I play a mage most of the time. I look as it the same way I look at heavy and light armour. Do you want powerful and enduring, meaning lots and lots of magicka. Or a mage with enough magicka to perform, but with no negatives.
Altmer obviously are the beasts for mages with a good birthsign.
Bretons get a good bonus and a good resistance.
I certainly would not count out Nords and Dunmer (I play a Dunmer) while they dont have any magicka bonuses, the resistances to frost and fire are useful as they are common attacks. Plus Dunmer get Mysticism and Destruction bonuses.
I think you get my point.
As you want a big bad mage with a massive well of magicka Id only reccomend Altmer or Breton. Altmer has more magicka, but deadly weaknesses. Breton has fair amount of magicka with no weaknesses. Obviously the two become better or worse depending on Apprentice, Atronach, and mage. But that applies to any mage character, no matter the race. I can manage fine with the mage birthsign, provided I dont get reckless. Also with a stock of potions/welkynd, it compensates for the lack of magicka.
