QUOTE(Renee @ Feb 16 2025, 09:41 PM) Yikes. Influenza can be really dangerous and draining, right? I got super-sick last summer after walking innocently through a late summer rain in bare feet. Thought it was COVID, but turns out it was pneumonia, and it was a nasty sickness. I seriously thought I was dying. What is malwarebytes? I don't feel like Googling, so just curious. Edit: Oh, I see, it's an app. So, sounds like success on your end! Yes, Malwarebytes is a security, antimalware, (duh!), and so-on app I use because I don't completely trust Microsoft's built-in security. And yes, I lucked out and solved a seemingly unsolvable app SNAFU. I can't for the life of me figure out what solved it, but at this point I'll take any victories I can get. If the influenza I caught is any indication then yes, they are utter misery. Like you, I've gone through (and continue to go through) extended periods when I feel as if I'm on death's doorstep. I too wonder if maybe my flu has morphed into pneumonia. Thankfully, if I survive the week, I've a periodic visit with my pulmonologist next Monday. QUOTE(Acadian @ Feb 17 2025, 05:59 AM) Decrepit, sure hope you continue getting better.
How odd on your puter. I hope it stays well-behaved now.
Thanks.

This phrase, it happens sometimes, right? A problem goes away, and we have no idea why or how. Feel better, D.

Reading through your description of the issue and the events surrounding its spontaneous resolution, my guess would be a software glitch on either the computer or modem which was cleared on boot up after the power outage. Typically when computers (and modems) boot up after a full shutdown (no electrical supply), they run self diagnostics to clear out any accumulated errors which may build up over time. This is the reason I go through modem, router, computer, phone and tablet once a week and shut them all down completely, let sit for a minute or so then reboot. Knock wood, I've not run into serious SNAFUs as you describe since I started doing this a number of years ago.

Yesterday evening, April 6, 2025, I replaced what has for many years been my secondary PC with the former primary PC that should have replaced it a year ago upon buying a new case to house its innards. The replacement has been assembled for some time, needing only testing to iron out potential SNAFUs. What spurred me to finally take the plunge? The assembled replacement was temporarily placed atop the desk where my secondary PC's monitor, keyboard and mouse reside, a precaution against potential flooding due to our now-ended stretch of catastrophic weather. The threat ended, I was about to move the replacement back to a corner of the computer room floor. It then came to me that, atop the desk, I could easily switch all needed connections from the old secondary PC to its replacement. This was done. There were indeed several SNAFUs. Not only did the replacement not boot into Windows, it couldn't reach the BIOS, with an ERROR CODE the motherboard manual doesn't explain. I removed the case front panel, reversed the polarity of one front panel connector, and ensured all memory modules were secure in their sockets. BINGO! I reached the BIOS, where I needed to re-designate my BOOT DRIVE. I also reset the memory to run in DUAL CHANNEL mode. That's all it took. The computer boots into Windows without issue. By then, it was a little past my normal bedtime. I shut down both PCs and retired for the day. First thing this morning, I fired up the new secondary PC, transferred an ancient game my brother plays every time he visits (with configuration and saves intact), and began the slow process of updating Windows and other "critical" programs. My next project is to reconnect and fire up my fourth computer long enough to officially remove its Win10 registration key. Why? It’s a "legit" Win10 key that I paid full price for. I want to use that key on my current primary PC, which has lacked a “legit” key since needing to rebuild its OS due to an unrecoverable partition error. Once done, I'll junk the fourth PC, there being nothing inside (or outside) worth saving. This post has been edited by Decrepit: Apr 7 2025, 11:51 PM

My web site and email are on their way to working again. You should be seeing my avatar again, but that's using the numeric IP address. DNS will take a few more days to get switched over to the UK one, which will "repair" the "broken" links using the name. Once email is working, I can log in to ESO on my main account again. My new address is now working for me. It may take a couple of days to work its way to everyone else.

Great! ------------------------ Today I updated and synchronized all three USB drives, my main Win7 and my parents' Win7. Turns out I had missed some pics here and there but now all that has been fixed. Plus of course the most recent Fallout 3 and Oblivion savegames.

QUOTE(mirocu @ May 10 2025, 07:53 AM) To all tech people:
Is it true that there's something better out there than DosBox? Been trying to get Duke3D to work on a Win 7 but it claims "something doesn't support fullscreen" and something about 16 bit. Changing resolution doesn't work, nor does compatibility mode (it never does).
Thoughts?
I have absolutely no experience with DOSbox, but believe that DOSbox-X is a popular and apparently more feature-rich substitute. It can be found here.
