Not that I should be one to listened to more then others (I am just a newb myself even though I pump out posts like I get paid to) but I think one of the most important things to concern yourself with is to have a good solid plot. Don't stray too far off course or else you will find yourself trailing off into randomness. That and give your character personality. Nothing sets your story apart from the others then having a character with a very unique personality.
*Insert drum roll here* and the single most important part of all! The biggest piece of advice you can have..... HAVE TONS OF FUN DOING IT!
