Well not quite. I must admit I didn't play the original Elite, but I played the two sequels (Elite: Frontier and Elite: First Encounter). There were no talking machines, but the games were incredibly good. The only game that has superceded Frontier in regards to atmosphere is Morrowind, imho. But even that first sequel was so much better than any other games available at the time that I can understand that the phrase '1337' evolved from that first game way back then...
And that Wiki page was indeed interesting and well written. I bet many 14-year olds are disappointed when they realise that the 1337 language was invented long before they were born...
