Everything i've heard about the books says they're basically poor quality ripoffs of the work of people like Tolkein, so i never bothered to read them, and will also not bother to get a game based on them.

The book was horrible, and I can only image how Eragon will be.

Yeah.. in 6th grade my LA teacher liked to read out of books she liked... well she read out of Eragon for weeks and I HATED IT. It was so boring, and everything was just like every other fantasy out there. I was also agitated to see the name Eragon, which is so close to Tolkien's names... coughAragorncough

It does a very bad job at being a cookie-cutter fantasy "novel", too.

Me too. It was a "WTF?" moment.

My mother got it for me because I like dragons. I managed to read it twice and I realized just how crappy of a book it was.

I never read it. Only people at my school who did read it are the fantasy-book-obsessed people.

And at my school (I'm still a middle-schooler) they have a "Book Fair" where they sell a bunch of books. And they advertised that book funny..So yeah. XD I never read it

I don't know.... I've read it once, and I didn't think it was bad.

Or did you write a better book(s) when you were fifteen? (I think I'm smelling the ugly scent of jealousy here nono.gif )

And anyway, almost all fantasy books are a rip-offs of another fantasy book. (Dwarves, elves, dragons, magic, gnomes, etc., remember?)

I thought Eragon and ELdest were decent if I read through them and didn't try to compare it to anything else. I own both of them actually. As far as a game of it, well, I don't think it's anything I'll be buying because 1. I'm still playing Oblivion and 2. If I buy another game I won't write as much (and I'm already not writing enough).

I liked eragon and eldest a lot, it was not a tolkein rip off because he added a lot more detail to things. Tolkein was an awesome writer yes, but he really didnt describe things to the extent that a lot of writers did. It was kinda like he expected everyone to know what hes talking about. Magic in LOTR was horribly done in my opinion. Christopher Paolini was 16 when he came up with the idea for eragon and around 18 or 19 when it was written and published. Hes like 21 or 22 now

Even the Dark Tower series by Stephen King is a rip-off of other fantasy books? I mean, as far as the Dark Tower series goes, it's not like other fantasy books.

QUOTE

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but when I was fifteen I could write much better than that, and that was only a year ago.

I really... don't see any logic in that argument.

Well, I don't know if I'd call it Rip-Off so much as mutual agreement. I thought in the fantasy world it was agreed that certain beings looked and behaved a certain way. Like imagine if in some books Dwarves were 12 foot tall & stringy? Or fairies were as big as dragons but only in some books. It would be too confusing. All this lore came from campfires and hearths of long ago .... so let's respect it, I say.

Of course there always is room for improvisation and creativity ... especially among Dragons. Truly, I believe that the earliest of Neanderthal men saw the last of the dinosaurs in person, perhaps even helped hunt to extinction ... and carried the story of the magnificent beasts even up to this day. Fire=breathing?? If they were swamp dwellers they could have been methane-based creatures.

I hate when people bring that up in this guys defense. The only reason his book got published in the first place is because his parents paid big bucks to have it published.

Well, wether it is good or bad, it does seem to be making money. smile.gif

I've just read a short explanation of the thing. Sounds like way too many 'mysterious' characters, 'supreme objects' and stuff like that showing up at convenient times for my taste. Then again, I've fallen victim to that mistake myself and I'm 16 which is not that much of a difference.

I won't say anything about the writing cause I haven't read the book yet. So I won't claim to be better, though I do claim to be a not a too bad writer. tongue.gif If only I ever managed to finish my original work.

Yea, I don't think Fan Fiction is often searched out by publishers. Too bad, I think mine's quite good tongue.gif (though it could do a bit of editing some day once it's done).

Mmmmm ego.

I've noticed this book around but decided against reading it, heck, I couldn't even continue the Harry Potter series after Goblet of Fire. I became interested in other authors, and they had huge series that I wanted to finish that eventually I abandoned Potter. Maybe once I'm satisfied with other books I might get back to it.

umm just go overdose ok? you are an idiot, there is perfect logic in there, like it was said fantasy books have to keep the same general idea, dragons are big, dwarves are small, elves are advanced humans who are quicker and more graceful. The world is nothing like Middle earth

Hey, Floro, respect other ideas and opinions, and please.. no flaming.

Other than that.. please let this pointless thread die. All it seems to be is a hatefest.
