It was just as predicted. Kayla gave in to her sympathy and pulled Draken away from the cell and out into the dark, damp corridor. Draken limped on as she pulled him toward an escape route, rushing through the cave in the shadow.

The evil, inferal weapon that was Dawnbreaker began to glow, mimicking the bright tyrannical light that sun at his presence as if it were alive. As if Meridia herself embodied the blade and groaned at her servant being absent-minded in the great peril she was facing.

Draken saw them coming, but he did nothing. Afterall, what could a half-weak nobleman do when faced with such a situation? Right now the mask he wore was that of Drathan. Draken Decumus can wait a few seconds longer.

Draken can wait even though the savages wrapped their arms around his neck and shoulder to drag him back. He can wait as they bit him, hit him and struck him over and over while he could only grunt. He can wait as the undead-murdering fiend that Kayla was dragged by her hair and retaliated with swears and kicks and fire.

The men guided by their hunger and lust and murderous desires left him there in favor of the one who struggled. To them, they must have thought, this won't put up a fight. He's lost the will to live. We'll deal with him after she's detained.

Brutes.

"Do something!" Kayla shouted with a plea, and Draken could try to muster a sympathetic and frightened nod, or try to move a muscle to help her. But instead, for a fraction of a second, he was encouraged to let her die. A wounded ego that was his would love to see Meridia's champion bested by a bunch of shirtless apes dressed in the skin of men.

Then, like a cornered animal, she pounced and fought and killed them.

My, how graphic, she's a true vulgarian.

Though she was alive, she was injured and asking for help. Draken climbed weakly to his feet, saber in hand. The auburn-hair altmer crawled toward her pack, with her wounds calling to him.

"I will help," Draken said. "Don't fret. We shall get out of this situation soon enough.

I know I will.

For centuries, taking a life has never been difficult. But when he first began? His first kill was terryfing. Taking the life of an innocent was harder than say, taking his own.

He looks at Kayla and doesn't see an innocent woman, but a threat. A murderous threat that would sooner kill him than strike a conversation if she knew what he was. Who knows how many vampires she murdered with that malicious sword? Though vile, as some of his lesser brethren may be, they still represented the everlasting truth of the food chain and the order-of-dominance. Cattle could never understand this.

Without Dawnbreaker, he might let her live. There would be no purpose in her death. But as long as that blade sings to her of his identity and the identity of those he holds dear, all is in danger. He can't let her live. He once again faces the test of selflessness—To preserve the Order and to destroy threats. To be vilified by others is far from difficult. To be branded a monster is just as simple as breathing. It's easy to be a clean-cut hero killing monsters. There's vanity in it. But Draken knows there can be no room for vanity or pride in being despised.

And though his clansmen will not see this glorious heroic deed, nor will the other members of the tribe, Draken doesn't complain. What he does take pride in is knowing he struck a blow against evil.

He raises his blade she reaches her pack, and just as he thinks, Now Kayla . . . you will die, more brethren come in. Four of them alongside the human, Arentus.

He doesn't have time for this.

He summons all the power of the mundane magics of man, and hurls two bright fireballs that glowed like twin suns trapped within a cave. The orange balls explode on impact with two of the men, and the blast carries off throughout the area.

The walls of the mine, weakened by the blast, caves in. Draken, with a burst of supernatural power, leaps away from harm as the stones come down. Him and Dawnbreaker's wielder are seperated.

The dust floats and the debris is all he sees aside from two silhouttes he makes out in the shadow. It was time to heal old wounds.

He looks back and sees that Kayla is just a wall of rock away from him, and though he's bitter he smiles in realization that he can finally, for this quick and precious moment, take off his mask.

Kayla's hand had just slipped into her pack when she heard the blast of fire. Her instincts tingled and she quickly grabbed Dawnbreaker, rolling away from the larger pile of rocks falling, but was struck in the leg by a stray rock. She cried out in pain and gripped her leg as the dust settled.

She dragged herself to the wall opposite of the pile of rubble and leaned back, resting her head against the cold wall. she heard nothing on the other side of the rubble.

"Drathen!" She called, her voice carrying pitifully as her strength waned. "I'm alive. I'm gonna get help, okay? I can't dig through the rocks!"

She lit a ball of light in her hand and glanced around. The cavern had a new wall, alright. Whoever threw that fireball hit the wall, resulting in a cave-in. Assuming Drathen wasn't dead, Kayla intended on helping him. But she was in no condition to help him out like this.

She searched momentarily for her pack, and saw a strap sticking out from under the rubble.

"No, no no no!" she groaned. She crawled over to her pack and yanked. Nothing. She suddenly felt wetness on her hands, and saw liquid pooled beneath her slender hands.

They broke!

Draken forced Kayla's call out of his mind. They were seperated by a wall of stone. Her time will come soon enough, but first thing is first. He'll have to stomp on the remaining insects.

There was debris everywhere, all over his clothes and inside and even in his nose and mouth and in the corners of his eyes. Though the dust did not settle, he could see in this darkness as if light shun through. He was on his feet before two of the brethren even managed to register what happened.

The nearest one was already wounded, and his fate was sealed.

Draken thrust his fist up into the air. Five forks of blue lightning arced out from above his head to devour the screaming man, cooking him alive. Shrieking in pain, he danced and twitched like a puppet on azure strings for several seconds before his smoking husks collapsed on the ground.

The second creature was inspired by fear at seeing his fellow burnt alive by such eye-blinding display. He weakly stumbled to his feet and fled over the piles of turned stone and shattered rock.

Draken didn’t give him a chance to even see what was coming.

With unseen force and confined power, he picked the man up while standing afar and slammed his back into the wall of the cave, pulverizing his spine. With the same manner he took care of the other back in the room, he tossed the man with even greater force into one of the sharp protruding stones, snapping his neck as he was drove facedown into the dirt. His corpse twitched once, then never moved again.

The nobleman sucked in the air around him, and released a long, deep exhale. He felt rejuvenated. As a servant and product of Molag Bal, he relished in the vanquishing of his foes. He gains powers from their suffering. But it must be balanced, at least for him. Killing for sadistic pleasure without profit or gain is the works of a fool.

There was but one man that was alive and he was only three feet away. He couldn’t run. His legs were broken. He couldn’t move his fingers, for they were crushed. But he was still alive enough to see Draken pick up his saber, pull it from its home and march toward him.

“The Deep Ones,” Draken began. “I would consider making an investment in this town. I believed that this place had redeemed itself from cult practices. That whatever chaos began here would end with the death cries of your kin. I was a fool to believe that old wounds would not heal.” He paced around the man, sword angled down to his feet. “I have no desire to profit from a town when I am not aware of its secrets. Where are the Deep Ones?”

The Deep Ones’ identities were only known by the townspeople, and only a select few knew of their exact location. They lived far below the earth where artificial caverns had to be constructed to get to them. With this cave-in, that was unlikely now.

Arentus wheezed blood from his lips and tried with great effort to move his legs but failed. His eyes fell to Draken’s foot. “You’ll die in here with me, outsider. This cave will be your grave. Even then you’re not worthy to lie in Hackdirt’s tomb.”

Knowing he wouldn’t be of help, and eager to take care of other matters, Draken walked over to the wounded Arentus, shoes stepping over already broken fingers. He cocked his head, and then shielded his blade.

"You're life has no worth, mortal. You walk about aimlessly as a child without much of a thought to how this world works," he frowned. "But every life, no matter how dull, can sustain another."

A red glow surrounded his ringed fingers, and Draken stood over Arentus. His eyes bloodshot face pale and body cold. Blood caked his face and arms, but he looked the same cold and unforgiving man he always was.

The crimson glow fell upon Arentus, his life essence violently sucked out of his body, aging him a thousand years in only a few seconds. Muscles and tendons atrophied in an instant; his skin withered and shrank, pulling tight across his bones. His eyes and tongue shriveled, reducing him into a mummified husk before his desiccated flesh crumbled away, leaving only a skeletal remain and few pieces of hair and tattered clothes.

And so the man becomes his home . . .

Kayla heard the pained screams of men from the other side of the rock wall, faintly. Her chest contracted in pain as she cried out.

"No!"

She leaned back, her head resting against the cold wall of the cave. A deeper darkness than what she was already in edged its way into her vision as she began to lose consciousness.

Drathen is dead, she thought numbly. I failed to save him.

Her breath hitched in her throat as her wound began to throb, bringing her back. She tore the dirtied hem of her shirt, ripping it all the way around and balled it up. She grit her teeth and took in a deep breath, then let it out as she pushed in the cloth, nearly effectively closing the wound off enough to stop blood from leaking out. She braced herself and stood up, her hand on her side. The tip of Dawnbreaker dragged on the ground of she limped to her pack.

Her clothes were intact, just crushed. They were soaked with her spilled potions as well. Kayla let a few large rocks roll off on their own before she began to pull her crushed back from the rubble. She found her coinpurse, the Brethren left it untouched. Lucky for me.

She shouldered her pack, crossing the strap across her chest and began to limp, a ball of light lighting her way as she navigated her own way though. She came across a ladder, leading upwards into what was hopefully the wide, open air.

She looked up momentarily, bracing herself.

This is gonna hurt.

She grit her teeth and put Dawnbreaker under her arm and began to climb, putting one grimy, bare foot on the rickety old ladder as she pulled herself up with two toned and fatigued arms. There was a terrifying moment, halfway up the ascent, where one of the rungs broke, causing her to shriek in pain and terror. Luckily she'd caught herself and continued upwards.

She unlatched the trap door and pushed it open, breathing in the stale, musky odor of a basement. Her heart wrenched in disappointment as she pulled herself up, groaning audibly, holding her side after she tossed Dawnbreaker onto the solid ground of the basement.

She rested, panting as she leaned against a crate. She pulled out the bloodied cloth and wrung it out coating her hands in blood. She balled up the cloth once again and unceremoniously shoved t back into her wound, clenching her teeth. After a moment, she weakly stood up and climbed the stairs of the basement.

She stumbled into a kitchen, the stove still warm, dirty dishes still in the washbasin. Her stomach growled, but she ignored it as she limped from the kitchen, Dawnbreaker's tip dragging on the earthen floor, making a line behind her.

"What are you doing here?!"

The red-haired woman's fright turned into rage. "You're supposed to be dead The Deep Ones were to devour your heart!"

"My wha-AUGH!"

Kayla blocked the kitchen knife just in time, the loss of blood making her slower than normal, but still faster than the woman.

"I tried to save your kids! why are you-"

"YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE THE CAVERNS!"

---

Kayla groaned and once again limped her way towards the outside world. Behind her, the burnt and bloodied body of the woman who had lured her here under false pretenses lay facedown in a pool of her own blood. Kayla once again held her side as she limped out of town, the trees obscuring the way to the city. The early morning forest was quiet, the birds eerily silent as they watched the lone Altmer limp and gasp her way towards the stoned walls of Chorrol City.

Healer...I need a healer.

She reached the gates, the guards helping her to her feet when she stumbled.

"Hackdirt!" she gasped. "Hackdirt!"

She was escorted quickly to the chapel for healing.

The black mist floated below the caverns over the remains of the dead brethren. Formless and invisible in the gloom, the mist traveled through the cracks and crevices of the tunnels and founds its way through the mines, at last reaching flying through a small head-sized hole in the well and out to the center of the town. The mist settled somewhere behind a broken-down wall and took the shape of a man.

The townspeople were out and about, mingling with each other about the loud noise that happened underneath. Draken had half a mind to leap in there and kill them all but that would be far too unwise and there was no purpose in their deaths. Nothing he could profit from other than personal gratification and petty revenge. That would be unacceptable to a man with such principle.

Making use of his stealth training, Draken blended with the shadows and crept alongside the broken down walls toward his horse. It was twilight. The sun was just sometime away from rising and he hasn’t fed.

“Aye, there was blood tracks from the caverns that led to her house. One of the prisoners escaped and killed her. The other I reckon is still under there.”

Draken’s face morphed into a scowl. She’s still alive.

The sense of responsibility overcame his desire to escape. He rushed to his steed, mounted on him and rode out of the town. While faint to the poor eyes of the peasants, Draken could detect the traces of blood all over the ground. He followed it, sticking toward the roads but otherwise using the very faint smell to lure him to the source.

He’d registered Kayla’s red waters when she was wounded in the caverns. He knew it belonged to her. All there is the matter of time. She’s wounded, surely, severely so judging by the loss of blood. Like wounded prey, he could run her down with his horse and kill her.

And so he goaded his horse into a gallop until he reached a part where his horse could not go. He dismounted, unsheathed his sword and marched into the woods where traces of her blood stood as evidence of her passage amongst the bushes and ferns.

Then, he sensed it. Guards. A small group of them coming from the end of the road from Chorrol. While many feet away that they couldn’t see his horse, Draken saw them and heard them coming.

“Hackdirt, she says. Never trusted those people. We'll finally be able to bring em justice.”

They are going to investigate a disturbance in Hackdirt. She’s safe behind the walls.

He swore silently. He couldn’t go into town. People knew him, and so did Kayla. If she so much as links him to the Hackdirt incident, it would raise unwanted questions. Draken was wise enough to know the innkeeper in Hackdirt believed he perished, and would cover any mention or tracks of Drathen at all costs and he was content to leave it that way. If the guards saw him now, his blood-stained clothes, dust-covered arms and grime-caked face they would surely inquire his whereabouts.

That, and the unfortunate reality that the sun was going to rise. The odds were against him. He had to retreat.

Draken rushed back to his horse and climbed, and decided it was best to leave for now.

“Hyaa!” he said, bringing the horse into acceleration as he raced the opposite direction of the road and away from the proximity of Chorrol. He’d have to find a way to kill Kayla. Surely a woman with such a sword would not go unnoticed despite her best efforts.

I’ll see to it that someone will find her. Perhaps hire that talented Lycanthropic woman once more. A gifted killer like her could get the job done. Her reputation has never failed her before.

A brilliant red glow came on the horizon, clearly visible past the trees, reminded him of a much more urgent issue. After creeping him for what felt like minutes, dawn was arriving. Was it just his mind, or could he already feel the heat upon his skin?

This is a serious problem.

The sky above was growing brighter by each passing second. Draken squinted at the encroaching radiance. The daylight obviously pained his eyes, making it hard for him to see. But even still he could view things in a harsh and brighter light and the next sight he saw brought hope to his heart. Nearby was a lone inn on the side of the road. The sign read: The Wobbly Goblet.

There. He would make his stay there before the Tyranny of the Sun reduced him to a steaming pile of ash and blood.

The sun rose a bit, rays spreading like hot fingers that crept past the safety of the trees to shine on him and his horse. As the light hit, Draken heard a sound like meat sizzling in a fire. He yanked his hand away from a stray beam of light and forced his horse ride further near the shadows. He saw that his knuckles were burned bright red. Wisps of smoke rising from the scorched skin. But the sun, hungry for presence, rose even higher.

Draken ducked his head, trying to keep his face in the shade, but a ray of bright sunlight struck against his cheek. His smooth white skin blistered instantly, and he bit scream of pain and frustration.

He rushed his animal to the stable and immediately dismounted, rays of light still not yet reaching that part of the area. In haste, he spoke to the Bosmer and told him to take great care of his horse. When asked about the burns, Draken informed him of a mage attack somewhere in the forest. An ambush and that he barely escaped with his life. When asked if he needed assistance, Draken raised his hand and said: “I am fine.”

With that, he entered the Wobbly Goblet, finally away from the eyes and fiery fingers of Magnus.
