier foods, possibly a bit more.

Speaking of healthier foods, I'm auditioning blackberries this week. The idea is to use them as replacements for the banana I add to my oatmeal breakfast, assuming all goes well. The downside? Bananas are cheaper. The upside? Blackberries seem to be held in higher regard by the health community.

Goofed up today. My grocery list contained a head of lettuce. I bought one. Not a very good-looking head, but no head in stock was any better. Some were worse. As it turns out, I have a perfectly good head in the refrigerator veggie compartment. Bought a week ago, it's in better condition than the "new" head. A waste of $2.00.

Something I notice as I slowly alter my diet. Before, I was never hungry between meals, but always had a healthy appetite at meal times. Now, I'm never hungry, period. I eat because I need to, not because I want to. Which isn't to say that I don't appreciate flavorful food, as my Wowbutter sammich lunches (every other day) attest. I like those as much as ever. But only while I eat them. I'm no longer tempted to do so on days I normally abstain.

I screwed up at the grocery store this Monday. They carry what is called Antioxidant Blend in the frozen food section, consisting of the healthier berries, some of which I already eat. I decided to buy a bag instead of the fresh fruit I normally buy. Like other frozen fruits (except peach slices), I find I do not like the taste at all. But I've nothing to fall back on until next Monday's grocery run.

To be fair, I should have already learned to avoid frozen berries from prior failed attempts.

I'm experimenting, using info tabulated from a great many YT vids and other online resources, all with health supposedly in mind.

This week, instead of my traditional Oatmeal & Fruit breakfast, I'm doing something radically different. Breakfast in now three strips of bacon, an avocado / hard-boiled egg mixture with generous amounts of black pepper and paprika, and around ten fresh raspberries. As with my "normal" breakfast, I wash it down with whole milk.

I started out, Tuesday morning, with the three bacon slices, the meat of a whole avocado, and two hard-boiled eggs, eaten separately. As I've never liked the taste of avocado, I followed advice found it one YT vid and added a little Stevia...a mistake. This combo proved way more than I needed. I was bloated the entire day (which didn't stop me from eating lunch and supper). Stevia made avocado no more palatable, though I forced myself to down it all.

Wednesday, I reduced avocado meat and eggs by half. What's more, I smashed 'em up and blended 'em together, then added black pepper and paprika. To my surprise, I like this combo! Very tasty, and loaded with lots of health benefits. Bacon remained at three slices.

This morning's breakfast mimicked yesterday's. One unfortunate discovery; avocado meat does NOT keep well in the fridge. The half I'd saved the day before was inedible. This will be a major stumbling block. I can not afford seven avocados per week. I HAVE to somehow preserve those unused halves if this meal is to become a staple. (I'm researching it now.)

Observance: I need less milk with this breakfast combo, a good thing.

Observance: The advice I followed that says there is nothing wrong (health wise) with eating bacon make it a point to mention that we are to select bacon that is not cured with sugar and nitrate/nitrite. I read the label of every variety of bacon Walmart carries. They all are cured with sugar and nitrate/nitrite. Despite this, all but one variety claims to contain 0% sugar. I'll have to research this.

Observance: I noticed during yesterday's and today's exercise walks that I don't have quite the energy I had while on an oatmeal / fruit breakfast, but have better stamina. In fact I added a new extension to my course yesterday, and could have added even more distance. I suspect the lessening of energy might be the absence of a sugar-high, but we shall see.

There you have it. The jury's still out. Time, and maybe cost concerns, will tell in the end.
