Color me loveable
By Barrie Dolnick

Most of us have a favorite color. Maybe you’re drawn to sky blue because it makes your eyes stand out or you find forest green particularly comforting. Whatever the case, your preferred hue can reveal a lot about what makes you tick. And the same holds true for the people you date—you’d probably have a different impression of a date if he or she said, “My favorite color is yellow,” versus “My favorite color is black.” That’s because color speaks a powerful, silent language. And I can help you understand it. I’m a success coach and best-selling author of Simple Spells for Love and other books, and I’ve studied color theory. So, look up your favorite color below — and your date’s best-loved shade — and get some colorful insights that will benefit your romantic life.

===================

Red
What it represents: Ah, the color of passion, anger and high blood pressure. Red is a primal color. It represents primal urges, like lust (“I must have you now!”) and fury (you know the phrase, “seeing red,” right?). Yes, red is a commanding color: Think of how stop signs get you to halt in your tracks and how you stand back when a red fire engine goes whizzing by.

Understanding people who love it: They act — sometimes without thinking — on immediate desires. In fact, they’re usually the poster child for immediate gratification. It’s up to you if you go for it... or proceed with caution.

Orange
What it represents: OK, orange is not exactly the easiest color to wear and it’s not the most common favorite color, but guess what? Orange is as sexy as it gets. Orange is a mellowed red—and it takes primal, lusty urges and mellows them with a softer vibe. Orange is the color of early attractions, emotional responses, and inner magnetism. Oh, and one other thing: Orange is also close to gold, the color of success and wealth.

Understanding people who love it: Someone who likes orange is alive with feelings, the ability to nurture, and can intuit a path to success. If your favorite color is orange, you don’t have an “off” switch when it comes to passion. This is all good stuff, but there’s nothing casual about the connections this kind of person usually forges.

Yellow
What it represents: Yellow is the color of the sun, vitality, power and ego... but it’s not a great indicator of romance. Watch out for self-centered, me-first energy when someone prefers yellow to the rest of the rainbow.

Understanding people who love it: If yellow is your favorite color, temper your use of the word “I” when you’re interested in someone else. You can come across as too ego-centric. Now, if you’re dating someone whose favorite hue is yellow, make sure to jump in and share stories about yourself, since this person may not give you much room.

Green
What it represents: Here is the heart of the matter. Green is the color of love. (It’s no coincidence that we make our money in the same color...) Green is the color of life and abundance — leaves, grass, plants — it’s all about growing, expanding, and living. So why don’t we give ferns instead of roses on Valentine’s Day? Because green is about expansive, humanistic love and acceptance, not bodice-ripping romance. What’s more, green is a nice person color, a do-gooder, be-gooder kind of color. This person has a warm heart. Hot passion is probably in there somewhere, buried under the integrity and honor.

Understanding people who love it: If you love green, you put the greater good before your own good—but try a little selfish behavior once in a while.

Blue
What it represents: Blue is a color of clarity, communications and charm. And regardless of the shade, this hue says: “I like to be understood.” On the downside, under stress, a “blue” person can send mixed messages, have trouble making up their mind, or just space out.

Understanding people who love it: If blue is your favorite color, you never run out of anything to say—expression is your strong suit. And if you’re dating someone “blue”? The same holds true; you should always know where you stand.

Purple
What it represents: Purple evokes the energy of illusion, imagination and fantasy. Or should we say purrrrple? Purple tends to inspire foreplay, romance, flirtation and teasing—it builds anticipation with playfulness. The downside of purple is unrealistic expectation. Is it easier to live in your fantasy world than the real world? Some purple-lovers prefer it.

Understanding people who love it: If you love purple you can be an imaginative romantic or prefer imaginary romance—depending on how you feel.

White
What it represents: White is light—the combination of all colors. White symbolizes purity (the virginal bridal dress, the christening gown) and spirituality. There’s a simplicity to it, too.

Understanding people who love it: People who love white are probably clean and orderly. While white isn’t the sexiest color, it is certainly healthy.

Black
What it represents: Like white, black is a combination of all colors, but instead of purity, it represents the unknown, the unseen—mystery. Black basically holds back information... but there’s no denying that it has strong associations in our culture with “the dark side” and evil.

Understanding people who love it: If your favorite color is black, you are more hush-hush than ha-ha. The silence of this color lets others fill in the blanks. Black says “I’m not telling you anything.” People who love black can be tough nuts to crack, but quite possibly worth the effort.

I love black. It doesn't hurt my eyes like some of the other colours do.

And if you ever visit the netherlands and everybody (well almost everybody, you won't see me in that colour.) dresses up in orange with weird hats, facepaint and streets filled with orange stuff. No it doesn't mean we dutch are suddenly romantic or something. It's just the football season. smile.gif

I forgot to add that I am a Purple all the way. Purple computer, monitor, chair, CD shelves, mousepad, wristpad, down to the stapler and scotchtape holder ... everything including the phone at my desk is purple. My kitchen is purple and red. Weird combo I know but an Oriental-like rug in the kitchen pulls it together. Purple pots n pans, my dish set is deep purple and as many of the utensils I could find range from lavender to eggplant in hue. Purples and blues fill my closet, including shoes and purses although I do have a more sedate end that hangs browns, blacks and whites. Tan with lavender seems to be my adventure clothes colors.

So, what it says about purple seems to apply to me. You can be the judge from knowing me here. But I sure do love fantasy and couldn't live without it in my life. Cain and I pretty much pretend that our condo is our castle, all the other tenants are our vassels and the lawn maintenance crew are the serfs. BTW-black n white tiedye bathing suit but purple flipflops are my regal swimming attire.

I would have guessed you for being a Black dresser, Jack Cloudy. I have heard of that Orange thing and funny hats in the netherlands before. I was also reading a real estate book and found out that there is a difference between Holland and the Netherlands. Something like the difference between England and the British Isles. Like a lot of people, I used to think they were interchangeable terms.

I have three favorite colors, really.

But the one I will always say first is black. It fits me quite well.

Oh now I'm so curious Zarrexaij. What are your other two favorites, I wonder.

For me, I think I like the range between greens, blues and purples - especially turquoise in the blue/green range. I like pink sometimes. Other than that I favor earthy colors and grey, black and white combos.

I find it difficult to wear yellow or orange, although my hubby got me a bright orange (like a roadside cone) plastic rainsuit for when I bicycled in the rain so I didn't get hit in traffic. Funny thing was when I'd arrive all wet and orangey in a store to shop, all these old guys would be saying they wore rainsuits like mine for fishing and telling me fishing stories and stuff. Just the thing to cheer up a rainy day. Not.

My colour is blue, though I prefer the definition of the colour that I have instead of the one provided. it says some of the same things but is a bit more elaborate.

QUOTE
Blue, sometimes called the color of distinction, is characterized by calm hands and a reflective mind. A natural sedative, blue is the color of deliberation and introspection, conservatism and acceptance. Blue has almost universal appeal and is considered to be the most aesthetically appealing color. Blue is the color of respect and wisdom. But, those who lean toward blue sometimes use reason for selfish and self-justified purposes. It is the color of control and passive aggresion as well as the color of the sea and the sky. Blue is for those contemplative people who exercise caution in words and actions and for those who always weigh the options.

Very cool Megil, I like that definition of blue too. Do you still have a link to that site by any chance? I'd like to see what they say for purple & black since so many people here like black.

I got it from a book which I don't have at college with me :S. I just happen to have the blue definition written down on my facebook.

Though I'm usually wearing brown or white (with blue jeans), I've always liked the color orange, it's my msn font color, used to be my aim font color, and I always pick it out when I see a choice of colors for like, prizes and stuff.

Oh okay. Guess I could look more definitions of Purple up online. Funny it didn't say anything about it used to be a royal color.

I think I'll go look at Doomed One's personality test thread. blink.gif

LOLOL, speaking o' the devil ... there is Doomed.

Shoulda guessed the Orange connection for you I think. You certainly do not have an OFF Button when it comes to passion as they say about orange. Or at least not about passionate causes. Don't know about your personal passion (but I will look both ways if I have to be seen in that orange rain suit.)

I love the colour red, I suppose it fits me well because I have a type 3 personality (motivator)

I also love the colour because it can be so deep. When it comes to aesthetics, you can't beat red.

I would have to say my favourite colours are either blue or green. Though for clothing, I usually wear blues, or reds complimented with white. I have the odd green piece of clothing, particularly one really nice shirt.

Well we are getting a nice showing here, many colors metioned. Orange & Purple get a mention and the passion of red comes through loudly. The clarity of blue has made itself clear and noble green is given due. Nuetrals are mentioned in passing. .... but black seems to be winning.

We have a lot of emot-ninja1.gif mysterious people here among us. lol Not so surprising at a forum dedicated to Oblivion I suppose. ph34r.gif

Somewhat of a cross between green and blue (as is Mrs. Treydog). As far as the orange thing- anyone from Holland would feel right at home here on a Saturday in fall- Tennessee football fans turn the town orange.

That's cool Trey. Both about the orange and you and Mrs. Treydog.

Wait! OMG ... have you already become one of these couples who dresses alike or in matching colors? HAhahah! You know those little old couples you see at the mall tottering along hand-in-hand all mixed & matched in their color schemes. I think it is just adorable. Not quite that far gone yet- although I do have a couple of "World's Greatest Grandad" shirts... Keep teasing Mrs. Treydog by saying I am going to get some plaid Bermudas, black support socks, and brown loafers to visit Savannah (where the grandsons live).
