Good call on Vimes there, have to agree totally.
To choose another... I think Hamlet if he's allowed to be called a hero. The almost inevitable consequence of his trying to sit on the fence and the balance of weakness in not taking a side with strength really rounds him as a flawed but likely character.
If he's not a hero then I'll have to go for Fitz from Assassin's Apprentice. Another deeply flawed and slightly self destructive character with vaguely noble goals.
