Basically there's a few reasons given now, mostly health related, however originally it was there as a "because God said so".

Honestly, it’s hard to keep up with whether coffee is bad for you or not. One week “scientists” say it has health benefits. The next, another group says it causes cancer. Well living in general is bad for your health and if I don’t drink it I’ll get a headache, so I’m just like, the heck with it. Cheers to Juan Valdez!
