Chorrol.com _ Oblivion _ Gog Oblivion

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 19 2019, 12:12 AM

I bought Oblivion from Gog.com a while ago, and finally got around to installing it. It comes with the executable already pre-patched to 4gb aware. It also comes with all the dlcs. They install automatically with the game.

I tried it with my old Morroblivion files, and they work! For some reason Morroblivion had stopped working with my old GOTY disc install of Oblivion. So I think I might give that a try sometime soon.

I also got my Martial Arts for Oblivion mod mostly done today. As I did with Morrowind, I took a dagger and changed the mesh to a ring, and renamed it Martial Arts. Works like a charm. I just wish there was some way I could change it to use the hand to hand animations instead of the dagger animations. But I am not sure that is even possible.

I also created a shield the same way, but have not tested it yet to see how it works.

And now Morroblivion CTDs every time I try to load a save again.

Ah Ha! I got it working. The problem - somehow - was that after my initial install I added the Morroblivion files into OMOD files for OBMM. For some reason those files coming out of an OMOD broke the game. I deleted the OMODs, and copied the files over directly. Viola! It works again.

All right very nice with the technical fix there.

It's funny because when I was new to PC modding, I installed MMM, which I had heard about for years, and I really wanted all these extra monsters in my game. MMM was the first really BIG mod I added, and since it came with an OMOD installer (something like this) I got it in my game through the OMOD. Well, everything worked fine except I kept seeing all these *STOP! I'm A MISSING MESH!* signs in my game.

Long story short, a frienmemy I had in the old Beth forums (him and I sparred a bit publicly... you know how those forums were) is the one who diagnosed the problem. "Forget about OBMM. Just copy/paste all the files directly into the Data folder." And this worked. smile.gif It's because I assumed modding had to be complicated for it to work back in those days. I didn't expect a simple copy/paste would do the trick.

Are you gonna be posting pics SR? I am curious what Morroblivion looks like, or if it's any different from the base game.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 20 2019, 02:13 AM

Morroblivion looks mostly like Oblivion, since that is the game engine. But it does use some textures like those of Morrowind. So it is a blend of the two. I played it a long time ago, and there should still be some pics from then, way back in my pics topic.

I mostly have Oblivion and Morroblivion going. I spent most of today and yesterday just working on faces for January. I forgot how hard it was to make a decent face in Oblivion. So many of them come out like potatoes! laugh.gif I ended up with one that was ok, but I still wish I could do better.

I played a bit with January in Morrowind. It is a really pleasant feeling of nostalgia, both for Oblivion and for Morrowind. The game engine is Oblivion of course. But they really did a fine job of using Morrowind textures and usually meshes to recreate the original Morrowind. It does look just like Morrowind. The original music is there as well. So far it all seems exactly the same. I found the same dungeons around Seyda Neen. Tarhiel fell from the sky with his scrolls of Icarian Flight. My new Martial Arts mod is working fine too. Though I might still take some time to work on the icon, maybe make the outline transparent.

One mod for Morroblivion I have found to be extremely helpful is the Portal to Vvardenfell. It gives you a spell that creates a portal between Vvardenfell and Cyrodiil. I used that to travel to the Imperial City to get some modded items whose containers I had placed in the IC. I also bought some spells there, and used my Mystic Emporium Enchanting mod to create some new spells. Then I used the portal to return to Morrowind and get back going.

The only thing I am really having problems with is the Morrowind map, which is kind of missing. I am going to have to look into that tomorrow.

I always create faces directly in the creaton kit, then set them as a preset. It's easier to create faces this way, because changes are easier to revert compared to the default creator.

So to run MorrOblivion, you fire up Oblivion and then use a portal to enter Vvardenfell?

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 22 2019, 01:35 PM

I have tried creating faces in the construction set, but they never look the same in the game as they do in the cs. Of course that is the problem with using showracemenu in the game. It looks good when I am creating it, but looks different when I am playing and use TFC to look at my character.

Morroblivion is basically just a set of .esps and their related meshes and textures. There is one main file, plus some extras. If you turn the main file on, starting a new game automatically starts you in Morrowind. The portal to Vvardefell is one of those extra mods that allows you to travel back and forth between the Morrowind world and the regular Oblivion game world.

I did get my map issue fixed. It turns out I was using two map improvement mods at the same time. I deleted one, and now it is fine.

There is a new version of OBSE out - version 21. https://obse.silverlock.org/. There is a special obse_loader.exe file for the Gog version of the game.

Yeah I had to have it when I was messing around with My GOG version of Oblivion a few weeks ago.

Hmmm, I'm considering getting the GOG version of Oblivion for my current rig, since it doesn't have an optical drive. I was pleased to see it will run on Windows 10/11,which I'm currently using. But it's been years since I played Oblivion, let alone did any modding for it.

Any recommendations/suggestions for a fresh install of Oblivion? I'm using Vortex to manage mods for Skyrim, and I've noticed there are GOG versions of some of these mods. Wondering if it's the same for Oblivion, or will it be different because Oblivion uses a different file structure than the Steam version of Skyrim?

Any advice, tips, and mod suggestions would be helpful! Thanks in advance!

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 6 2023, 09:30 AM

I use GOG Oblivion and it runs beautifully on Win10. You don't need any of the mods that "bring it into the 21st century" like the 4GB patch. They do nothing because it's already patched. It is also partly bug-fixed, so what I read about some doors not opening or other silly things - they just never happen to me. I am not running the Unofficial Patch either which is supposed to fix all this - I think the GOG version already has the biggest bugs fixed. This is just my suspicion though.

I don't know about Vortex, but I see a lot of people using it on Nexus, including with GOG Oblivion, so I suppose you should be fine.

Regarding Steam, I have not seen a single mod that was exclusively for Steam or that would not work for Steam. It generally seems to work, although I do see comments here and there that some people need to do special tricks to ge things working properly on Steam. This mostly has to do with names of folders and resource files - Linux is case-sensitive while Windows is mostly not.

OBSE is now on Nexus, it's called xOBSE because I think it's been picked up by other people. The latest version is 22.9. I've had some strange CTDs with it, for me 22.6 seems to work better. But I could never trace those CTDs to anything specific, so it could be something entirely different. Try it and see. If you drop below 22.6, you may find a few of the most recent mods not working properly because they use features introduced after that, mostly events. On the other hand, there is a nasty inventory handling bug in 22.7 and 22.8 which they've been trying to fix (again) in 22.9, don't know if they managed. One of my mods suffers from it, but remarkably not in my game, whichever version of OBSE I use. Like most elusive bugs, you just have to hit it.

But for the most part it is all nice and stable. smile.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 6 2023, 10:35 AM

I have been using the Gog Oblivion on Windows 10 for a few years now, and can say the same. It works fine.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 6 2023, 06:48 PM

Thank you both, Lena and Sage Rose, for the quick replies!

I hit a wall with my Skyrim playthrough since Bethsoft updated the CC/Mods section Monday - now the game won’t launch with outdated .dll files. After all the work I put into this mod build I’m kinda pissed. So it’s a matter of waiting for the last five or six mods to update their .dll files (probably over the weekend). I’m thinking of downloading Oblivion from GOG today and getting started on that one.

Have either of you used Oblivion Character Overhaul 2 (OCO2)? I gave the original one a whirl over ten years ago but didn’t care for how it gave every Imperial male a boxer’s nose. This time around I’m a little put off by how Elven faces are managed - I don’t like that line over the brows - it is managed much better in both Skyrim and ESO.

I also saw the earlier discussion of OR, which makes me want to try it again. But I think I’ll try OB without any visual enhancements and see what I like and don’t like.

Is Robert’s Body still the go to body replacer for those who want more realistic bodies (i.e. no boob jobs, thanks)?

I haven’t decided yet on using Slof’s again for the horses . . .

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 6 2023, 08:10 PM

I tried OCO2 and quickly turned it off. Those aesthetics don't appeal to me, I prefer potato heads. biggrin.gif There are a number of new mods specifically for potato heads, you could look at those. But personally, I just stick with vanilla. It is a matter of taste though, each to his own.

Body replacer - Robert's seems popular. But... yeah, you got it - I stick with vanilla. smile.gif

Regarding texture replacers, I found it depends on your PC. I have an old one and when I tried several texture replacers, they looked nothing like on the screenshots and frankly looked much worse than vanilla on my PC. So you'll need to experiment.

OR: here it depends on the version. The latest version does much more than graphics - it does memory management. This is the only way for me to run Morroblivion and not have it crash every 10 minutes due to overload. But the big disadvantage (for me, anyway) is that it forces you into HDR. My hardward doesn't do it very well, the contrasts are much too high and I prefer Bloom. So again, depends on your PC.

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 6 2023, 09:33 PM

I have never used OCO2, so I cannot comment on it.

I use Bab Final for bodies, and High Resolution Faces for Robert's Body. The latter is purely a texture file replacement to smooth out face textures. So it does not conflict with Bab.

I use Cute Orc Head Replacer, to remove the pig-like heads for orcs.

Finally Corean and Ren's Hairs.

Posted by: Renee Dec 6 2023, 09:47 PM

Nay on the subject of OCO2 from me. I'm good at working with potatoes. tongue.gif

QUOTE

I also use Roberts, and back it up with Robert's Better Necklines. I think that's what it's called. I use Roberts with all my females except one gal. I use HGEC for her. Nice to have all those body-type options. smile.gif

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 6 2023, 10:35 PM

Now I’ve run into a new problem - the Nine is definitely not smiling on me!

When I start a new game and go through the character screen, it looks like the game won’t recognize my keyboard - I am unable to type in the character name to complete the set up.

I’ve tried running the game .exe and OBSE.exe in Compatibility Mode for Win 8 and in Administrator Mode.

Tired plugging in the wireless keyboard into the USB, tried unplugging the PS4 controller.

All without success. Dang. Not sure what to do next.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 6 2023, 10:39 PM

Reboot and try again? biggrin.gif

Actually, I had something like that. You say you're using the PS4 controller, but Oblivion doesn't support controllers (properly). Are you also using some utility like Xpadder to map your keyboard to the controller? If so, try turning it off. Also, make sure that you have the controller disabled in Oblivion.ini - search for Joystick.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 6 2023, 11:09 PM

Tried both suggestions - works now! Thanks!

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 7 2023, 02:50 PM

I recall having to have something called Archive Invalidation enabled for Oblivion to run. Is that still necessary?

Reason I ask is the game CTDs every time I click on a container. I can’t even get Captain Renault’s weapons.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 7 2023, 03:06 PM

Archive invalidation is not necessary. Files in your Oblivion\Data folder already override any BSAs. I think it may have been a GOG fix, or may be even an Oblivion fix from Bethesda itself.

Did you install a lot of mods? OBSE? OBSE mods? Perhaps you're hitting that OBSE inventory bug that I mentioned, or possibly it is something entirely different. I'd say try the game without any mods at all, apart from OBSE and get it to work. This way you'll have the OBSE version that agrees with your platform. Then add mods.

Posted by: Renee Dec 7 2023, 05:26 PM

What Wolf says. Archive invalidation is needed for some Fallout 3 & NV mods (especially some textures), but I don't recall needing it for Oblivion.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 7 2023, 05:39 PM

All I have at this point is OBSE.

I'm not adding any mods until I can get vanilla Oblivion to work. It's a challenge on my particular rig, since I'm running it in Parallels on my Mac. Skyrim runs beautifully (and currently I have 400 mods on this play through), but Oblivion, being an older game, is more challenging. I can get past the character creation menu and start the Prison sequence, but as soon as I try to click on Renault or one of the Mythic Dawn characters to loot them I get the CTD.

Something's missing, that's for sure.

Posted by: Renee Dec 7 2023, 05:45 PM

Cripes, this is happening while the game is vanilla??? ohmy.gif

I have no idea. Not that this should matter, but you installed outside of Program Files, correct? Let's start there. Also, you are using a controller (as do I, although my controller is Xbox-styled). What happens if you use the keyboard: space bar? Or whatever PC players use to activate something?

Edit: Whenever I've hit a walll like this in the past (and believe me, I've hit a LOT of walls) where nobody else seems to know what the prob is, I usually start Googling like mad. There might be that one obscure post on some dead website from 10 years ago in which somebody also had that same exact problem. And fixed it.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 7 2023, 06:11 PM

I would take another step back then: delete OBSE. Start completely vanilla and get your keyboard and controller to work. And be able to loot containers. When your vanilla game works, then add OBSE.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 7 2023, 09:07 PM

@Renee: I had to disable my controller because the game wasn’t recognizing my keyboard in chargen

I will try without OBSE first, then try again with OBSE if the game plays okay. May have to reinstall OBSE if the unmodded game plays fine.

Wish me luck!

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 7 2023, 10:50 PM

I play with a wired Xbox 360 controller handled by Joy2Key. It works a treat, all keyboard functions still work as well because as far as Oblivion is concerned, I'm playing with a keyboard and mouse.

Posted by: Renee Dec 8 2023, 02:55 AM

G'luck, rider!

I use X-padder. 🎮 But I also use the keyboard & mouse sometimes, mostly for menu stuff. Can't remember how I have my Oblivion.ini set up, whether bUseJoystick is 0 or 1.

Here's a trick (and sorry for off-topic). With pure keys & mouse, character speed is walk or run, there is no variable movement. Xpadder recommends we have our joystick OFF while starting the game, and we're not supposed to turn it on until the opening screen finishes loading. Well one day I forgot. My controller was ON. Once I was in the game I realized I could walk or run with variable movement!

I actually have Oblivion from GOG. Had to buy the game from GoG just to get the DLC, which did not come with the Anthology disc. There. On topic.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 8 2023, 06:24 AM

I did re-enable the controller because I really prefer playing Oblivion with the controller versus the keyboard/mouse combo. I have the PS4 DualSense controller plugged into my Mac, and with the controller re-enabled it runs fine.

I'm using Northern UI, which has a couple of additional mods to use with the controller (including changing the Xbox keys to the PS4 keys, so I know which is which), and it is really smooth.

I did download Kvatch Rebuilt and Reclaiming Sancre Tor (which I have never, ever played, though I've had it as part of my mod load out for several playthroughs). And I found a couple of texture packs including one that retextures the vanilla horses.

I'm sticking close to the vanilla feeling, and it's not as heavily modded as my Skyrim game, but it's been fun. I just lost six hours getting my Breton mage started - still at Level 1 and already has the Anvil and Skingrad mages recommendations! She also found the parts for the Orrery.

I used Arthmoor's Alternate Start mod - it's based off his Live Another Life for Skyrim, and I chose to have Tallei start in Anvil as an immigrant. Unlike Julian, she doesn't feel the need to stay in one place and help everyone - she's anxious to get to the Arcane University and start her studies there LOL. Healer class, Mage birthsign, only a dagger for a weapon. Solely magic, which is new for me.

I'm being flooded by memories playing this game - so much goodness coming back to me. It's going to tide me over until my remaining Skyrim mods get updated for the new version.

Does anyone use an eat/sleep/rest mod like the Survival mode in Skyrim? I had one but can't recall what it was, and would prefer to use a more current one for Oblivion (as it would be more likely supported). But I would like to have to carry food around, and maybe camping gear too.

Thanks to everyone for helping me figure out the issues getting this game started. Now that I'm six hours in, I'm super happy with the way it's running on my M1 Mac.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 8 2023, 01:06 PM

Did you get to the bottom of what was causing CTDs when trying to loot a container? Or did that problem simply go away once you backtracked?

Also, nice to hear that it is all ironed out now! biggrin.gif And on a Mac, too!

Regarding survival mods, I use https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/36795 in combination with https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/24604. The second one is about combat primarily, but it also influences your overall condition. I find they make for a very nice combination without getting in the way of playing. smile.gif

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 8 2023, 08:01 PM

I think the CTDs went away once I back tracked AND rebooted Windows. It even lets me play with the controller without any issues. But I'll keep this experience in mind in case I run into the keyboard issue again when starting a new character.

I did some browsing through my old Oblivion mod list from 2012 (probably the last time I played Oblivion) and wow, a lot of memories there! I had forgotten about COBL and TIE, not sure if I want to use them again this play through.

And it's wonderful getting the DLC's back. I had them when I first started playing Oblivion on XBox, but when I moved to PC I lost them. So Tallei will definitely check out the wizard's tower east of Bruma. We will definitely check out Battlehorn Castle while we are in Chorrol, but I doubt Tallei will keep it as a residence. I recall being less than impressed by the place, though I'm reading that it's been improved a bit. Who knows? But it would be nice to have a heavy metal follower to take care of the hard hits while Tallei stays back and spams healing spells. It's something to consider once she gets her Resto level up for the convalescence spells.

I found a new mod that looks really interesting: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/52797. Those of you who remember my obsession with horses in these games from my fan fiction would chuckle - I know I laughed when I read the description and said to myself - Julian really needed this mod back then! I really love this part: "Interaction
Same key used for Whistle can be used for horse interaction.
Pressing this key while mounted will have your character pat the horse."

Also I found this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/46021 which really appeals to me since I always felt guilty leaving my horses at the stables without paying for their board and keep. So here ya go.

And just as important, I found Subrosa's ForestFriend Amulet mod. I loved it back then, and used a similar mod in all of my Skyrim playthroughs. I have to make sure Tallei finds that amulet, she'll like it very much!

I have no houses added - I want to explore Tamriel first with the mods I currently have. I've already found a few locations added by the RST mod, so I have to start that quest to see what happens with those.

I'm off to add those two mods, and the camping one I found, to my load out. I'm also checking into anything that improves that Fingers of the Mountain spell, just to make it worthwhile doing that annoying recommendation. cool.gif

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 9 2023, 10:40 AM

Oh yes, controllers can confuse Windows, I noticed that too. Glad it is all smoothed out! biggrin.gif

Why is your character still level 1? Are you trying to see whether the whole game can be played that way? wink.gif Someone tried it - yes, you can play the whole game on level 1, except for a few Daedric quests where you're required to be of a higher level.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 10 2023, 04:20 AM

I’m not doing much exploring/adventuring, which is what makes you level up faster.

Tallei just got into the AU and once she gets her new Staff back from Delmar she may start exploring (and leveling up!). Right now she just hit level 3.

No weapons, no armor, just bound dagger and spells. It’s a bit tougher, but I’m enjoying it so far. I don’t know if I can continue playing without wreaps and armor, we’ll see!

Posted by: macole Dec 10 2023, 06:57 AM

Sorry to be late on this. I've been very tired as of late and not keeping up on things. I know you've already started and I surely wouldn’t expect you to restart for seemingly trivial enhancements, but I wanted to give you my thoughts.

I use OCOv2.3 in my current adventure. Over all I find it gives acceptable faces, but with the number of quest mods I use it takes 9 patches to do so Still not all issues have been resolved. The custom races in the companion mods I use have grey face bug, most noticeable in certain lighting condition. But worst of all is brown pointy nosed Orcs. I want Pig faces! Those two things annoy me maybe not you. Would I use OCOv2 again or go back to TNR, I haven’t decided.

My current game (you may have seen some of the screenshots) is setup with OR. OR does render gorgeous scenes. Its visual enhancements are its best feature, but nearly everything else I‘ve turned off. If I was to reinstall OB I probably would not use OR again, there are other ways to get the look.

Yes, Roberts Male V5.2 Blues body with the #5 underwear is my go to male body replacer. For the females, I’ve been using some version of HGEC for a long time. Currently it's EVE, which is fantasy enough for me. I did once have a female body mod with as many body options as Roberts Male V5.2. From boyish to busty, it allowed you to assign a different body type for each race. I misplaced that one somewhere, what a shame.

Kvatch Rebuilt is interesting. Had some issues with Unique Landscapes in places. If you like rebuilding Kvatch you should give Sutch Village a look. Renee recommended it to me and I will recommend it to you.

I use Basic Primary Needs and back it up with Basic Personal Hygiene (keep your 'toon clean, or face a myriad of disadvantages like reduced Disposition due to some NPCS due to BO. tongue.gif Wish they made something like this for Skyrim). Both of these are configurable with .ini files, of course. BPN is not 'current' as far as I know, but I been using it for years with no issues. Pretty sure both are made by Maskar, a name we can trust. wink.gif

I have a Camping mod too, but I forget its name. Dozens of those, I'd imagine.

Being a haute ecole rider, you'd want all those horse mods. smile.gif Don't forget Simple Saddlebags, assuming the other mods you've got don't add visible pouches. Acadian also knew of a mod which added reigns, although I never got it to work right.

It's been so long, I've completely forgotten how to use it.

But does one still need to use Wrye Bash and make Bashed Patches for GOG Oblivion?

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 13 2023, 11:29 PM

GOG Oblivion is no different from the other variants in this respect. I use Wrye Bash to set the load order. People also use it to install mods and/or make bashed patches. I think the usage is pretty much the same as it has always been, but I would suggest you install one of the more modern versions, just to be on the safe side. However, I have no evidence that an old version would be detrimental either! biggrin.gif

Posted by: macole Dec 13 2023, 11:52 PM

Wrye Bash is still a good tool. Newer versions of WB will do FOMODs. There are a few mods that don't like it. I've never had success with the mashed potatoes though, they tend to come gummy.

One does not really "need" WB in my opinion unless there is an actual need for it. The Bashed Patch does resolve conflicts. Let's say two mods make changes to Leveled Lists, for instance. You put MMM and some other mod together, and now your game is CTDing more often. mad.gif The patch should tell you if it's the lists which are the problem, and yeah, this includes the GoG install.

On the other hand, the Bashed Patch can also CAUSE problems to occur. I've seen results of this, firsthand. An example: I've got MMM's No Undead Rise in my game, which makes sure zombies and some other undead won't constantly keep coming back to un-life while we're in their midst. 🧟 Wrye recommended bashing this into the patch, so like a good gamer, I did. LO, this caused (wouldn't ya know it) zombies and other undead to keep coming back to unlife! ohmy.gif

So I took that out of the patch. Problem solved. smile.gif
