A Gathering of the Elements

"Can I get you anything?" Gengen asked me, he was the owner of the local tavern. It had been his for nearly thirty-five years.
"No," I responded. He was nice enough to let me stay even though I did not purchase anything.
I looked around the dank tavern, the wooden walls though chipped were fairly clean. The glass tables were in great condition, and the chairs. Well just chairy I guess.
He frowned but didnt say anything at my refusal to drink, as he always had. I do not drink currently, and I dont plan on doing it anytime soon.
Others were chatting merrily, but I was working. With my pen I wrote of my accounts so I could compile a book. I was a bit low on septims at the moment and this was my last idea.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 1

I made my way around the guild to the back, where I was to meet Drosho for an assignment. He was there already, a look of impatience on his face.

"Sorry, I got held up a little-"

He raised his hand and spoke,

"I do not have time to chat," he said as he interrupted me "now listen closely."

He took a breath and said:

"Yesterday at the local office of Imperial law, a man reported some trouble with a drunk. The Imperial guards said they couldn't arrest him without witnesses, and there weren't any. So he came to me to deal with the problem. He was the imperial guard, and the drunk dead by tomorrow. What do you say?"

I thought about it, this would be my first attack on an Imperial guard and it could be very dangerous, especially if he was always in the company of others. Finally I answered:

"Sure, 3000 septims."

Drosho frowned, and handed me a bag.

"2500 and whatever is in this bag."

I took a look at the contents, and saw several pearls. Smiling I said "A deal."
---------------------------

Luckily enough I found the guard alone, easy kill. Drawing my weapon I approached, cloaked by the shadows of night. *THUMP* and then *CRASH*
I froze as I realized I had knocked over a jar laying outside the tavern on a barrel and the guard spun around.

"Well, if it isn't Ita."

"Hister, is that you?"

"Of course it is, now what would you be doing with your weapon out like that. You look like you were about to strike someone dead or something."

"I'm sorry Hister."

"What." he uttered before falling to the ground. A wound gushing blood from his side.
-------------------------
I stopped writing there as a tear fell on the page, I dryed it as well as I could. Leaning back in my chair I looked out the window of the tavern.

Chapter 2

I ran from the dead body of Hister. My friend since childhood. He had become what he had always wanted to be, only to be murdered by someone such as me.
I could not sleep that night, I cried certainly. Silently, my tears came as I thought about Histor.

----------------------

A girl had sat down on my left and was looking curiously at my story, I looked up at her and she turned away.

"Can I be of any assistance to you?" I asked her kindly.

"No, I was just um, interested in your story."

I realized then that she might have been standing over me for much of the time I had been writing. It was too late to try and hide the truth.

-------------------

In the morning Drosho was at my door, and he questioned me. I had forgotten my job to kill the drunk and he wanted half of the septims back and all of the pearls. I brought them to him, what a waste, I had killed a man for so little.

-----------------

I said to the girl:

"Well come here, let me read it to you. First, however, you must tell me your name."

"Klonika miss, Klonika." She said shyly, "I grew up here, where are you from."

"Well, you're certainly curious aren't you Klonika. Come, bring your chair a little closer and I will read to you. As to where I'm from, I'll tell you later."

So she moved her chair, and I read aloud as I wrote.

----------------

I went to spend the few septims I had, to rid myself of any evidence of this act. As I walked along the road that went uptown I passed children playing. What caught my eye was the fact that they looked very undernourished. They were playing with dolls made of twigs.

I walked up to them, and before they could look up I dropped the septims I had left beside their little-twig dolls.

Then I walked away, with the stunned children looking after me. I felt a little better now.

Chapter 3

Klonika smiled, she must have thought it was a story. Not a biography. Oh well, best if it remains that way.
----------------

When I reached home I sat down to think. The dead guard would obivously be noticed missing. I would not be an immediate suspect, but what if the found out. I would die for my crime. Holding my head in my hands, I just sat and cried.

--------------

"Why is it so sad?" Klonika asked me.

I looked at her, I didn't have an answer for such a question. I would have said "That's how my life was!" but that would give it away.

So I told her "That's just my style of writing, I like dramas."

------------

Standing up I left the house, my few belongings with me. I had my weapon in my belt and some food in a small sack. I was going to have to leave town. So I left, not taking a second look back for it would remind me of my dead friend.

When I started out on the road, I was scared at first. I had traveled outside my hometown before, but never alone. It was also very cold, and though I was used to it, I would not be able to stand it at night.

----------

Speaking of cold, I noticed Klonika was shivering.

"Gengen, something warm for this girl. Just make sure it's not alcohol." I said the last sentence sternly, you never knew when it came to him.

"Why, thank you miss." Klonika said as the drink was placed in front of her. She picked it up and drank it little by little.

"Tell me Klonika, who are your parents?"

The girls face grew sad, had I offended her?

"They died miss, a long while ago. I have no recollection of them but my caretaker does and she says they were very kind people. Besides that I know not much."

I diverted the topic:

"Okay, I'm going to start writing again. Are you ready."

Klonika responded "Yes miss, I am."

Chapter 4

I knew now that my all my happiness in life had come to an end. That I would forever be an outcast, but it did not affect me. For as I walked down that cold road I realized that I deserved this. I totally disregarded life. Murdered many, including young people. Though they were older than just children, barely.
Somehow, though I deserved this, I would not let the cold get to me as I fled on. With great confidence did I continue.

------------

I paused, at an end I was with my first story in my book, but many would have to follow. Just not today.

"What are you waiting for?" Klonika asked when she saw me close my book.

"I think that's enough for today," I said.

And as I did so Imperial guards burst into the room, heavily armed. They spotted me.

"There she is." And they ran towards me.

I stood up and drew an arrow. The first one came and I shoved into his chest, taking another arrow out and throwing it at the following guard. They were easy to kill.

"Klonika, you'll have to leave now." I told the girl who looked shocked.

"I must be going, maybe I will return sometime. Not anytime soon though."

Klonika looked sad as I walked through the door, she may never hear more of my story. She muttered a "Goodbye" and ran out of the tavern scared, of me maybe. I grabbed my book and shoved it into my bag, I left at a good pace.

When I got outside, I headed East till I came to a small house, I had been living here. Now I would have to take my few important belongings and leave town immediately.

Wherever I went I was followed by them. It seemed I would never be left be.

I collected everything I needed, including my sword, which I had foolishly not taken with me to the tavern. Now I stuck it in my belt and walked out of the house.

When I came out I could see the figures of two more imperial guards entering the tavern to do an investigation. Another crime to add to my list.

This was it then I said "goodbye" the town and left through the Eastern exit, luckily the guards patrolling were the ones investigating the crime scene.

As I stepped out of the town, a great feeling of sadness came over me, and I wondered why I had ever become an assasin to begin with.

On the road I noticed nothing and heard nothing except my own footsteps. The animals were lively but my mind ignored them. I could no longer be happy.
