Chorrol.com _ General Discussion _ The retrogame thread

This is a thread dedicated to the gaming system that took over the torch and basically saved the whole gaming industry after the video game crash of 1983, I believe it was. Details aside though, it became a tremendous success for Nintendo and gained gaming fans all over the world. It´s a system that still has a lot of popularity long after it was taken off the shelves and it is equally iconic and infamous at the same time.

But this thread isn´t mainly about that. It´s about the games and the accessories and the memories. As many of you know, I collect games for my own console I got as a kid. It still works and since I made the decision to take it apart to clean it and cut the 10NES lockout chip (preventing games not approved by Nintendo to be played), it works even better now than when it was new since the lockout chip can also screw with legal games.

I plan to write about games I´ve gotten and ones I´m getting and about the games in general, but as I realize this is a topic not shared by too many here, I invite you to write about any other old gaming system you may have played or simply know something about that you want to share. The only requirement I ask you to follow is that it´s about a cartridge-based system.

Happy gaming! smile.gif

I just got spare parts for one of my controllers. As much as Id like to keep it all original, it might be a good idea to get new guts inside for better response. The other controller is fine, though.

I also got a Super Mario Bros 3 watch, just like the one I had as a kid! However I know I threw that away when I got bored of it. *kicks self through space-time continuum*

As Im still trapped in that age, its not really nostalgia lane for me. Its present time! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Today I got a complete copy of Kid Icarus. It was all in good condition except for the cover of the manual, but it wasnt too bad so I can live with it. Didnt even need too much of a cleaning smile.gif

I still have my parents' 101 model of the NES tucked away somewhere. I just dn't have the cord that you plug into the TV. Our old games are still around too. My favorite was Super Pitfall though I never beat it. I could never figure out how to rescue the girl :/

Posted by: mirocu Nov 24 2014, 08:08 PM

Never played Super Pitfall but I have seen the Nerds review. It didnt make me wanna play it, tbh.. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

But maybe I will get it off ebay later anyway, just to have it as a gimmick. Ill put it next to my copy of Mr Gimmick so I can giggle every time I see them together. No one will know the gag but me! laugh.gif

Is http://i.imgur.com/mXObd8M.jpg one of the console systems you have mirocu? wink.gif

Posted by: Renee Gade IV Dec 3 2014, 11:18 PM

mirocu have you (or anybody else) played http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faxanadu? It is a side-scrolling action RPG in which the player character climbs a giant World Tree. Goes on and on. All kinds of adventures in that game. I remember playing when I was in college, which would have been early '90s.

One of the things I liked about Faxanadu was you could go all the way back to the beginning, if I remember correct. It had that small bit of freedom so far as exploration goes.

Posted by: mirocu Dec 4 2014, 08:31 PM

@SubRosa - Not quite what I usually play on... biggrin.gif

@Renee - Nope, never played that game. Never payed any attention to it due to its strange name tongue.gif

Other games you can walk all the way to the beginning are Shadowgate and Street Gangs, or as its also know River City Ransom smile.gif

Posted by: mirocu Dec 27 2014, 09:45 AM

Lately when Ive come home from work I always popped in Bubble Bobble and just went nuts with the turbo controller I have. Havent played as much now though, but I blame the Christmas tree I have standing right in front of the TV cause I dont have room for it anywhere else... biggrin.gif

Somehow feel like in the mood for Shadowgate but I reckon I have to wait.

That's a shame, sort of. I wouldn't want to play it now, but back in the late '80s Faxanadu was one of those rare games which bridged the gap between table-games and video, in the sense that it had some of the elements found in table-games. It also had a story as you went along. A mostly linear story with (I think) a few choices here and there.

Bubble Bobble? rollinglaugh.gif There's a name I haven't heard in .. sheesh..... a very long time.

I think I may have liked it for all that, but I dont think the graphic style of the game would have appealed to me. Too much brown and grey. And at this time I was all into Super Mario 3 and other games with a more "just rush through" attitude. I can be very impatient sometimes.. laugh.gif

As I was playing Darkwing Duck last night something hit me. I have that game and Ducktales 2 on both the NES and the Gameboy, and I much prefer the Gameboy versions. You would think Id like the NES ones because theyre in colour and all, but no. I actually find the colour in both games to be meh and that really surprised me. I thought theyd be much more nice and colourful. Plus a few aspects are not quite the same but I blame that on my familiarity with the Gameboy versions.

Tough luck, really. Both the NES versions were quite pricey... biggrin.gif

Antiques? huh.gif Its only surpassed by the Super Nintendo, right...? Oh, yeah! There is that new Nintendo64! How could I forget that..? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Moving on smile.gif I will now compare the original Gameboy with the Pocket Light version because those are the ones I own. Ill throw in the Pocket too just because thats what the Light is built on.

IPB Image

This is the original Game Boy that came out around 1989-90 and was a huge success to say the least. It relied on even then old technology which was why it didnt have any colours beyond green/yellow nor any backlight. This of course made it a little tricky to see what was happening on the screen if the lighting wasnt optimal where you played. They did that purposely because that meant no new R&D was required and they could instantly make games with very good quality which of course was a huge reason it got so popular despite the screen issues. Also, playing on the go was very new at this time so those issues were easily overlooked by gamers who for the first time basically could take their NES on trips!

It used four AA batteries and also had an AC output. http://www.konsolenkost.de/images/produkte/i90/9029941-9029941-3.jpg

IPB Image
The Game Boy Pocket was released about seven years after the original. Yes, they were still making new hardware for the same games seven years later! Talk about success, eh? wink.gif
This version was not only smaller in size but also had another screen. It was slightly larger and much clearer and unlike the original it was in real black/white. Still had no backlight.

It used two AAA batteries.

IPB Image
The Light version came out in 1998 but only in Japan. You could play with or without the backlight and it took two AA instead of two AAA because of the increased power demand. 1998 was also the year Game Boy Colour came out but Ive never played on one so I cant give an opinion about it.

Conclusion: I still prefer the original Game Boy. The Light is very nifty but after all these years Im so indoctrinated with the screen of the original and its just not the same playing on the Pockets black/white screen. The light makes it greenish but its still not the same and since nostalgia has me firmly in its bosom I cant love it as much as my childhood version. Plus the Pockets are a bit too small for my hands. The original Game Boy is much more bulky and that suits me perfectly. Even as a kid I liked holding it because it felt so sturdy.

I hoped you liked reading about these early hand-held devices and I hoped you read carefully! Therell be a quiz later.... biggrin.gif

Thanks, mirocu, but where are the buttons to push to make phone calls on those things?

Posted by: ghastley Feb 6 2015, 03:54 PM

So the Game Boy Pocket Light is actually heavier than the Game Boy Pocket? blink.gif

http://img.tradera.net/images/174/201999174_f8b2bdf3-cffe-4847-bb46-103aa5893f97.jpg! Not much to bring out the heavy guns for to salute with or anything, but its complete with the manual and plastic inner shell and Im sure the game can if not kill then at least stun a few minutes laugh.gif

Another package of games soon arrives at Casa del Rocu! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I bought them all from the same guy which is convenient. I got all I bid on except one but I can get that some other time. Luckily these games werent that expensive. How expensive, you ask? Well, lets just say I have bought single games for much more than these cost... laugh.gif tongue.gif

The games I got were:

Balloon Fight
Paperboy
Super Off-Road
Pro Wrestling
Popeye

The last two are in the first series that Nintendo released, commonly referred to as the Black Series.

As early spring is upon us I have a small desire to play Battle of Olympus and Pinball on the NES. As you know I have a strange habit of doing the same stuff around the same time of year every year gamewise and as a kid I played those games around Easter one year. That was enough to leave an imprint on me so I reckon those games are soon gonna go warm in the toaster! laugh.gif

Posted by: mirocu Mar 18 2015, 09:28 AM

Played some Battle of Olympus and Pinball early this morning. These games bring back sooo many memories, especially this time of the year! happy.gif

Also I just bought a Nintendo magazine on ebay. I think this issue is one of those I had as a kid. Well see if I recognize it smile.gif

Posted by: mirocu Aug 4 2015, 11:42 AM

Im thinking about getting a second NES system, for two reasons.

One, it can serve as a backup on a just-in-case basis. Second, as Ive mention I have disabled the 10NES chip on my own system and I kinda want one that has it intact. That way I can more easily tell if a game is sold as PAL but is in fact NTSC as it wont boot up. You can tell by different music speed and so on, but still.

If I get one Ill post an update, I know how much you guys care about this... biggrin.gif

Posted by: mirocu Aug 19 2015, 09:32 AM

Second system on its way! biggrin.gif

I decided to go for full box instead of just a system. I went for the Action Set that includes a Zapper (even though I already have one of each colour), two controllers, the Super Mario/Duck Hunt cart, a manual and the styrofoam. I think it misses the Zapper manual but I can hunt one down later smile.gif

Super Mario Bros!!!! In all these years, I've never even tried Duck Hunt, lol. But have played Mario Cart, just didn't enjoy it as much as Mario and Luigi.

So, yesterday I picked up my very early Christmas gift from me to me biggrin.gif

It all looks very nice but are in need of some cleaning. For now I cleaned the contacts within the system and I also cleaned the game cart just to test it out. So much fun to play Super Mario again, havent done it in months! happy.gif

Anyway, it all worked first try so thats all good. I dont know if the system has had the 10NES chip removed but I can test with an American cart later. I dont care, really, but I want to find out. Also when I move back home from the cottage in October I will pick apart the controllers and clean them out completely just like I did with my childhood ones.

SO MUCH FUN!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

What is that about the chip being removed? What does that do?

Nintendo put that there to prevent pirate carts to be played. Early DRM, sort of. But it also has the downside of prohibiting legit carts to be played if the specific 10NES contacts are dirty and I guess the chip itself could malfunction after all this time. So it really serves no purpose whatsoever anymore and has nothing to do with the game system gameplay-wise which is why I removed it from my own console even though I want to keep it as original as possible.

I may be interested in learning what to remove/where and how, because I have to clean the cartridges all the time for them to play. I have been thinking about pulling my NES out and playing, but I have to pass my PC to get to the NES, and ESO calls me as I'm passing the PC, lol.

Posted by: mirocu Aug 30 2015, 03:05 PM

Removing that chip wont relieve you of cleaning the carts, it will still be a must. However it will still increase the chances of a cart to work and you will also be able to play any cart from any region in the world, including pirate carts.

Well, I just want to play all my Mario Bros games, lol. But every time I pull the old NES out and try to play it, it takes hours of cleaning the cartridge and blowing in every crevice of the console to get it to play, lol.

And I still love the Mario music, it gives such a nostalgic feeling to hear it! 9 Inch Nails did a mix with it on "Closer" that made me pull the game out and play when it came out:

Played some tonight.

Started out with the all-time classic Super Mario Brothers, I got up to level 5-1 before I messed up too much to be bothered to continue. So in went Probotector, otherwise known as Contra, and with the help of the 30 lives code I beat it. I guess I could beat it without the code if I actually tried hard enough, but meh. I just wanna see the game and beat it. It btw really does have solid gameplay smile.gif

I dont know many less known gems so I dont think I can help you much. Though I know Renee would recommend Faxanadu, an early RPG kind of game where I think you level up and such things. Personally I can recommend River City Ransom otherwise known as Street Gangs, if you want to kick and punch thugs while being one yourself tongue.gif It actually has an element of RPG too where depending on what food you eat you can level up different skills. You can also learn new moves from books.

Look em up on youtube if you want to see how they are smile.gif

I have a free weekend (finally) - so finally had time to sit down and watch this. I love his histories of the different games! He didn't go as in depth in this one as he did on the NES, but maybe there wasn't as much to say, lol.

I got my son two gameboys (so his friends could play with him if they didn't have one) and every single attachment and extra available for them. He had a Gameboy pack (like a briefcase) that held all the gear in it for when he visited friend's houses, lol.

He got the Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance; the Gameboy GameCube Adapter so he could play his gameboy games on the Television; etc.

I think for the longest time that was his favorite of all time; but when I got him the XBox 360 it eventually got where he didn't want to play it anymore, so he sold everything to the GameStop in order to buy 360 games.

Posted by: mirocu Nov 28 2015, 09:15 PM

So nice of you to get him all that! Sad to learn he sold it all eventually, though. If he hasnt regretted it yet I suspect there might come a time when he will... kvleft.gif

Never had any accessories for the Gameboy myself. I had the box it came in plus the games and that was it, but I was happy. Still remember when I got Kirbys Pinball Land on a Christmas morning (we always got one gift early), I played the heck out of it! happy.gif

Still remember when I got Kirbys Pinball Land on a Christmas morning (we always got one gift early), I played the heck out of it! happy.gif

I was afraid he would regret it too; but he sold them all in 2006 or so; and this is almost 2016 - so far he hasn't moaned about it, lol. I guess if he ever does, you can always still find them for sale at the GameStop, though maybe not in the same great condition his were in when he sold them.

I regretted selling my NES and Sega Genesis systems, and moaned about it a LOT. One of my son's friends gave me his old broken NES system and Mario games for XMas right before Oblivion came out. You had to fix the NES before playing every time you played it, but then it would work. I played it to death until my son got me playing Oblivion, lol.

I still miss the Sega every now and then, but I did get some of the games on my PC to play (Echo the Dolphin; Kid Chameleon; etc). It just isn't the same, somehow.

Sounds strange. What did you have to do in order to make it work before every session?

Tonight I played some Pro Wrestling (as Star Man) and then Wild Gunman that utilizes the Zapper smile.gif

When I got beyond lvl 99 on Gunman it just started over at lvl 1 again, and the score isnt properly displayed as it cant show 1.000.000 and over. But I did get over 2 million points. Average time on bandit one was 0.25 seconds and on bandit two 0.37 seconds. Lost two lives though because I was goofing around with different shooting styles tongue.gif

I love my NES happy.gif

Last night I finally beat Kung Fu! biggrin.gif

Not a hard game really and its very short, but you take a lot of damage when hit, especially when fighting the bosses but I beat the end guy surprisingly easy. No deaths along the way either so it was a pretty nice run smile.gif

I also played the black box wrestling game where I won and defended the title. No real end to it, you just keep defending the title. And I also beat Probotector (Contra) again. Love the music on stage 5 and 6 smile.gif

Posted by: Kiln Jan 27 2016, 02:44 PM

One of my favorite NES games was Heavy Barrel. My brother and I played it for a looong time together. Decent early shooting game IMO.

Snake Rattle 'n' Roll was another good multiplayer NES game I love.

I wish more companies would rerelease their old games on the newer consoles like the Rare Replay collection. It'd be nice to play Morrowind with a graphic update and optimized for the Xbox One.

Just played through DuckTales 2. Never had this game to the NES as a kid but I did play it extensively on the Gameboy. So much so I got the two possible endings several times each.
On the NES Ive beaten it twice now but I havent found all the pieces of the map. Last time I found all but one and this time I found three pieces.

A nice game with good gameplay, great replay value and awesome music. Even the very last music at the endscreen is kickass! smile.gif

Today I got the correct version of Dr Mario in the box. It didnt come with the manual and sleeve but I already got that so I put it all together and finally I have a complete Dr Mario again! biggrin.gif

Had it as a child but since I was a bit stupid in the face I got rid of it. As I did with more games. Bah.

I also have the Murican version and as I have the 10NES chip disabled it works on my machine but at a much slower rate (audio-wise). So much fun to play it again with the music at the correct pace smile.gif

Ah the old nes my favorite games on it where:
1: The Legend of Zelda
2: Mario Bros. 2 and 3.
3: Willow.
4: The Goonies 2.

I'd put Zelda 2 on here although I like the game, it's the one Zelda game I haven't beaten even to today.

Posted by: mirocu May 23 2017, 03:53 PM

Nice list, Reaper. Out of those I've never tired Willow, how good is it?

Posted by: Dark Reaper May 23 2017, 08:38 PM

Willow's an odd game that loosely follows the movie. It plays like Legend of Zelda and in this game Willow is more of a swordsman then a sorcerer in training. It does have a note from the film but plays at the very last few seconds of the end credits.

Watching a video walkthrough of the nes Konami game Mission: Impossible. Amazing how they got the stealth in this game just about right while it was severely lacking in the nes version of Metal/Digi' Gear.

Back in 2013 I bought a copy of the rare NES game Mr Gimmick. The game was only released in Japan and Scandinavia and also very late in the 8-bit era and for these reasons not many copies are out there. Well, at least not compared to say Mega Man or other games.
Anyway, I bought Mr Gimmick for 2500 SEK and when I just now looked at the auction site there were a few more up for sale, for 5000 SEK each!!! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

That's not to say they are easy to sell or even that they will be sold for that price, but to see my purchase double in value like that really got me hot and bothered bigsmile.gif

Edit: I just looked at another game, Action 52. Same story there! Bought it for 2500 SEK and the two ones up for sale now; 4500 and 3900 SEK, respectively!

NEW NES GAME PURCHASE

Of course, "new" is to be taken with a grain of salt. It's new to my collection anyway and the game in question is Metroid. Never played it much back in the day and I don't reckon I will now. It's not really appealing to me but it's still an iconic game and hey ho, maybe it will grow on me a bit*?

Came complete with the small box and the manual that refers to Samus as "he" but as the perceptive child I was back then I instantly suspected it was a girl in that suit because of how the character was running; reminded me of an eleven-year-old girl bigsmile.gif

This morning I decided to boot up my old NES again and play some Mega Man and Battle of Olympus, two games I played as a kid but never owned. I just played two stages of Mega Man and a bit of the other one.

Although I never got far in either games I do enjoy the music in them and especially Battle of Olympus. I'll list a few here and frankly, they are so much more memorable than basically any modern, overproduced song by whoever world famous singer or group. These simple 8-bit tunes kick them around the playground fifteen times I tells ya.

I like Top Gun on the NES. Just pay attention to ALT and Speed indicators on the hud during the landing sequence and you should almost always be able to land on the carrier.

I just bought a mug that has the original Game Boy design and with a screen that "turns on" to a game when hot beverage is poured in! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm also on the fence if I should continue bidding on a complete Link's Awakening. Good quality and I only have the loose game at present. But over 100 bucks... Do I really want it that bad?

Decided to try my NES this morning. Problem though my remote to the TV didn't work, something I have noticed before. I need to press a button to change channel to AV1 in order to play, but there was no response.

Seeing no alternative, I opened up the remote to take a look at the circuit board. I thought it could be the same issue NES cartridges suffer from; dirty connections. So I took a qtip and some cleaning fluid and went to town. Qtip basically turned black. Went through five of them before the circuit board looked good and the blackness on the qtips had faded enough. Put it all together and BAM; now it worked perfectly fine! biggrin.gif

Played some Mega Man (first game) and as it all now works fine I'm gonna play some Battle of Olympus and Pinball as well. I choose these games because how they remind me of springtime from my childhood happy.gif

Link’s Awakening was the hero of many a long car trip when Khajiit was but a cub. This one couldn’t justify $100 for it, no matter the warm feelings this one harbors for the game though.

Samesis. I didn't continue bidding and I think it ended up at over 200 bucks. I do have the loose game from decades before so I can still play if I want.

Only ever played my Game Boy at home though, although occasionally on trips. Since ambient lighting is most important I wanted to sit in a specific location to get the best view of the screen.

Fun fact: I completed all my Game Boy games way back when. Something I never did with my NES games even though I got that much earlier. I just liked the Game Boy better in a way.

Played some Mega Man on the NES this morning and for the first time I actually beat the Fire Man stage! At least I don't think I've ever done that before. I usually just beat Cut Man and Bomb Man.

Also played some Kid Icarus but as I'm even worse on that game I didn't get far. Back in the day I had a code to skip to the last stage which I used a lot, so I have beaten the game but not legit by any means tongue.gif

Yes, I always have an urge to play some NES in springtime. As this was merely a test I only played some Mega Man; Cut Man and Fire Man stages to be exact. Prior to playing I quick-cleaned the 72-pin connector using the special "cartridge" and I also did the actual Mega Man cartridge. And thanks to that; worked perfectly on the first try!

Posted by: mirocu Mar 27 2021, 09:56 AM

Played a bit of Shadowgate yesterday as well as Mario Bros and Dr Mario. Sad thing; my system cleaner which is like a cartridge broke and now I have to get another one. It's essential in order to make it work, cleaning the games isn't enough.

Shadowgate is fun though, one of the very best games on the NES if you ask me. And would you believe it; all three save slots still work! I have two right at the very end and one from roughly 60-65% through the game. Loaded up that one and played it to the end. Fantastic soundtrack.

Posted by: mirocu Apr 30 2022, 07:58 AM

As always this time of year I've been playing my NES for a few weeks in the morning. It has become increasingly harder though because my bootleg Ninja Cleaner broke down last year and the official NES cleaner simply isn't as good. More difficult to clean the system as a result but I have been successful playing some games anyway by taking out and inserting the game again and again.

This morning I decided to fire up Contra, or Probotector as it's known over here. Only meant to play a few levels but I ended up playing through the whole game laugh.gif It's not that long anyway.

So yeah, I can now officially say I have beaten Contra before breakfast using the 30 life code -What? mellow.gif

NES story time!

I've been having issues with my beloved childhood NES ever since my off-brand cleaning device broke as that was the thing that was essential for the system to work. I haven't found a replacement and I suspect I'm not the only one who's discovered that it's way better than Nintendo's official product.
I tried getting it to work this morning but to no avail, so I fired up the second NES I have that I got as a backup (yup; you know me!). That one worked first try so I played Contra through.

Just now I decided to take my own NES apart again to see if I could clean the internal contacts. This is a risky thing as the screw heads might be damaged and thus impossible to remove and also the plastic they latch on to might give, so I always have to be careful.

I didn't find the contacts too dirty but I got a little bit off and after some fiddling I got the shield underneath back and the connector. Everything but the top shield and the lid itself. I also didn't screw all the screws back, only two in order to provide at least some sturdiness. Plugged it back in and popped in Contra.

It worked! First try! I'm always scared damaging something when I take it apart like this but it all worked fine. I also tried two other games and I did have to fiddle with them a bit before they worked but at least that's much easier now when the lid and top shield are easy to remove. I think I'm gonna leave them loose from now on actually. I would much like it to be all back as it should but if it at least work I can live with it. No idea screwing it all back as having it off makes it easier to clean the contacts with another part of the cleaning kit I have.

You can take apart a Nintendo? ohmy.gif But you can do this because you have a spare. Gooeness. How many consoles do you have?

Me: Atari 2600 (it's in a box. Probably still works, just need an old CRT TV to find out)
... Nintendo, although I forget if it's NES or SNES
... Playstation 2
.... two Playstation 3s (one is kaput)
... Xbox 360

I skipped the Xbox 1 / PS4 generation. Maybe I'll get one of those too someday.

Sure. The NES is just screwed together with Philips screws.

Yeah, but also because I've done it before so I'm somewhat confident in doing it. And since it wouldn't work anyway I took the risk.

Two NES, one Mega Drive (Genesis), one xbox 360, one original Game Boy, two clear Game Boy and one Game Boy Light smile.gif

whoa whoa whoa you have an Xbox? 360??? blink.gif huh.gif What do you play on that? Any Bethesda games? Don't tell me you've still got that all contained in its original box!

No kidding, you have a Sega as well.

I got the Xbox three years ago. My boss's kid was about to just throw it away and even though I told him to sell it and get whatever he could for it, he'd just go nah. So instead of letting him throw it away, I took it off his hands. I've never played it and it didn't come with a Beth game or anything interesting. And even if it did, I prefer the PC.

When it comes to consoles I just prefer the NES and Contra/Probotector is something I can always pop in and have a go at! biggrin.gif

I see. Well if you ever get interested and want to know anything about your free Xbox, I can help.

So Khajiit and Mrs. Khajiit started watching the Star Wars movies in order starting on May 4th because apparently we are suckers for fake holidays. Anyway, as we were watching the pod-racing sequence in The Phantom Menace, Khajiit got a strong desire to play the N64 classic Star Wars: Episode 1- Podracer. As soon as we get the interwebz out where we live now, Khajiit might get it from GOG.

I think I still have that one on disc, from way back in the day.

I've got a 360 too. Well, we technically have two of them but the older one is currently off-line (CDROM not working). We have to share the remaining one. wacko.gif Plenty of games on it still. We saw no reason to upgrade to One (other than to lighten our wallets which we declined).

I only remember the podracing game. The Naboo starfighter was an unlockable fighter in the excellent Rogue Squadron, but that game was set during the Galactic Civil War era. I don’t remember any other prequel games on N64.

As it's once again Easter I decided to try and fire up my old NES, this being a tradition around this time of year. It's a finicky system to say the least, even back in its heyday, so I didn't have much hope. That was lost a couple years back when my cleaner thing broke which was essential for making it work. I did try anyway and this is what happened.

I first tried Battle of Olympus, a game I never played a whole lot and was never any good at. No dice. All I got was a grey screen and nothing else. So I tried with the first Mega Man. Still nothing. Probotector (Contra)? No. Bubble Bobble? Pffh.

At this point I was about to give up. Without that cleaner I'm basically screwed and I can't seem to find another. Then the idea of blowing into the cartridge hit me. It's what we all used to do back in the day but what's nowadays frowned upon as you don't really want the moist from your breath to get into the system and potentially make it start rusting. Maybe not that big of a risk, but since there are better ways to make it work no one is doing it these days. But I thought hey, it doesn't seem to want to work anyway so why not go for a Hail Mary? So I got the Probotector (Contra) cartridge, blew into its contacts, inserted it into the system and pressed On. It worked! It totally worked, first try! It didn't even give up after a few seconds so I had to redo it! I ended up using the Konami code and played through the whole game. So once again I can say I beat Contra before breakfast biggrin.gif

After all this it was time to stop and go get breakfast. Being who I am though I just had to try Battle of Olympus again, just to see if the magic worked again which I honestly didn't expect. But it did! I blew into the contacts like ye olde days and yes; the game started on the first try!

What can we all make of this then? Two things I reckon; never give up and perhaps us kids weren't that daft after all.... wink.gif

I wonder if air duster would work in place of blowing on it with your breath?

Khajiit started his first serious playthrough of Super Metroid on the Switch via the SNES online app. The platforming is a bit annoying at times, and I seem to be stuck in an area I can’t get out of, but otherwise, not a bad time!

laugh.gif I was just going to suggest blowing in the cartridge, lol. My last memories of NES were of the requirement of blowing them out in order to resurrect the Mario Brothers, lol. Really wish Nintendo would make the game backwards compatible on the new consoles (but without updating the games), lol.

Well, you can play them on their latest console, the Switch, but you have to have an internet connection and a monthly subscription that costs around $4. Also there are the NES Minis that you can buy that are basically just a miniature version of the NES (complete with full size controllers) that come preloaded with a bunch of games to play. You simply connect them to a modern tv with an HDMI cord, plug in the ac cord and off you go!

Don’t mention it! Also, I just noticed that the price of the mini consoles is rather high right now ($212.99 on Amazon) so I’m not sure how “worth it” they are. unsure.gif
If you don’t already have a Switch, you can get a brand new Switch Lite for less than you can the mini console ($198.29 on Amazon), but you will only be able to use it in handheld mode. The normal Switch console is selling for $299.95 on Amazon.

Posted by: mirocu Apr 7 2023, 04:53 PM

Whether or not the NES mini is worth it is of course totally based upon the games preloaded and your preference. So make sure you look it up before buying.

It comes with 30 games which isn't bad but frankly I'm quite disappointed with the selection. I guess they had to go with Nintendo titles only or something but it's a shame how many awesome games were excluded. I do like the save feature it has though.

Mind you I haven't actually gotten the mini, this is just me talking about what I've heard about it.

I have an SNES mini that I keep at mom’s house for when I’m over there without my Switch, but did not get a NES mini as I didn’t really get serious with video games until the SNES, even though we did have an NES.

Games included on the NES mini: Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and Mario Bros Dr. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr., Mega Man, PAC-MAN, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Kirby Adventure, Castlevania, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Ninja Gaiden, Punch OUt Featuring Mr. Dream, Balloon Fight, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Bubble Bobble, Tecmo Bowl, Super C , Galaga, StarTropics, Ghosts'n Goblins, and Gradius.

Not complete by any stretch of the imagination, but it has all of the games *most* people would want. A pretty good lineup, all in all.

Posted by: mirocu Apr 7 2023, 06:55 PM

Yeah I guess it's not that bad. Some really good classics in there. Though I honestly have no idea what the heck Techmo Bowl is doing there instead of like the original Contra tongue.gif

I think the game called “Super C” is a Contra game. Techmo Bowl is an American football game that was pretty popular here in the States, naturally.

Yeah, Super C was the followup to Contra. Haven't played it myself but it looks just as great if not greater. I just think the original is such a classic smile.gif

Yeah, it does surprise me that the original wasn’t included. I don’t remember ever playing a Contra game, but it is a well regarded series.

I've been playing Dr. Mario every other day now, it's pretty addictive. Sadly I don't play my original cartridge as I got rid of that when I was young and dumb. Same with a few other games. I also just now played Probotector (Contra) again and as always with the 30 life code. But the thing is, this is the one time I wouldn't have to put the code in as I somehow managed to play quite good and when it was all over I had 33 lives left! blink.gif

I did mess up at a couple of places where I usually don't mess up (typical) but I still managed to beat the game within the 3 lives you get at the start plus any additional from accumulating points. I didn't start to lose lives until stage 6 (out of 8) so up until that point I had Spread! biggrin.gif I also didn't die at any point during the final boss and by then I just had the starting weapon. I've noticed this also with Sunset Riders; when I play Billy who has the six-shooter I always play better than when I have Carmine (?) who has the shotgun with great spread. I'm more focused and careful when I actually need to aim tongue.gif

Played some Dr Mario last night on my NES. I'm out of cleaning stuff so it was a bit tricky getting it to work and I didn't get Probotector (Contra) to work. I'll sort it out asap.

The NES is great, I just wish it wasn't this difficult. And it was like this back in the day just as well simply because of its design. But I like it and I'll give it the care it needs biggrin.gif

Edit: Got another cleaning solution in the meantime and it worked fine as well. Got Probotector to work and beat it and I think it was my best run ever. Yes I do start with the 30 lives code but after the final boss and the game started over I was at 32 tongue.gif

NES

My go-to game ten years ago was Bubble Bobble but now I've been playing Dr. Mario on a regular basis for some time as I just love that type of puzzle. I always start on level 10 and Medium speed and go up to level 19 where I usually fail because the viruses are very high up and I can't click fast enough. But just now I actually managed to do that, and I was lucky, so I passed that level and got to level 20 where I did indeed fail. I can do that level on Slow but not on Medium and how some people can do it on Fast is well beyond my comprehension laugh.gif

Dr. Mario (NES)

Level: 20
Speed: Med

Level cleared

I finally beat level 20 on medium difficulty that net me a scene with the viruses sitting on top of a tree while a Protoceratops flies across the screen in an egg. No, I'm not drunk. I think tongue.gif

Never did play Dr. Mario on Gameboy btw. I wonder how it is considering the Gameboy games only had four shades of green tongue.gif

Posted by: mirocu Yesterday, 08:00 PM

I have now played the NES almost daily and I've gotten it to work first try every single time without even having to clean anything.

I just write this down to remind my future self; insert the game and yank it to the right slightly and that should do it.

Result may vary... biggrin.gif
