I've just a while ago started playing Redguard, and I must say, I'm in love.
At first I thought it would be strange to play the pre-defined character of Cyrus, as opposed to my very own character. I thought it may turn out to be more like any title of the Ultima series of RPGs than what I have known to be TES for over 10 years now.
But I soon discovered that I wanted for nothing. The game feels very deep: it has intriguing characters with edges and borders, it has a fascinating, involved story and it has puzzles, which I loved and dearly missed in all games that succeeded Arena (although Arena's weren't very involved, to be fair).
Prior to playing it, I also heard that Redguard's dialog system was annoying and quirky, but I have come to greatly like it. The dialog trees are a much nicer solution than the ones used in DF and MW, and the fact that you can see which topic you already asked about is a great improvement too. Not to mention that the dialog for each character is entirely different. What cookie-cutter characters there are (a few random Redguards in town) are hardly noticable, because there's many more "real" characters.
Yes, it's very different from other TES games. You don't get to create a character, you don't get to collect all kinds of weapons and armour and other gizmos, but it is an entirely fascinating and beautiful game that will get you anamoured with the world of Tamriel even more.
So, if you haven't played it yet, get and play it now! It's fun!
