For the past several weeks I've been immersed in Skyrim. Yup. Finally bit the Steam bullet and purchased the Legendary Edition. I had a character from Oblivion who had a lot of promise, but never really told me her story because Oblivion wasn't her "home" the way it is Julian's or Tallei's. So I called her to Skyrim, and she took to it like a duck to water. This is definitely her "home," and her story is beginning to unravel to me. It's tough, but I am enjoying really getting to know her in this wild, remote and strange country with so many flaws (can anyone spell racism?) and yet so much going for it.
I took my time playing through the vanilla Skyrim (and both DLC's) with only the UOP's as my mods. It was good to see how things play out, though my character never picked a side in the civil war (and neither did I). There's a lot of room for political intrigue, strategy and plotting that I never quite saw in Oblivion.
There's a few things I don't miss about Oblivion. Goblins (maybe Julian cleared them all out over 200 years ago when Legio VI was posted there?). Imps. But there's a few things I do miss about Oblivion. Normal proportions and postures in the NPC's and PC. And the horses! Oh, for a well-proportioned light breed that won't break down in Skyrim's rugged country! For normal gaits and riding habits! Have you noticed that the Skyrim horses move like dairy cows? They look damn uncomfortable to ride! My vanilla character won't waste 1,000 gold coins on one of those! But thanks to a couple of mods, the animations have been fixed, and now the big ponies' endearing personalities are growing on both of us.
I'm heading back to Skyrim now . . .

I've been playing a fair bit of Binding of Isaac at the moment. Think Robotron, Zelda and Rogue get fused in a hideous teleporter accident and coated in the strange, eldritch ichor that oozes from Edmund McMillen's pen. Yes, the same guy who gave us Carious Weltling, Super Meat Boy, Aether and Time Fcuk. Basically, its gameplay is simple to learn and easy to just pick up and play, and I don't feel that the level generation is as unfair as Spelunky was. If I'd only zagged instead of zigging... Also, the Viscera Cleanup Detail alpha. Basically, the space marines have done their bit, and you're cleaning up after them, space mop and all. For some reason I find mopping up gore and painstakingly picking up bullet casings and body parts oddly relaxing.

That is an interesting way to try and sell your game, create a game where you play a janitor in the aftermath of the fight.

Are we including analogue activities too now in this thread? Entirely digital! I have never swung a golf club in my life. Let alone owned one. QUOTE(Callidus Thorn @ Aug 7 2014, 06:18 AM) Finally making some progress in XCOM: Enemy Within, might manage to survive the first three months of the game, which is when it's at its most brutal.
I have not gotten around to trying the new Xcom game yet. But I have the original two, and I still play them once in a while. They were tough in the beginning too, when you didn't have any armor, and your weapons were limited. Terror From The Deep became really difficult once the Lobstermen appeared. If you didn't have sonic weapons by then, you were screwed. QUOTE(Acadian @ Aug 7 2014, 07:34 AM) QUOTE(SubRosa @ Aug 6 2014, 06:42 PM) I played all 18 holes at Augusta tonight. You're getting to be quite the pixel putter! I can knock those digital skulls around the graveyard with the best of them! This post has been edited by SubRosa: Aug 7 2014, 02:11 PM

You see this, that's me jinxing the game, right there. After that, two missions got all my good soldiers killed. There's no coming back from that... If you didn't have sonic weapons by then, you were screwed. XCOM Enemy Unknown wasn't so bad, but with the Enemy Within expansion they upped the difficulty of the early game. And playing it on "classic" difficulty with ironman mode on for no reloads, you can be literally one wrong move away from disaster. Damn good game, but one that really makes you work for victory. Which is how it should be, of course, with a strategy game. Which is why I keep trying...

There are computer versions of everything worthwhile in life. No point ever leaving the house... Leaving the house is overrated... QUOTE(SubRosa @ Aug 7 2014, 05:22 PM) This morning I played all 18 holes at the TPC of Scottsdale. That was another lovely course. And I shot 5 under par!
That is good! Congrats!
