April's Camp starts tomorrow! Anyone else joining in?

Posted by: Acadian Mar 31 2016, 07:53 PM

I won't be joining you, but I certainly hope you have great fun with it! smile.gif

Posted by: Callidus Thorn Mar 31 2016, 08:09 PM

Oh, wow.

I'd completely forgotten about camp NaNoWriMo! ohmy.gif

Thanks, Acadian! My local group is a riot. We’re sorted into two ‘cabins’ for this event, and so far my bunkmates sound like a rowdy bunch. biggrin.gif

Sounds like you got in under the wire, Callidus! I didn’t get assigned to a cabin until a few minutes ago, so it was white-knuckle time. I still have to decide which project to do, both are bits of ongoing stories. I want to work on both, but I’m debating staying up until midnight to work on the other, so I guess I’ve made my choice. laugh.gif

Posted by: Callidus Thorn Apr 1 2016, 07:27 AM

Heh, I've still got to wait another five hours before getting assigned to a cabin, so I'm not really in yet laugh.gif

Posted by: Grits Apr 28 2016, 06:01 PM

I went to an online write-in with my local group last night and got back on track with my word count. I really got behind while I was away and then recovering from being away. Yikes! But a couple more massive days could get me over the line. Going for it!

Posted by: Grits Nov 1 2016, 08:05 PM

It's November! biggrin.gif

This morning I wrote a Darnand and Lildereth scene. They were stressed. I just wanted to give them a hug. Well, with Darnand it would be more of a fingertip pat from an outstretched arm, but the sentiment is the same.

Posted by: Callidus Thorn Nov 1 2016, 09:00 PM

Yesterday I decided to be stupidly ambitious and set myself a goal of 100K words instead of 50K. But a stiff back has meant I've not been able to get any writing done today. Feeling better than it did this morning though, so I'll be writing tomorrow!

Posted by: Grits Nov 1 2016, 09:10 PM

Yay, good luck with your project! I'm glad your back is feeling better.

I'm using Google Docs for the first time for just my own writing. I use it when I have to collaborate, but I can't believe I haven't tried it alone before. I can use whatever device is at hand and then later paste into Scrivener. This way I can't get distracted by going back and checking things that are in my vast archives. Write now, check later. So far, so good!

Posted by: Grits Nov 1 2017, 07:55 PM

Saddle up, it's November 1!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Acadian Nov 1 2017, 08:01 PM

Already??? *perks long ears to hear busy typing from Gritsland*

Posted by: Grits Nov 2 2017, 03:32 AM

Thanks, Acadian! There was a lot of busy typing this evening, I hope your ears didn’t get tired! It’s an Abiene story that fits into the long pause in Jerric's. She finally goes on a road trip with Dar-Ma, and… biggrin.gif

Posted by: haute ecole rider Nov 3 2017, 08:59 PM

Couldn’t help but notice that in your screenie of the month Jerric is riding up to the Honeymoon Cottage. You know you are always welcome to Argis and Alise’s home, but please don’t forget to knock! Or Jerric just might see things involving whips and chains and dog collars … ::0:

Posted by: Grits Nov 3 2017, 09:57 PM

laugh.gif Well, it would not be his first rodeo. tongue.gif

Posted by: Callidus Thorn Nov 5 2017, 11:21 PM

I got a bad start this time around, but I've got plenty of time to make up for that at least. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Grits Nov 8 2017, 09:34 PM

Yep, the second week only just started, and you're in good company! Two of my friends trashed their first idea mid-week and started over.

My local group has a couple of super-fast writers who make me feel like my fingers must be taped together when I hear them typing, but the rest of us just go one sentence at a time. They add up. biggrin.gif

Aw, I'm sure you're doing fine, hon. smile.gif

Posted by: Grits Nov 5 2018, 11:02 PM

Strong start this year, probably because I love my story. Lildereth has taken over. I haven't even gotten to a Jerric part yet. laugh.gif

Posted by: monkeyemoness Nov 5 2018, 11:26 PM

Hmmmm, so I don't have much experience writing, but I've been planning on something for a while and decided that this month would be a good time to get started. If all goes well I'll at least finish one part of it.

Posted by: Grits Nov 6 2018, 12:34 PM

Outstanding! Writing gives you more experience writing, so there you go. biggrin.gif I hope your project goes very well!

Posted by: Grits Nov 30 2018, 08:45 PM

monkey, I hope your month went well.

Mine was the most productive yet, and I can't wait to dive into editing. Whoop!

Posted by: monkeyemoness Dec 1 2018, 04:08 AM

Oh, that's great!

I think I got into it pretty late, but I managed to reach my goal. At about 11-thousand words, I managed to finish the first part of my project. About five minutes ago.

Just the push I needed to write the rest. :U

Posted by: Grits Dec 1 2018, 02:11 PM

Excellent, I'm glad to hear it!

The story world has become my favorite Elder Scrolls experience. biggrin.gif

Posted by: monkeyemoness Dec 7 2018, 01:55 AM

In spite of previous attempts, some from many years ago, I'm still very new at this.

That said, after the struggle I went through to hammer out the 11k or so words last month, I'm finding it easier to write everything after it.

It could be that I'm essentially rewriting some of what I mentioned writing years ago, but even when I had an idea of what I wanted to write, it always seemed to be stuck. Couldn't really just...drop it onto the page, y'know?

I dunno, but I do remember how it inspired me to create through other means, and I love it. :v

Posted by: Grits Dec 7 2018, 05:57 PM

That’s awesome. I love it when after a struggle things suddenly make more sense.

This year I saved some scenes that I have been itching to write for the end of the month. It worked very well to do the harder stuff first and make those decisions early. Then the rest flowed from it. (I write out of order, sometimes a lot out of order.)

Anyone else get annoyed when we have all sorts of ideas and stories in our heads but can just get it out there?

I have made a rough draft of a story I wanted to write about a young peasant girl living in the times of witch persecutions by Stendarr’s faithful but I’m just too lazy to get it on here.

That and I’m in desperate need of a new computer tongue.gif

KEK

Where the hell have you been, Dee Dee???

And yeah, I feel you on that first part.

I was actually thinking of joining NNWM this month for the first time, see what’s all the fuss you guys are getting sweaty for yearly, but after a measly 2.K word count I gave up. Not my tea, tbh. All the best for all of you who joined tho.

Yep. I have a Scrivener project that’s just story ideas. That way I can jot down the shiny new whatever and know that it will be there when I come back to it.

I hear you about the new computer. My old laptop just died. I have a friend who swears by google docs, though. She uses that for all of her writing.

Uleni, I’m glad you tried it!

Well, thanks for the offer my friend. I bought a new laptop today lol.

I'm doing great, just been working on other projects so I haven't had the time to visit the forums often. But now I've made more time. I don't think I'll do the NNWM but I'm entertaining the idea.

Ohh that sounds like a reliable tool. I see where your imagination comes from in a way smile.gif

Hmm, I'm more of a word doc person lol. But like I mentioned, I finally got that done and now I can write again. Eventually . . . procrastination plays a role here too. mellow.gif

Posted by: monkeyemoness Feb 22 2019, 10:59 PM

So I realize it's been MONTHS since the deadline but while I haven't really reached the 50k mark, I DID reach my original goal before I cut it down. (It's at around 40k words now. The word count might either go up or down when editing, tbh)

I've been writing on and off, and I get the feeling that part of why it took me so long to get to this point was that I just really HAVE to write in a linear fashion. I've been getting out of the habit recently, but like, I feel like I end up repeating myself too much if I don't?

Granted, the point of the first draft is for it to exist, so I guess that doesn't matter. I've reached the point where I had a solid plan for the story so maybe I'll experiment from here on out.

April means Camp NaNoWriMo, whoop! Time to get that project organized. All of our local write-ins are cancelled of course, but we have moved them online.

Posted by: Burnt Sierra Nov 1 2020, 04:41 PM

Anyone doing NaNoWriMo this year? Must admit I've been playing around with an idea for it, wondering if anyone else is. What's the old Garfield expression? "Misery loves company" wink.gif

Oh, and hi everyone!

Posted by: Grits Nov 1 2020, 07:04 PM

I am! If I get 2,000 words in on my writing days I will get to 50k before Thanksgiving. I have done more prep this year than ever. Hopefully it will pay off!

And hi!! It's great to see you!! happy.gif

A couple of weeks away from the April Camp NaNoWriMo. For those unsure how that differs from the November one, here’s a brief explanation from their website:

“The key differences between Camp NaNoWriMo and our November writing challenge are that during Camp, you can set your own word-count goal (you’re not locked into 50,000 words!), and you can officially tackle any kind of writing project, novel or not.â€

On a personal level, my writing (at least consistently) dropped off a cliff several years ago, when I ended up taking my mother in when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Finding time to write during that period was pretty much impossible. After she passed away in 2020, I just couldn’t seem to find the motivation to restart. It’s only over the last few months I’ve come to realise just how much I miss writing. Not just the final creation, but the actual process itself. So, when I hit 50 (no midlife crisis, nope, promise. Although I have caught myself casting admiring glances at zippy red sports cars recently. Fear not though, I’ve impressively resisted the urge!) a week ago, I promised myself that I was going to focus my time and energy back into it.

And there’s a NaNoWriMo conveniently timed just around the corner! Yay to synchronicity!

My personal plan for this isn’t to write a full-size novel/story, but instead is to write several short stories, to reprogram my brain and fingers back into the habit again.

So, if anyone is planning on doing this already, wasn’t aware it existed but is curious, can’t get the image of zippy red spots cars out of their head, then feel free to join me.

Posted by: Acadian Mar 16 2024, 08:10 PM

Best wishes, Burnt. I hope this project helps you rekindle your writing mojo. smile.gif

This does sound rather neat. Is everything online? Not that I have time to get involved now, but it's something to consider for the future.
