Chapter 7

Kiln walked around town pointlessly until dark, he wasn't tired. He couldn't help but wonder what trouble York was in and how he needed his help. He walked back towards the Eight Plates and entered.

Tomorrow he would go to the fort. It would be an awkward return even though he'd heard Larrius had left days before, off to Gnisis for his evaluation. Larrius was quite corrupt, perhaps he'd been discovered.

Kiln sat with Rami and the drunks listening to them laugh and sing. He stared at Rami's face when she wasn't paying attention, amazed at her beauty. The most popular drink was likely flin but he drank what he always had, the bitter but effective mazte.

He poured more of the drink for himself, watching the brown liquor flow softly from the opening and into the tall mug. At the moment everything seemed perfect but things never stayed like that for long in his experience.

In the morning he would get his armor repaired, buy some supplies and food and wait until the following day to meet York at the fort.

Kiln opened the journal and read more of it's pages,

"Today I talked to Caius again, he wants me to speak with some stupid orc in the mage's guild about doing a favor or something, I'm nothing but an errand boy I swear..."

Kiln thought for a moment, he'd met with the same orc...strange how their paths had led together so many times but it was probably nothing. For now he would sleep and worry more about that later, he put the journal back into it's pouch and lied it beside the bed.

Rami walked in lying down beside him and he fell into a deep sleep holding her close to him.

[Kiln]

After some time of doing nothing, Kiln fell asleep. He saw strange colors swirl around him and he found himself in his parent's home. His mother and father were getting ready to go on another exploration of a dwemer ruin just inside the ghostfence.

"Don't go father." Kiln pleaded

"Oh come on now...you know we'll be back soon." His father said with a smile

"We should return within a week's time...there should be enough food in the baskets but with the way you eat...I've left some gold in the chest just in case." His mother told him

Kiln stood there, his teenage years had come, when most of the human and beast races were ready to begin life but Kiln still relied very much on his parents to support him, he was not ready to begin with his life.

"Mother...please don't go..." Kiln begged his mother

"Listen...everything will be fine Kiln...now run along and play with your friends." She said softly

"Please mother...something bad is going to happen, I can feel it." Kiln said

"Son, I don't know what you're worried about...things are always the same." His father said

"Not this time." Kiln said staring at the floor

"That's enough Kiln...now go on." His father said softly

Kiln knew something was wrong, but he did not know what. Something deep inside of him told him something horrible was going to happen but at the same time he knew that whatever was going to happen was bound by fate and not even a king could change how events would unfold for everything was already decided.

He left his home and played with his good friend Lenas from down the street for some time before returning and eating dinner with his parents.

Kiln's vision faded and when it returned he found himself kissing his mother goodbye and giving his father a stern handshake to wish them off. His parents left quickly towards ghostgate and Kiln watched as they faded out of sight.

His mind jumped from that moment to when he was in school. Lenas sat beside him and the teacher glared at them as they joked. An nicely dressed imperial entered the room and spoke with his teacher for a moment and then she called Kiln away from the others.

"Oh come one...we were just playing. It won't happen again." Kiln said

"No...this isn't about your behavior...your parents have returned to town...you can have the rest of the day off to spend time with them." She said

Kiln was overjoyed to hear that they had returned early though he wondered why, they had only been gone for a few days and why his teacher had been so nice to him. He ran towards the dirt path to his home to greet his parents.

"Alright the storms starting to let up, we'd better go now." a voice rang through his head

Kiln could feel himself being lifted by the arms and he opened his eyes.

"Come on mate, we gotta get you to that camp." Jinx said

"He's losing too much blood, we need to get there quickly." York said

They sat him down and pushed the boat to the water, quickly returning for Kiln. He was lifted into the small boat and he laid down, confused as to what was going on, he still hadn't fully woken up.

He realised after a few minutes that he'd been dreaming and the harsh reality of his parent's death was fresh upon his mind. Kiln lay there in the boat as it rocked gently with the waves. He thought of the way events had unfolded leading him where he was now, he knew his fate had already been decided and nothing he could do would change that.

Even so, Kiln wondered what would happen to him and what all of this was leading up to as he stared at the horizon from his back, the sun was just starting to rise.
