For me, its a tie between chinese warrior Zhao Yun and zombie killer Chuck Greene.

Zhao Yun - A man who wishes nothing more than peace and justice in the land, and loyally serves his lord Liu Bei til the end. What a noble guy!

Chuck Greene - An obvious skitzophrenic, who will say to his daughter he will come back soon with zombrex, but instead rides a girls tricycle in nothing but his underwear and a SWAT helmet while throwing guitars at zombies. Pure. Awesome.

Is it arrogant to say my favorite hero is the one I write about?

If it isn't, then him.

If it is, then Don Quijote de la Machana.

Sam Vimes from the Discworld books; one of the most realistically flawed and genuinely human heroes I've ever had the pleasure of reading about, and I love him from the top of his slightly battered helmet to the paper-thin soles of his boots.

Good call on Vimes there, have to agree totally.

To choose another... I think Hamlet if he's allowed to be called a hero. The almost inevitable consequence of his trying to sit on the fence and the balance of weakness in not taking a side with strength really rounds him as a flawed but likely character.

If he's not a hero then I'll have to go for Fitz from Assassin's Apprentice. Another deeply flawed and slightly self destructive character with vaguely noble goals.

He's typically viewed by most literary types as a classical tragic hero, so I reckon you are yes.

Also, Sam is definitely another favourite; in a story full of dark overlords, heroic, sword wielding kings (who I may have a guy-crush on tongue.gif) and immense battles, it's quite something to think that the real hero of it all is a farmer who just cares about doing the right thing and getting it done.

Harry Harrison's "Bill the Galactic Hero" - totally credible real hero who just happened to do the right thing at the right time, by mistake.
