There are still plenty of male writers who can write good female protagonists and vice versa. If they can't write good characters of the opposite gender, don't hire them; they're clearly no good.

Edit: I'd kind of hoped that GTA V would have had a female protagonist on the roster, as it would be interesting to see how a female character would deal with the typically male-dominated world of semi-organised crime. Felt like a bit of a wasted opportunity with three guys.
