This thread got me thinking about DF again. The VDMSound setup has known problems- hard to strafe or move backwards; almost impossible to swim or jump; and, of course, the infamous "invisible quest object/person" bug. So without going into too much gory detail, here is what works:

Create a DOS 6.22 boot floppy.
Create a DOS partition of no more than 2GB on a second HDD.
Install DF on the DOS partition.
Boot to XP.
Create a DF shortcut on desktop.
Edit Dagger.exe to accomodate fact that DOS freaks if it sees more than 768 MB of RAM and to basically emulate the old config.sys and autoexec.bat memory settings.
Use Mo'Slo to have processor run DF at .26% (yes, that is approx. 1 fourth of 1 percent) of actual processor speed.

Game runs as well as it ever did. (ie- frequent CTDs), but "save early- save often." No swimming, strafing, backing problems; no invisible quest NPCs; no spinning rats.

It's good to be a geek sometimes.
