The next InstallmentI crawled up to the lip of the river bank, wrapping my fingers around the cracked edges of an Ayleid stone and hauling myself up to a good vantage point. As I optically scouted the ruins, my shadowed eyes spotted a plume of smoke rising just to the right of the ruin. I pulled back, preparing myself for if I had been spotted.
After an uneventful couple of minutes staring at the night sky and praying to whatever Gods were listening I decided it was safe to have another look. As I lifted my head, slower this time than before, I gazed at the sight in front of me.

Where I had expected a wolf or two and their owner – or maybe one of those Ayleid skeletons I had read about – I found a much more fearful sight. A band of four, maybe five bandits were camped only a few metres away! I stifled a gasp and checked their position more closely. Two of them were standing around the fire cooking something, but I was too far to discern any detail on either the humans or their meal. The others were sitting to the left of the fire, gazing over something in between them.
I shuffled to the left, as to make the stone block the view. I was neither willing nor prepared to harm these people – I knew not what they had done and any attempts at harm would surely cause my death. I had not been free long enough to be foolish…yet.
