The name of the thread is "Unpopular Opinions." Mirocu's opinion obviously wasn't agreed with by anyone, but he came on here to state it knowing that would be the case. So what are we going to do, jump all over him for saying it? Everyone has the right to their own opinions; whether their opinions are legit to them or just sound like they are trying to flame = not really our concern to try and change his mind or encourage more discussion on such a topic that can only end in rage all the way around. So Mirocu's statement is going untouched.

Impy, I'm going to quote part of my comments to you on this very thread from a similar situation a couple years ago. . .

Let me also add that I don't understand becoming intolerant when presented with exactly what this thread solicits: unpopular opinions. And Impy, you are the one that created this thread! tongue.gif
...

Flaming your fellow forum members for unpopular opinions in an unpopular opinion thread is not only silly, it's against our rules here - for good reason. Don't do that again, mkay?

The origins of this argument precede my time here. Funny thing is, reading only the quoted bit I completely misinterpreted its subject matter. I assumed it referred to the letter "H," which is sometimes not pronounced when placed at the beginning of a word, or elsewhere, by American English language speakers, yet clearly pronounced by "British" English language speakers. Honor (honour). Herb, Schedule. That sort of thing. A tongue-in-cheek stance could be make that if an "H" is not pronounce then it simply doesn't exist.

Relative to my misinterpretation, all my long life I adhered to the American h-less pronunciation of the word "herb". Up until I got hooked on the village building game "Banished" in 2014, that is. As is my wont, I watched quite a few YouTube LPs of Banished leading up to its purchase and for a while thereafter. A goodly number of those LPs came for British speaking narrators. The short of it is that I now pronounce herb and herbalist with an "H" as often as not. Maybe more so. tongue.gif

But in my copies of the Horatio Hornblower movies (the AMC ones starring Ioun Gruffad), he is 'Mista' 'Aitch" laugh.gif Well, the Duchess called him that at least. But it turns out she was actually an actress, so not really upper class.

What gets me are people who insert an R into words like Wash or Washington. They say Warshington. I want to yell at them that there is no R in there!

Sheesh... I see I went and got things all bass ackwards. Very like me and my too prevalent brain farts. Then again, if not for farts my brain would see too little usage these days. Blood 'ell.

I'm not posting my opinions to flame. For years I have questioned "old hard truths" and asked myself if they really hold validity and I have to say I can no longer simply go along with the narrative. It's important to not just swallow whatever you're being told but instead look at things from another perspective and think for yourself.
The winner write the history and that written history can contain both exaggerated lies and hidden truths.

If what I say is false then no harm done, right? And if I'm right, well, shouldn't that truth come to the surface?

To form an opposite opinion though; you need a reason why you think it isn't true; and proof on your side that shows how it could have been falsified facts. You have presented nothing but a "Why not question history" reasoning; which kind of negates the "Thinker" you are trying to represent yourself as. I love you, Mirocu; but you can't go far just taking opposing views without any sense or reasoning. Find a reason WHY you doubt it and back it up with facts.

Example: Scientists that believe in Evolution have been trying to disprove the Bible by testing fossils with Carbon14 and finding them to be from creatures that lived before the "Creation theory" timing would validate it. To disprove the Evolution Scientists; Scientists that believe in Creation disproved their theory by using Carbon14 on a living Mollusk (fish) = the Carbon14 data came back saying that living fish had died 6 million years prior.

See, they backed up their theory with at least proving that the opposing theory had no proof for their side.

You have given no reasons for your thinking whatsoever; meaning you were just sticking it out there for no other reason than to be stating an unpopular opinion = not something you really believe through a preponderance of study. So technically; you were flaming. But since that is what this whole thread was set up to do; have at it.

Seriously = don't even really know why this thread exists on a site about Elder Scrolls/Bethesda games; but this is exactly why Bethesda's Official site doesn't allow threads like this. Controversial and political debates belong on sites set up for that type of discussion; and that doesn't apply to this site. I vote for this thread to be closed, that is my unpopular opinion.

I have my reasons. What I don't have is the skill to speak them in a good way so that people can see where I'm coming from and thus I don't think there's any point in making the effort. It would be like talking to my brother; whatever I present will just be shrugged off and ignored simply because very few can see things from where I see them.

On the topic of this thread, I am not the author of it but I see no point in it staying open. Real unpopular opinions cannot be vented here without risk of people starting heated arguments and name-calling. I'm also, for the reasons stated above, reluctant to hold arguments with people anyway.

My five bottle caps.

I think you misquoted this part. The freshly-dead molluscs rated 1,600 years old, which was given as a reason to discount C14 dating, but the primary source of carbon for sea creatures is dissolved limestone, not the atmosphere. 6 million years would be about right for the age of the rocks.

So the correct take-away is that C14 dating doesn't work for situations where the atmospheric CO2 isn't the carbon source. The interesting side-note is that the shells date as older than the mollusc they contain, as more of the creature's own carbon comes from its food, some of which originates at the surface.

Crows are atmospheric creatures, not aquatic, so they should not have these issues. Even if they secrete shells (and I don't mean spent ammunition)..

After reviewing this thread, I agree that closing it is wise.

The reason it has not generated more problems is largely due to the maturity and care with which our wonderful members choose their words. That said, the likelihood for disagreements and/or misunderstandings that cause tension and hurt feelings is significant – while the potential upside or benefit from this thread is quite limited.
