Part 7
Kerric had led me into a cave, or what appeared to be a cave. Inside, however, I discovered so much more. When we first entered the humid cave, I found myself surrounded by lycanthropy victims. Most were men. All apparently lived in a rough manner, and were entertaining themselves in various ways when we arrived.
"Who's the new meat?" called a shirtless man in the front of the crowd. He wiped blood off of his face as he spoke. He must have been in a fight with another lycan. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. Not even the slightest idea of a sentence formed in my mind.
"First off, he's not one I want you playing with, Jyral," Kerric growled. I was relieved, because I didn't
want to play with Jyral. "He'll be staying with me, and I don't want anyone bothering him," he continued. I looked at the man cautiously.
Why am I staying with him?Jyral backed down, but another older looking lycan stepped up in his place. He puffed his chest out as he said, "Now, what's so special about 'im, Kerric? Is he fragile?" He looked around at his friends, and they all burst out with laughter. Cold, mocking laughter.
Kerric shot a look at them all that silenced their mockery of me. "No, he's not fragile. He's just...better than the rest of you scum!" he spat. "I'd start showing some respect; he'll be...supervising you starting tomorrow." The whole lot of them glared at Kerric, and then they turned their stare to me. My heart must have stopped.
I'm starting to think the Imperial Prison was better than this...Kerric led me through the bitter mob into his own personal quarters. He pointed to a small cot against the wall, and said "That's your bed. Hope you aren't expecting anything too fancy, new blood." I sat down on the small bed, burying my head in my hands.
"Why are you doing this, old man?" I questioned. I looked up in time to see Kerric stop what he was doing and stare at me.
"Do what? What am I doing for you?" he asked.
I looked at him carefully, studying his emotions. As a thief, I was good at studying emotions. This man, however, was blank. "You are letting me stay in your room. Away from...them, I might add."
"Make no mistake," Kerric clarified. "I'm not doing much for you. I know what they would put you through if you slept in the same room as them, so I give you a safer place to sleep. As for putting you over those pitiful fools-" he stopped, searching for the words to say. "Well, let's put it simply. I see great things in you, new blood. You're quick, you're strong, and you have gained control over your powers quicker than any of them," he said, pointing toward the den of lycans.
"You quite easily have the potential to lead us all one day," he continued. "
That is why I'm doing this." I stared at him in disbelief.
Am I that great? He broke the look and walked back into the den.
